Anyone looking for a fast and easy way to build a great web site can use iWeb to bring together and post photos and videos that were created using other iLife '09 applications. Instructor Garrick Chow demonstrates the basic functions and the new features of this application in iWeb '09 Essential Training. Garrick shows how to create and publish everything from basic web pages containing text and images to more involved pages with video. He also demonstrates how to create blogs and podcast pages. Exercise file accompany the course.
In this video, I want to quickly go over the special buttons you can add to your pages in iWeb. Let's go back to the Welcome page. Under the Insert menu, under Button, you will find three items you can add to any location on any page in your site, Email Me, Hit Counter and Made on a Mac. Now, the first one, Email Me, when I select it adds a button that when a visitor clicks it, will open his or her email program with your email address already entered in the To field. Now this is different than the type of email link I showed you how to create earlier in the movie on Links. How this email link behaves depends on where you are publishing your iWeb site to. Basically, if you publish your site to your MobileMe account, clicking the Email Me button opens a new mail message with your MobileMe email address already filled in a To field.
If you publish your site to any server other than MobileMe, the Email Me button opens a new message using the MeCard in your Address Book. So if you open up your Address Book application, the email address list for you here will be the email address that will appear when people click your Email Me link. There's also a third option for setting where the Email Me button goes. You can select the site in your iWeb sidebar and fill out the Contact Email address field and then that will become the address that the Email Me button emails to, overwriting your MobileMe address if you have one and the address in your Address Book.
So the main difference between the Email Me button and creating an Email link manually is that the Email Me button has one default address. While creating a manual link let's you determine the address on a link-by-link basis, which can be useful when you want to link to email addresses other than your own, like if you want to provide a link to a friend or a co-worker's email address for example and that's how the Email Me button works. The next special button you can add is Hit Counter. This is an item that keeps track of how many visitors your site has received. You have probably seen something like this on other sites. So if you want to add a Hit Counter, just insert it on your page and then just drag it anywhere on your page you like and once your site has been published, the Counter will automatically keep track of the number of visitors to your page.
The final button we have here is Made on a Mac and by default, that's already been added and you can see that right down here at the bottom of the page and this serves no other purpose than to inform visitors that your site was proudly made on a Mac, so proudly in fact that you want to advertise this little bit of information. If the users click on that button, they will be taken to Apple's Mac website and that's really all there is to say about that. Now incidentally, if you do have all three buttons down here like I do, you might want to select them all by dragging a marquee through them and then choosing Arrange > Distribute Objects > Horizontally just to spacing out equally, just for a static purposes. But you can also drag them anywhere in the page you like.
So if you wanted your Hit Counter, like right there and your Email Me link here, you could do that as well. But be aware that you can only move or delete the three types of buttons, you can't resize them or change them in any way and you can only have one instance of each on a page. So it's not possible to have more than one Email Me button or to plaster your page with Made on a Mac buttons, no matter how much you might want to do so. Now there are other items that appear under Insert button that are currently grayed out and there's a more specialized buttons that can only be added to certain types of pages. We'll talk about those later.
To delete these buttons from my page, I can either uncheck them from the Insert menu or just select them and hit the Delete key on my keyboard. So I don't really think I need them on this particular page but on your own site, you can place these items on as many pages as you like.
