ActionScript and the environment

So, to get started, let's first talk about what we're going to cover in this title. Obviously, this is about ActionScript and, specifically, we're going to be talking about ActionScript as it relates to Flash MX 2004. Now there are two versions of Flash MX 2004. There's the regular version and then the professional version and, actually, you might be surprised to know that ActionScript really facilitates you doing all the same kinds of things in both versions, so you don't have to worry if you have one version or the other.

Everything that we cover in this title is going to work in both versions. So you should be okay with that. We're also going to be talking a lot about ActionScript 2.0. Now, you might not yet be familiar with the difference between what Macromedia is calling ActionScript 1.0 and ActionScript 2.0. ActionScript 1.0 is the - sort of the original version of ActionScript. So, if you used ActionScript in Flash 5 or Flash MX, then that's the ActionScript that you've used in the past.

ActionScript 2.0 is sort of a new version of ActionScript, but don't worry, it's not entirely different. It's not going to be like learning Chinese if you grew up learning English. It's going to be very similar and, in fact, it's going to make things a lot easier for you as you're learning to code. So, hopefully, what you're going to get out of the lessons in this title is that you'll learn how to use ActionScript in order to do all of the kinds of things that you want to do. If you've seen cool things on the web, or you've seen cool things that friends have done, then a lot of the real power of Flash is in ActionScript and so, when you're done with all of the lessons in this tutorial, then you should be able to sit down and take the ideas and make them really work in Flash and really unveil all of the power that's hidden inside of there.

So let's go ahead and get started.
