Learn how to apply OSL maps in shading networks in 3ds Max.
- [Instructor] The OSL map in 3ds Max 2019…is a new category of texture maps…driven by a scripting language.…OSL stands for Open Shading Language,…which was developed at Sony Pictures Imageworks…for the Arnold renderer.…It's also supported by other renderers, such as Cycles,…and to some extent, by the 3ds Max Scanline…and Quicksilver renderers.…OSL allows anyone to write their own shader code…and compile it at render time.…
That opens up a lot of possibilities…for procedural texture maps.…Currently only texture maps are supported in 3ds Max,…full-blown OSL materials don't exist yet.…We have to plug our texture into a material node…in order to apply it onto an object.…Another way of saying that OSL materials don't exist…is that 3ds Max does not yet support OSL closures.…A closure is the final local definition of the shader.…
Closure marks the boundary…between the shader output information…and what the renderer does with that information.…As the OSL technical standard evolves…hopefully we will see closures in 3ds Max,…
