Now that you have WordPress installed and running, we need to get a copy of the Underscores theme as the basis for the rest of this course. Underscores is a starter theme built specifically to be used as the starting point for new custom themes. It's in constant development and you'll often see changes to the code base on a daily basis. This means that by using Underscores, you'll always be working with the latest and greatest WordPress has to offer. It also means that as the theme changes, you have to adjust your process.
Underscores is available from the official site here at underscores.me. And you can also get it directly from the GitHub repository at github.com/automattic/_s. Following this course, you now have two options. Use the version of Underscores provided in the free exercise files to match my quote exactly. That version is found under the exercise files folder, and it's here a zipped archive called My Simone.
Or get a fresh copy of underscores directly from Underscores.me. If you choose the latter option you may have to adjust your cold slightly for it to work the same way mine does. The functionality will be the same but small parts of the actual code may be slightly different. If this is the first time you're building a new theme you may want to stick with the bundled version. If you already have some experience with themes or you want an added challenge, go ahead and get a fresh copy.
If you want to use the bundled theme, simply download the lesson files onto your computer. If you wanted to use a fresh copy, you can go to underscores.me, and from here you need to set a theme name. So here, I suggest you pick the same theme name as me which is, my-simone. And then, click Generate. Now this website will generate a new theme based on underscores that has your theme name. And download it onto your computer as a zip file exactly as the one you saw in my lesson files.
Once you have the bundle theme or the new theme, available on your computer, you can log into your WordPress site. Go to the Admin panel. Navigate to Appearance and Themes. And from here we can add a new theme by clicking Add New. And then instead of picking an existing theme, I'm going to click on Upload Theme. Which allows me to upload a new theme to WordPress from my computer. So, here I can go to choose file and navigate either to my downloads folder to grab the new version of the theme I downloaded.
Or I can take the one from my lesson files here. So here you upload the zipped archive with the name of your theme. So I click Open and Install Now and the theme is now installed into my computer. Now you may notice there are some gigantic error messages on my screen. That's because I'm currently running WAMP, and WAMP has some de-bugging modes activated. So it will tell me when something is not quite right. But these error messages you're seeing here on my screen, and, error messages you might see on your screen.
If your theme is installed successfully, which it should be, you can now click on Activate. To activate the theme. And now, you'll see the thumbnail for the Underscores theme is this blank thumbnail here and now that the theme is activated. We can jump to the front page. When you go the front end of the site you'll see what looks like a broken site with no styling. And that's exactly what you want. Now you have a clean slate to work with and you can make the theme your own.
