Join Mark Christiansen for an in-depth discussion in this video Manage the grain pipeline in a complex shot, part of After Effects Compositing: 2 Matching Foreground to Background.
…And now a little story about grain and how getting it right in a complex…shot like this one can challenge your…whole understand of the After Effects render pipeline.…The rule of thumb is grain always should come…last, but making that happen isn't always so straightforward.…Make sure that you're working at full resolution when you are working on grain.…I will zoom way in here, and just by going back and forth on two frames,i…can clearly see grain happening on the background and not on the cg skateboard.…
I want to apply grain just to the board, and that's in a pre-comp.…So here's the board layer.…This time around I'm going to use the Add Grain effect.…Match Grain doesn't always make the best guess…and you end up having to adjust things anyway.…So here, I'll just adjust the main three criteria.…First of all again, toggling between two frames.…I can see that the grain looks definitely too big.…So I'll reduce the size in half.…Now it looks a little bit intense, so I'll just reduce that a touch.…
And, I might just soften it a little bit.…
