Image-based lighting

- We've been using the sky backgrounds for a few videos now but we haven't talked about what makes them the lighting source in our scenes. If you use a 3D programme you might be used to light being a point in 3D space. The light emanates, or is cast, from these lights. But Toolbag is different. Its ambient light comes from those backgrounds that we've been using. This lighting technique is called Image Based Lighting and deserves a closer look. Image Based Lighting or IBL, is a 3D rendering technique that involves capturing real world light or information. Usually we see this represented as an image file that shows a 180 or 360 environment. Now we've seen those images here in our Sky Browser, these are those 180 or 360 degree environments. By changing these environments, well, we change the light in our scene. Right now I have the backgrounds turned off, but you can see as I click on them they still affect the model. This 180 or 360 degree scene is then projected down on the model…
