Making models hollow with opacity maps
Depending on the result you're going for, you might want to print your model solid or hollow. Solid models use more material and are more expensive to print through a service like Shapeways. Hollow models can save you money. In this video I'll show you how to turn a solid model into a hollow model with opacity maps. This process is unnecessary when printing on a Maker Bot, or other filament based printer, because of the way they fill hollow spaces on their own. So I've got the bull_open.obj file from the exercise files. Now this is what's known as an open model. Let me show you why. I'm just going to rotate around the model a little bit here. And around to the back side. And you can see that the model is open in the back. Let me turn on lines so we can see that a little bit more clearly. Okay, so this model has no thickness, and this is usually bad for 3D printing. This is because the polygonal surface is completely thin. There's no material to print.
