Join Mike Meyers for an in-depth discussion in this video RAM capacity, part of CompTIA A+ Exam Prep (220-902) Part 2: Putting Pieces Together.
- I wanna talk to you about capacity here for a minute.…Different RAM sticks have different capacities…in terms of the amount of memory they hold.…I've got two DDR sticks I front of me.…One holds half a gigabyte,…and the other one is one gigabyte.…And you can't tell just by looking at them.…If you're lucky, it's on the label,…and if you're buying RAM, you're telling them ahead of time…how much you want.…But capacity is very, very important.…When you're installing RAM,…in general, we like to install the same capacity.…
You can get away with a couple of things,…but in general, you wanna install at the same capacity…at all times.…And RAM is additive, so if I've got two one gigabyte sticks…and I put them into a computer,…that computer's gonna have two gigabytes of RAM.…Now, you might think to yourself, in today's world,…I can go and buy great big sticks,…16 gigabyte sticks of DDR3.…Even if your motherboard's DDR3,…that doesn't necessarily mean you can use it.…You've got to reference your motherboard book,…and if you don't have a motherboard book,…
In Part 2, Mike Meyers helps you understand all the pieces that comprise the modern computer: RAM, power supplies, hard drives, and peripherals. Though 220-902 focuses on operating systems and software, a solid foundation in hardware will help you understand how all the pieces fit together. In Chapter 5, Mike shows how to build a basic PC, and install a fresh copy of Windows.
