If possible, view this page first in 24-bit, then in 8-bit

My conclusions follow:

The JPEG is definitely smaller and looks better in 24-bit.
The JPEG also looks as good as any of the others in 8-bit. Motto: Use JPEGs for
photos whenever possible.

If you need to use GIFs, the GIF saved with an
adaptive palette looks better than those saved with a Mac System palette or the
Browser Safe CLUT from my book Designing Web Graphics.

Image saved in adaptive 8-bit palette (35k)

Image saved in 8-bit using the Browser-safe clut(50k)

Image saved as a 24-bit JPEG in low compression(11k)

Image saved using the Mac System palette (52k)
