From the course: Sketching an F1 Wheel with SketchBook Pro

Feasibility and hard points

Before we get started with sketching, let's talk a little bit about feasibility and hard points. Feasibility is a huge subject, and we won't be covering it in detail in this particular course, but it's worth mentioning some of the factors that can have an influence on our final design. So here we have the profile of the steering wheel. And also we have some, criteria that's overlaid on top. Let's take a look at this in detail. So being a steering wheel, we have a pivot point in the middle here. So we need to consider a clearance envelope to our environment. Also, in the green circles, these can represent clearances for thumbs and fingers. So right now, we have an issue right in this corner. So we may have to change our design like so. Another area to consider is attachments. This is a two-piece component, so we need an attachment point here, here, and here. This can be given to us by engineering and tooling. So we need to make sure that we enough clearance between this particular dial and that attachment point. Another area to consider is the actual clearance between the buttons themselves. The operation of this button can inadvertently affect this button here. At the very top here, we have a typical section through one of the attachments. Lets take a look at this section in detail. So right now I have a draft angle of three degrees. This draft angle could be dictated by the type of material we using, the shrink rate, and also the type of finish that we're trying to get onto this particular surface right here. This 3 degrees would apply to this surface, to this surface, and these here. Also we need to consider what type of radius we're going to put in here. Does this radius give us enough flat surface that would allow us to put this attachment in? Also we need to strengthen this part. So we have a rib here, a rib here, and on this side as well. And these ribs have their own criteria. At a later stage, engineering could come back and change this attachment method, which requires a longer extension to this piece like that. Now it's not always possible to have all these criteria at an early stage, as we are in right now in the sketching. But it could come at a later date and we need to be aware that it could change the design quite considerably.
