Learn about the benefits of using a stylus.
- [Instructor] Your finger is perhaps one of the most sensitive things that you own, and the processing of all of the information that it has to deal with, of course, is taken care of by that beautiful thing inside your head. On a device they've got some pretty clever stuff in there, but they're several million years behind where we are perhaps, and how that relates to mobile drawing is that if I make a stroke here with my finger, and I'll do quickly as well as slowly, and I'll press really hard, and of course none of that is conveyed to the drawing here through the device, because it doesn't know how to deal with it.
Now to compensate for that some brushes have a mechanism where you can get variable strokes, such as this tapered brush, by it moving more slowly or quickly, like that, but you're not in control of that as much as perhaps you'd like to be. So if you're serious about mobile drawing, or using some of the other mobile ideation tools that are around out there, you're going to need to invest in a stylus. Just for comparison, I'll make a stroke here with the tapered brush and then I'll make the same stroke with the Apple Pencil and you can see how much variation there is there.
And if I switch to the rounded brush and do the similar thing with my finger there and then with the Apple Pencil you can see I've got a huge amount of variation. So if you're not on the iPad Pro using the Apple Pencil you're going to need to look at a stylus and in the next movie we'll give you some tips on what to look for.
