mocha has always been very popular as a tracking tool, but with the rising interest in stereo 3D conversion, its rotoscoping capabilities have become a favorite player in that pipeline and sales have soared. In this course, Steve Wright covers the basics of operating mocha, as well as advanced tracking and rotoscoping techniques. The course also covers the mocha/Nuke stereo 3D production pipeline in detail.
Mocha has a series of Control panels over here on the left for setting shape attributes. They are all ghosted when you first start mocha, so we will need to load a project to take a look. So let's go to File, Recent Files, and let's go get the lantern boy. Even if you never saved lantern boy, mocha makes a project file for you. So first I am going to draw a shape. Right mouse click to close, and over here in the Layer Controls, we need a little more room so I'll just find that line there and you can click and drag and move it down.
It's called Layer Controls because you can actually put more than one spline in a layer. Now that's really a feature used for the tracking, and we'll be taking a look at that in Lesson 2. Right now, let's take a look at the Layer Controls and what they do. We looked at a few of these in an earlier video, but now we will look at all of them. I am going to need a little more room, so I'm going to delete down here the Overlay Colors Panel, and now I've got more room to adjust the Layer Control Panel. Starting on the left, this is the visibility button, of course.
This little cogwheel enables tracking for that spline. We will be learning more about that again in Lesson 2. This field here is for the lock. And notice when you lock the layer, all the control handles disappear. So if your spline has no control handles, the first thing you want to think of is maybe that layer is locked. The next field here is for renaming, so we can rename this anything we want, which is really important to do. And this last square is the color of the line.
This red square is referring to this red spline and if I deselect by clicking off to the side, the line turns purple and so does the chip. As mentioned earlier, these color chips can be used to help organize and group your splines. Now, let's take a look at the bottom row of control buttons down here. The one on the left will duplicate a layer, so I will select this layer, click on the Duplicate button. Then I come over to the viewer and there is my duplicate. I am going to turn off the zoom Windows here.
For the rest of these I need a couple of more splines, so I am just going to draw a real quick shape here and another one over here. Okay, I have got four shapes. This is the Delete a shape button. All you do is select the Layer and click the Delete button. This next button will lock all of them or unlock all of them. But this one is very cool. You can select one layer, and it will lock all the other layers, leaving that one unlocked. That way you can select once spline out of many, and come over here and adjust it.
Another feature of these control panels is they can be floated. Click on this little button right here, edit a float panel, put it anywhere you want. To re-dock it, select the white bar on the top, drag it over to the panel area, and when you see the dotted white lines, let go. And we'll adjust it for some more space here. There. You can also completely close any one of the panels by clicking on this little button right here, and to put it back, you go to the View popup, find the panel that you're missing, and select it to put it back where it belongs.
Next, we will take a look at the Layer Properties Panel over here.
