If you are a premium member of the lynda.com online training library, you have access to the entire set of exercise files used for the duration of this course. These are located in the exercise files folder in which I've placed on my desktop. You can, of course, feel free to place this folder and its accompanying files anywhere that you like. There are start scenes to go along with most of the movies in the course, and these reside in sub-folders located inside the 3DS Max Project folder. With each sub-folder having been named according to its corresponding chapter.
It isn't in any way essential that you make use of these files in order to follow along with and benefit from this course as you can quite easily make use of your own scene files should you want or need to. If you are a monthly or annual subscriber to lynda.com, you won't have access to the exercise files themselves. But again, you will be able to quite happily work through this course using 3DS Max Scene Files of your own.
Instructor Joel Bradley explains what UVWs are, how they affect textures, and why they are needed. He also reviews the different mapping spaces that are available and how procedural maps are used in texturing. Then he progresses to the hands-on portion of the course, starting with mapping simple shapes and models with the UVW modifier. He also reviews advanced topics, such as unwrapping and editing UVs with the UVW Editor. Finally, he introduces blended box mapping, for when you need to get a model ready for texturing quickly.
