A brief history of character animation
- [Instructor] The 12 principles of animation are the foundation for animators everywhere. They are squash and stretch, anticipation, staging, straight ahead action and pose to pose, follow-through, slow in and out, arcs, secondary action, timing and spacing, exaggeration, solid drawing, and appeal. The 12 principles of animation were introduced by animators Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston in their seminal book The Illusion of Life. These were the lessons that they had learned spending many years at the Walt Disney Animation Studios. In the beginning, animation followed a really crude, rubber hose kind of movement, as you can see right here, from a small cartoon from the 1930s. But a man by the name of Eadweard Muybridge began taking high-speed photos of animals and people in locomotion. His work would pioneer the film technology that we still use today.
