Join Brian Bradley for an in-depth discussion in this video The mental ray ActiveShade mode, part of Learning mental ray in 3ds Max.
…One very nice render feature that has been available in 3ds Max for…quite some time now is the ActiveShade render mode.…This is an interactive render window or viewport that updates,…that is re-renders each time an officially supported change is made in the scene.…Up until 3ds Max 2015 though, this feature has only officially been supported by…the original 3ds Max Scanline as well as in more recent times, iRay Renderers.…I say officially supported because a Mental Ray version of ActiveShade has been…technically possible and available in 3ds Max for quite some time now.…
It just hasn't been exposed through the user interface controls.…Happily, this is no longer the case.…Turning Mental Ray's ActiveShade mode on,…is a process identical to that of the Scanline and iRay versions.…In that, all we need do is open up the Render Setup dialog,…jump into the Common tab, and then come down to the Assign Renderer Rollout.…In here, we want to click on the Choose Renderer button for the ActiveShade slot,…and then of course select the Mental Ray option.…
