- If you need to troubleshoot, because maybe After Effects is misbehaving or even crashing, the first place to start would be resetting the preferences. This should be the first step that you do in any troubleshooting. But what are preferences? There are a lot of aspects to using After Effects and some can be customized. Here is where the preferences come in. Here is where you can find preferences, on Windows under Edit, Preferences, and on the macOS under After Effects, Preferences. Let's go ahead and click on General. In here, you can choose to show tool tips, to create layers at composition start time, et cetera, et cetera. You can also choose to change the color picker. For example, you could use the system color picker. You can play sound when the render finishes or not, et cetera, et cetera. Let's go to the Previews section.
