Join Brian Bradley for an in-depth discussion in this video Global illumination overview, part of Learning mental ray in 3ds Max.
…In theory, Mental Ray has a number of powerful Global Illumination or…GI systems, that can be used to create or…recreate pretty much any lighting scenario required.…The engines available are Photon Mapping, previously referred to in 3ds Max as…Plane Global Illumination, Final Gather, Irradiance Particles, and Importons.…Now, I use the phrase in theory with regard to these engine because only two of…them, Photon Mapping and…Final Gather, are currently exposed through the 3ds Max you buy.…The other two, that is Irradiance Particles and Importons, can only be…accessed by means of the String Options Rollout that we looked at in chapter one.…This means they're not currently supported officially by the Max team at Autodesk,…and so we make use of them at our own peril.…For this reason, then, we will focus exclusively in…this chapter on the two officially supported Global Illumination tools,…which, as we've noted, are Photons and Final Gather.…To access the controls for these systems, we will need to open up the Render Setup…
