Alternatives to jQuery

Video: Alternatives to jQuery

jQuery is hardly the only kid in town, so let's take a look at a few alternatives that you might also consider. Zepto is a sort of direct competitor of jQuery. It's a smaller library that has cut support for older versions of Internet Explorer entirely. If you're working with say, Zurb Foundation, the prototyping toolkit, it's compatible with either jQuery or Zepto, so you could look at if you're working with the foundation. Mootools is a similar library that seeks to accomplish a lot of the same goals as jQuery, but is also a little smaller, it's not nearly as popular, but you can take a look at it.

jQuery is hardly the only kid in town, so let's take a look at a few alternatives that you might also consider.

The next two I'm going to put together, YUI and Ext JS, these are both JavaScript libraries that also include a lot of user interface widgets, so you can take a look at those if you're building web applications or the like. And then these next two I'm going to group together as well, Chibi and pretty much everything on microjs.com. Chibi is a very small library, I think it might be about 10% of the size of jQuery, but for some of the major functionality it covers a lot of the same ground. You can find that on GitHub. It's also found on microjs.com, which is a collection of a bunch of JavaScript micro frameworks that cover very small, very targeted use cases.

So if you're looking for help in some aspect of writing JavaScript, take a look at microjs.com, and see if there's something that will directly target the kind of thing you're trying to accomplish, and maybe you'll find something that will solve it in a much smaller code footprint than jQuery. So there's a few alternatives you can look at.
