- So many plugins use gain as a function…of how they behave or how they respond.…And you always want to make sure that you read up…on the plugins that you're using in your projects…to see how they're meant to be used.…So for example, any vintage style compressors…or saturation units will add harmonics to the signal…if you push them really hard…or if you push a lot of signal going in…past say what their designated input gain is supposed to be.…Now in some cases, this produces a desirable result.…In other cases, it also means you lose the clean signal,…and you end up coloring the signal with some sort of…distortion or saturation effects.…
Our rule of thumb is to make sure that the signal going in…to each Plug-in is the same loudness coming in…as it is coming out, even when that Plug-in is bypassed.…And what this was referred to is unity gain…or same input equals same output level.…And this ensures that when you're testing your plug-ins…and using them in your projects,…you can easily hear whether that plug-in…is adding something or removing something.…
