Case study: The Zoom channel

- [Narrator] We are all familiar with logos, symbols, and brand identities, but what exactly is an ident? Well, station identification, ident, or channel ID for short, is how radio, television stations, or networks identify themselves on air, typically by means of a call sign or brand name, also known as sounder or stinger. For example, this gong, (gong banging) It's so recognizable you don't need to see the Netflix logo to know that this is that thing. So in short, channel ID is how we're helping viewers to identify the channel they are currently watching. Without channel IDs, station logos would have minor presence or just a small image in the corner of the screen. And so idents are crucial to TV stations. So in this course, I'll take you through a short journey of how to animate a short channel ID, and for that I've picked the Israeli kids channel, ZOOM. This channel is owned by Imagine Media and offers live action comedy, sketches, animated series, as well as some reruns of popular shows. Its motto is funny, rude, and cartoonish, and the slogan that it uses is "Whatever You Want." It's aimed toward young people from eight to 18 years old, and as you can see, it already has a great channel branding that was made by studio staff. Just so you'll get the gist of it, here are a few of their existing channel idents. (car engines revving) (record humming) (record spinning) (upbeat music) (splattering) (washer spinning) (fish plopping in water) (drums beating) (upbeat music) (splattering) (upbeat music) (whooshing) (whooshing) (upbeat music) (drums beating) (wheel turning) (drums beating) (wheel spinning) (switch flipping) (whooshing) (upbeat music) Now I welcome you to browse through this page and take a look at the entire graphic packaging. And if you'll do it, you'll probably notice that it is all in Hebrew, which makes perfect sense because this channel currently broadcasts only in Israel. So I gave myself a case study mission to create for them a channel ID in English. And this is what this course is all about. Now before we'll start, we need to define few basic rules in the shape of a client brief. This will help us to stay focused and this is also what we'll review in the next movie.
