- [Instructor] The introduction of open shading language, or OSL, has vastly increased the creative capabilities of the 3ds Max Material Editor. We can do things that we could never do before. This week we're going to look at a non-photo realistic rendering style, which is called halftone dots. And it will simulate the effect of halftone printing. We can make this character here look like he was printed in a comic book. And in the following weeks we'll expand upon that and see how to incorporate lighting and render resolution into a shading network. Let's begin by adding the halftone dots map. I'll open up the Material Editor. Here is the material currently assigned to the character. And it's in Realistic Shading mode. Let's break connection to the base color map, and create a new base color map. Just drag out from the base color map input. Release the mouse and choose OSL, Textures, Halftone Dots.
