Achieving proper contrast in video graphics
- Video is often compressed, and as such it has a loss of detail. Getting improved contrast can really help things stand out, and create an image that visually pops. There's lots of things we can do to achieve this. Let's start here with a simple file that is a TIFF file, not a RAW image. If we look at the histogram data here, I see that there's not a lot of detail in the highlights, and the shadows aren't that far off either. Well, a curves adjustment is an easy way to do this. Taking the On Image tool here, I can click on an area. And if I drag up, that part gets brighter. You see the highlights got brighter. I can come here towards the middle, and pull down a little bit. And that restores the mid-tone. Let's come over here into sort of the shadows of the cave and pull down a little more. And now the shadows got richer and darker. If we toggle that on and off, you see that the contrast is significantly better. Well, the traditional S-curve shape makes this possible. Now if you don't…
