Join EJ Hassenfratz for an in-depth discussion in this video Day 1 challenge: Timing and spacing, part of 5-Day Mograph Challenge: Animation Fundamentals.
- Hello and welcome to day one of this five-day motion graphics challenge. Today, you'll create a GIF demonstrating the animation principle of Timing & Spacing. Timing & Spacing is the most basic animation principle, but it's also one of the most important. Timing refers to the timing between actions or poses, and spacing refers to how an object is spaced throughout each frame of animation or poses. An object with the exact same animation length, can convey different things depending on how the key frames are spaced.
The same can be said about the spacing of key frames through the length of an overall animation. How an object's key frames are timed and spaced, can give it a completely different feel or emotion. Much of what we see as realistic when it comes to movement or even color theory, boils down to what we see and experience in nature. Depending on how an object moves, we can gather information about that object. Is it heavy and solid? Or is it light and bouncy? You can even convey emotion through Timing & Spacing.
Is the object forcefully moving with anger, relaxed and slow, or energetic and happy? What kind of movements and emotions will you choose for your objects? Once you're finished with your animation, please share it by posting your work on social media using the hashtag #5daymograph and on the challenge's Tumblr page at 5daymograph.tumblr.com.
We encourage you to showcase your work online using the hashtag #5dayMograph, to get feedback on your work and stay inspired. You can also submit your projects to our Tumblr page at 5daymograph.tumblr.com.
