Anyone looking for a fast and easy way to build a great web site can use iWeb to bring together and post photos and videos that were created using other iLife '09 applications. Instructor Garrick Chow demonstrates the basic functions and the new features of this application in iWeb '09 Essential Training. Garrick shows how to create and publish everything from basic web pages containing text and images to more involved pages with video. He also demonstrates how to create blogs and podcast pages. Exercise file accompany the course.
When you publish your site to your MobileMe account, the default address for it is web.me.com/user name. And currently that automatically brings up my Welcome page, which in this case is fine. You can see up here the address has been forwarded to web.me.com/ user name/travel/Welcome.html. What if I want a different page to show up first? There may be times when you want a special announcement page to come up first or something like that.
And in other web design programs, this can be a surprisingly difficult or tedious task to accomplish, but it's super easy to do on iWeb. Let's go back to iWeb, and let's say that my podcast has become so popular that I want the main podcast page to be the first thing that people see when they visit my site. All I have to do is drag the podcast page up, and again we see this blue line up here. Wherever that line is, when I let go off my mouse, that's where the page will be moved to. So I'm going to move that just under the name of my site, like so. That makes the first page of my site. You can see it also changed positions of navigation bar. So having moved to the podcast to the top of the sidebar, I'm going to click publish site again.
I am not going to click visit now. I'm going to manually enter that address again in Safari. Let me just delete that. So again I'm going to web.me.com/username, hit Return. So now when I visit my website, the podcast page is the first thing that shows up. This is one of those things that's probably not that impressive if you haven't done much web design before, but if you have, you know how of a pain something like switching to default page around can be.
