A valid question that texture artists will ask is: "When should a texture actually be used and when should the detail be placed inside the mesh itself?" This video touches on the pros and cons of both, and when and why you might want to think about using one over another, as well as their impact on our game engine.
- [Instructor] There are of course, … many considerations that need to be taken into account, … when creating Real-Time assets. … One of the more important being the choice of whether we … are to create detail in our scene … at the geometry or texture level. … In other words, we will need to decide what … will actually be modeled into the Static Mesh now, … with DCC application, and what will be added … or faked as part of the material creation process. … Now, the decision as to which way we actually go, … will of course, vary greatly from project to project, … and probably also from mesh to mesh inside a given project. … Here though, are just a few points that we … need to keep in mind that can on occasion, … help us decide which way we ought to go. … The first being a consideration … of just how important the object under discussion … is to the success of either the shot … or projects that we are working on. … If it is a focal point in the scene, … our level for instance then, we … may want to spend more of our polygon resources …
