- [Instructor] Design is a powerful mechanism to influence and encourage user behavior. While design patterns encourage usable and consistent user experience, dark patterns use deceptive practices to influence behavior. In fact, this practice has recently gained some attention in the United States, with the proposed legislative bill encouraging tech companies to have their own review boards to ensure user interfaces aren't manipulative or intending to deceive consumers. The New York Times also wrote an article about dark patterns in e-commerce, shedding light on shady practices of falsifying data and using fake names, locations, and data to create a fear of missing out on a deal. As UX designers, we represent the voice of the user while meeting the needs of the business. Sometimes, there's tensions in this role.
