The V-Ray alSurface material
- [Instructor] Although there is no shortage of materials that can be used and material effects that can be created in V-Ray, one of the latest additions to the material family has a lot of people really excited, not only because of its ability to create exceptionally realistic skintight materials but also because of its versatility, this being the new V-Ray alSurface material. The AL in the shader name actually refers to Anders Langlands, the VFX artist and supervisor who in the past wrote a whole series of AL shaders for the Arnold render engine from salt angle which is of course now found in 3ds Max. His idea was to add production-based shaders to the Arnold engine that he felt better suited his own VFX needs, one of the most used shaders in this group being alSurface, an uber shader capable of recreating most surface types, most notably subsurface volumes such as skin and indeed it is this aspect of the shader that the V-Ray implementation has focused on, having neither refraction…
