Boosting an image to quickly fix saturation

Video: Boosting an image to quickly fix saturation

While I'm a big fan of dragging sliders, and twiddling endlessly, there are times that effects can be applied much more quickly inside of iPhoto. If you have an image that just feels a bit lacking in color, and contrast, instead of sitting over here and adjusting sliders, just jump on over to Effects, and clicking Boost will do a great job of applying color, and contrast at the same time. And every time you click, it will get more intense. Now, it's possible to overdo it, so you can use the arrow keys here to backwards through.

I think two did pretty well there. I'll click Contrast just a bit, and I think that looks a lot better. Now, you may combine this with a little bit of fading, and notice that boosting and fading can work together to give you a better balance. Let's take a look at another couple photos. Here's Boost, and that really does a nice job of helping that out. Then I jump over to the Adjust tab, and just lift those Shadows, so that they don't get lost. It's okay that it increased the overall color and a little bit of Contrast in there, and that did a nice job with Boost.

Let's come on over here to the last image, and using Boost really brings this image out. I like how the colors get lusher, and the contrast is so much better. Now, I think that looks pretty good, but I will use some of these other effects here to just cool that down. And notice, as you boost a color, you might want to cool the color temperature back down. In this case, it got a lot richer, but instead of it getting too red, I was able to cool that shot using the difference between the cooling and warming buttons, so that the color balance felt right. I like this here.

The color is nice and intense, but it doesn't look too blown out, or too orangeish.
