Join Lee Lanier for an in-depth discussion in this video Creating an electric blast, part of VFX Techniques: Space Scene 01 Maya Animation and Dynamic Simulation.
…We're ready to move on to a brand new effect.…And, this will be an effect that emulates the missile or…laser, the futuristic weapon that the ship fires at the asteroid.…We can make this in a brand new scene, outside the…main scene, and then integrate it later on through the compositing program.…So, start a new scene, nothing in it.…And then we're going to use the Create…Lightning tool, to create a energy blob that…comes out of the ship.…Before I get to that though, let's go ahead and set…some globals up here, in terms of the duration of the timeline.…
Just 20 frames is fine for this, that's all we need.…Also, Render Settings, we'll pick a name, Rayblast.…Png is good again. Name.number.extension,…20 duration, perspective is fine for rendering, and then we'll do…a half size compared to all the other renders, 720, HD 720.…In terms of the quality, we'll use my…software, but we'll just go for standard highest quality.…Okay, now we're ready to render, let's go ahead and create the effect.…
The lightning effect requires two objects.…
- Animating the spaceship and asteroid
- Animating cameras to follow the action
- Setting key and fill lights
- Creating layers for the sun, stars, and planet
- Setting up shadow and lighting layers
- Creating mental ray render passes
- Exploding geometry in a dynamic simulation
- Attaching nParticle emitter to bodies
- Batch rendering render layers
