Creating bump maps for custom textures

- Bump maps are black and white images you can use to simulate texture on a 3D object. Now notice I used the word simulate. They don't actually create any added geometry, so they're really fast. But they do do a great job of simulating texture on your 3D objects, they just don't slow down your render in the process. Now once you've created a seamless texture, that's just usually the start of the process. If you want to add a little more realism to the material you've applied to your 3D object, you need to add a bump map. Now one of the cool things about Photoshop is the fact that you can actually save bump maps directly out of Photoshop. All a bump map is, is a black and white representation of depth. Whatever is white is gonna kind of bump out. And whatever is dark is gonna kind of bump in. With my background layer selected, I could go up under Filter, and if I go down to 3D, I could choose Generate Bump Map. It's just gonna look at the color values and create a bump map. Now if I…
