of a mesh object. Each vertex on a mesh can be colored and we can use those colors in many ways. We could render the vertex colors directly which is a common method for stylized renderings with a retro or low fidelity look to them. Vertex colors can have many other uses such as storing illumination data, Today we'll use vertex color to paint a mask between two maps on a material. This method has advantages over using the viewport canvas paint tools in 3ds Max. Vertex color is stored directly into the mesh object and does not reference any external image file, so there's no asset management to worry about. Changes are easy to make because we don't need to worry about different versions of a bitmap image, again because the vertex color data doesn't refer to any external file. The disadvantage of vertex paint is that it's topology dependent. If you edit the mesh in any way that adds or removes vertices, the vertex color data will move around on the object.
