Duarte Design

Newest Creative Inspiration: Duarte Design

Duarte Design is on a mission to change the world, one PowerPoint presentation at a time. Nancy and Mark Duarte, the wife-and-husband team behind Al Gore’s famous slide show about global warming, have built a thriving business out of creating high-impact PowerPoint and Keynote presentations. Their company has become the go-to presentation resource for some of high technology’s most visible companies, such as Adobe, Cisco, and HP. Nancy will be the first to tell you that it’s not the technology that matters most, but the story. This installment of Creative Inspirations tells the story of how this power duo elevated PowerPoint presentations to arguably the most compelling form of modern media.

AIGA Design Legends Gala

6th Annual AIGA Design Legends Gala
Thursday, September 17
At The Waldorf-Astoria in New York City

lynda.com is a proud sponsor of the Design Legends Gala 09, an annual fundraising event honoring those whose work inspires designers of all ages, sets the bar for creativity and innovation, and defines the design profession as we know it. The AIGA medal will be awarded to Pablo Ferro, Carin Goldberg and Doyald Young at this wonderful celebration.

We’ve secured a table for 12, and have 10 seats available to individual donors who would like to visit and dine with lynda.com founders, Bruce and Lynda. Because of our level of sponsorship, there are a few extras like attending a VIP reception beforehand, meeting the medalists, and attending an after party. Cost $400.00 per person– tax-deductible. Lynda published a blog post that includes more information about this event.

AIGA Make/Think AIGA Design Conference

Make/Think AIGA Design Conference
October 8 – 11 2009
Memphis, TN

Lynda, Bruce and several other key lynda.com staff are attending Make/Think, the 2009 AIGA design conference that explores the dual roles of designers as makers of beautiful things and strategic problem solvers. Join us in Memphis this October with a stellar group of main stage speakers, dozens of specialized affinity sessions, roundtables with design luminaries, the excitement of “Command X: Season 2,” hands-on activities, workshops, studio tours and plenty of networking. If you’re planning to attend, send us an email. We are planning a lynda.com membership meetup!

HOT Tip of the Month

“How to add a SWF file to an Adobe PDF File”
from Acrobat 9 Pro: Creating Multimedia Projects
with Brian Wood

Anything that you produced in Flash and saved as a SWF or FLV file can be added to an Adobe Acrobat 9 file: Add animations, interactive maps, you name it. If you’re a Flash developer you can use ActionScript.

Go up to Multimedia in the tool bar, and choose the Flash Tool. To add the content, we can click and drag to draw where the multimedia is going to go within that box, or we can simply double click and the Flash file will be placed at that point at 100 percent of its size.

When you Double click on your document, the Insert Flash dialog box opens. Either choose the file with the Browse button, or you can stream an SWF file from a server by entering a URL. Choose “Snap to content proportions” to keep the SWF file in the right perspective (unless you don’t want it to be).

Click OK, and your Flash file will be in place. Note the Play button on the file: Click that to activate the Flash file within your PDF.
