The Access database engine keeps track of changes made to the system through a series of internal logs. Over time, these logs can grow in size and take up a significant amount of disk space. With the Compact and Repair tool, users can clean up any old logs, rebuild indexes, and perform other general health checks on the database.
- [Instructor] When working with your database files,…Access keeps track of the changes…that you're making in the background…and when you delete an object or lots of records,…Access doesn't actually give you…that disk space back right away.…If you notice that your database is running slower…or you'd like to squeeze the file size down…as much possible,…you can use a little tool called compact and repair.…You'll find the compact and repair tool…either on the database tools tab here…in the very first position…or you can also find it if you go to the file tab…and in the info section,…you'll find a copy of it there as well.…Either place will accomplish the same task.…
Now when you click on the button,…Access will close the database file…then run through some routine maintenance tasks.…It throws out old log-in information, rebuilds indexes…and just generally cleans up after itself.…Then the database file is saved again and reopened.…Now for some databases, the compact and repair process…is so quick that you might only notice a little blink…
