UVW mapping plays quite a big part in Unreal not only in terms of textures but also in the lighting. Seams and layouts can make texturing either easier or harder. On top of this fact, Unreal uses 2 UV map channels: one to store texture UVs, and the other for Lightmass UVs which is Unreal's indirect lighting engine. Knowing how Unreal uses UVW mapping is essential to the texturing and asset workflows.
- [Instructor] UV coordinates exist as a way of solving … a particular problem in the creation of 3D assets … whether that be for arch phase, product phase or for games. … Given that we as texture artists need to be able … to take the information inside either an image map … or mathematically generated procedural map … and then apply that to the surface of a static mesh … in our scene or level. … Enter UV mapping, which actually tells our game engine … where on the surface of the 3D model it's ought to attach … the aforementioned texture to. … The importance of this being seen in that in many ways, … our perception of what an asset in an Unreal scene … is supposed to be made from … is directly tied to the texture map supplied to it. … If badly applied UVs cause distortion … or other artifacts to appear in those maps, … then the illusion of the reality … that we are trying to convey to the user … will most definitely be broken. … In a game engine such as Unreal, UVs also perform a second …
