Video: Creating an account

You can browse the iTunes Store in its entirety to your heart's content at any time day or night. But in order to purchase anything from the store or even to download content that's being offered for free, you have to iTunes Store account. So, if you never create an account before or have never signed into the iTunes Store, I am going to show you how do that now. In the upper right-hand corner with account area where we currently see only the Sign In button which you will see, if you've never signed into the iTunes store before or if previously signed out of the store. I am going go ahead and click that. Now, if you have an Apple ID and you will have one if you've ever purchased anything online from the Apple Store or if you have a MobileMe account, you can make sure the Apple logo is selected in and sign in with that account information.

Creating an account

Apple is also partnered with AOL, so if you're an AOL subscriber you can enter your screen name and password to sign in to the iTunes Store here as well. If you neither of these things you can create new account by clicking Create New Account. And then just walk through the series of screens that come up. I click Continue, I will accept the terms and conditions, click Continue, and now I just have to create my user account information. Start by entering the email address you want to use for your iTunes account. Now the password you enter here is not your email password; this is password you come up with at this point that should be unique to the iTunes Store.

Notice it has to have at least 8 characters, one number, one letter in those spaces. I believe it also requires at least one letter to be capitalized as well, so I am going to make sure I have one of those. It's just going to ask you to come up with a question and answer you can easily remember in case you ever need to verify your identity to somebody helping out with the Store. So I will just type something like, What is my dog's name? Max Power, and then enter your birth date. If you don't want to receive any of these special offers or any other information, you can uncheck these options here and then click Continue.

Next, you are asked to enter your payment information. When you enter your credit card here nothing is going to be charged when you're signing up. This just helps to verify you as a real person and that the card you are using belongs to you. But purchases you make on the iTunes Store will be charged to the card you enter here. Now, alternately, you can use an iTunes gift card, so if someone has given you an iTunes gift card or if you just don't want to enter your credit card info, you can pick up a gift card at say Target or BestBuy or even many supermarkets carry them these days, and then you can enter that gift card info here instead.

Next, you will need to supply your billing address and click Continue to go to the next screen and now I see that my account is lynda.com.it10gmail.com and I will have receive an email at this email address to verify my account. In order to complete your set up, you are going to have to sign into this account. So I will click Done. So in this case, I go, check my email by going to Gmail.com. You, of course, will check the email with whichever service provider you are using and here's the email and just click the Verify it Now link to complete your sign up.

Then enter your email address and the password you came up with in the iTunes Sign up area. And I can see my email address has been verified. I will return to iTunes. It takes me back to the Store. So that's how to set up a new account and I'm now able to purchase items from the iTunes Store.
