Creating Sky Portals by direction of light
When you're lighting a scene with sky portals. Once you've got the mental ray physical sky in the environment dialogue, and you've tone mapped the camera by putting in the photographic exposure, you can create your sky portals, putting them on to the windows so that the light blooms in through those openings. What I'll do is to select my window frames and right-click and choose Hide Unselected. Then I'll go into a right view by pressing V for view and choosing Right. I'll press Z to zoom extents and F3 for a wire frame. I'll also press Shift+F to turn off that save frame. And now I'm ready to create my portal nodes. I'll choose Create > Lights. And under Photometric Lights there's my sky portal. What I'm going to do here is to turn on my two and a half D snap, so this way my portals are snapped to all the windows but all created on one plane. I'll fly out my snap and choose 2 and a half, and I'll make sure that it's set to vertices by holding Shift and right-clicking, and choosing…
