Choosing the right data type

- [Instructor] As you build your Access tables the default data type is short text, and for good reason. Nearly all the fields you add to your first and future tables will contain some short combination of text and numbers and maybe even symbols. This includes phone numbers, social security numbers, zip codes, and serial numbers, fields some users would be tempted to set up with number as the data type. But that would be a mistake. And speaking of mistakes, in this lesson I'll show you the data types that I've applied to the fields in the starting customers table, and tell you why each type was chosen. You'll notice that most of them are still short text, including the phone number and zip code fields. So we have AutoNumber on the ID field, the primary key field, and AutoNumber just means that Access will assign its own number to each record you create. Company name, first name, address, city, state, zip, status, email, phone, mobile number, these are still short text fields. When we…
