- Mad Max Fury Road was widely perceived…as having been shot mostly with practical effects…and that it was color grading that made the big difference…in look between this one and the other Mad Max movies.…Now, that's not at all true.…In fact, there were thousands of effect shots involving CGI…but there's no question that the grade added…to the dramatic effect of those effects…and of the movie itself.…If director George Miller had his way…there apparently would've been a black and white…release of the movie and that, ironically,…brings me to my main point about being a colorist.…
When you're working on your own project,…I encourage you to be a colorist and pay attention…to how color influences the viewers attention…and the emotion of the shot sequence or entire film.…Here we're looking at an example of the car jump sequence…with and without it's color grade.…I decided to give this piece the hot exterior look…of an old west showdown somewhere in Mexico…but there are other ways you could choose…to take the final grade, even to achieve that emotion.…
