How annoying is it to get a PDF that's floating in the middle of a letter size sheet? It'd be worse if it was the size a billboard, but still, it's annoying. You've got this white area all around here. When you go to place that in your Page Layout application you have to then manually bring the box in the sides, and it's just a hassle. Okay, well let's crop it. That sounds simple because we've done it in Photoshop all these years. But there's a little thing that you need to know here. Now I'm in Acrobat 10 so we're going to go to View, tools, Pages, and there's my Crop tool.
It's under advanced Editing tools in Acrobat 9. Now I can draw a simple crop, there we go. Not a bad idea if you want to zoom in on it to be really exact. That's fine too. So, we'll grab that corner and kinda move it in a little bit more. Grab that corner, I think that looks pretty good there. Move this back out just a little bit more. Okay, we'll just say that's good, and I'm going to double-click inside that box. Okay, so it's giving me some dimensions here, that may or may not mean anything to you, because this one's not even floating in the middle of the page, and that's usually where it is. The ad is up here in the corner, or down here and I can tell it all sorts of controls here, but really what we're worried about is cropping it down to that.
So, let's just leave that alone. Let's leave these alone for right now and hit OK. Now, if I hit Cmd+0, it looks like I did a pretty good job there. So, I'm going to go to File, Save As and notice in Acrobat 10 you have to then choose I want a PDF, so let's go ahead and do that. And I'm going to tell it, this is pixelriffic cropped, 'kay, so let's go ahead and save that. Now let's switch to InDesign. I'm in InDesign, I'm going to go to File > Place, and I'm going to choose the cropped file there.
Now if you leave this alone, this is off by default, and you hit OK, chances are, this is what you're dealing with, is this big bounding box now that you're fighting to make it fit around the art. Well, let's stop that today. Okay? From now on when you go file place, turn on show import options when you grab that cropped file. Hit OK. And you can tell it to crop to the art. Notice the preview that dropped in there? Now, you can choose different ones and in this case multiples are the same except for media cuz it's still seeing the letter size page. As the media, but if I choose art, and hit OK, now when I drop that in there let's just make that a one column ad, that's it, I'm done, I don't have to go in and crop it down any more cause I told it, go where that crop is that I made. All right, so even though you know that that Media Box is there, you don't even have to mess with it.
Just change it in the Show Import Options and you're done. And now this document is cropped to the size that you need.
