Even though we're using the underscores theme as the basis for a custom theme, the process of creating a new theme means writing a lot of code. To help you follow along and avoid having to write out every line of code while you watch I've created a series of lesson files for this course. To get these lesson files, you can go to the course page on lynda.com and download the free or premium exercise files. The free exercise files contains everything you need to follow this course.
Within the exercise files there are three folders. One called code snippets, which contains the code snippets, one called images, which contains a single image we'll be using later on in the course, and finally, a ZIP archive that contains the version of underscores that I used when I created this course. Later on in the course I'll explain how you can use either this zipped version of underscores, or create your own. The most important component of the exercise files is the code snippets folder. If you open the code snippets folder, you find a single index.html page.
And when you open this page in your browser, you'll see this page contains all the code snippets for the entre course. Here I've split each of the code snippets into the individual chapter and individual movie, so you can see both the movie number and the movie name. And you can navigate to any movie you like using this menu here at the top. When you navigate to a movie, you'll see the name of the movie again so you know where you are. And here I've split up all the code snippets into the individual files they'll be slotted into. So, as we progress through the course, I'll either write out the code by hand, or I'll copy the code from the code snippets file that you have right here and paste it in to different places within my theme.
As I do so, I'll explain to you how these pieces of code work and what they do. And that way, you can either use these pieces of code for your own theme, right now, as you're following along in the course, or when you're done following the course and you're building your own theme from scratch, you can come back to this code snippets file and grab the pieces of code that you'd like to use in your new theme and just slot them in. Because everything you find within this code snippets file will be something you can use for another theme later. If you're a premium subscriber to lynda.com, you have additional lesson files and they come in the form of a fourth folder called start points.
Within this folder, there's a folder for each chapter of the course, and within that folder there's a folder for each individual movie. These individual movie folders contain the theme as it was when I started recording that movie. That mean, if you're following along in this course and you're a premium subscriber and you want to jump right in at say Chapter Seven, Movie Number Three. All you have to do is copy out the code straight from this folder and place it into your theme folder and then you'll start at the exact same point that I'm starting at.
That also means. If you think you've made a mistake and you just still want to continue, you can always just install the theme for the next movie or if you make a mistake while you're working, you can always just revert back to the original state of the movie by simply resetting your files using these folders.
