With iOS 5, Apple added some useful features to the iPad that are controlled via specific gestures. Let's take a look at them now. To begin, tap Settings and then tap General, and scroll down the screen to Multitasking Gestures. You'll see that that it's ON by default. Let's return to the Home screen and launch the Notes app. We'll tap on New Note to start typing, and we'll type a few characters.
Now, we're going to split the keyboard by taking two fingers placing them in the middle of the keyboard and pulling the keyboard apart. The keyboard continues to function in this view, plus the Spacebar splits in two, so that it's available on each half. To return to the full keyboard, just pinch the two halves together. Now the point of this, other than it looking incredibly cool, is that sometimes you have a lot of text on screen and you want to get the keyboard out of the way, so you can see better what you're doing. Split the keyboard and you can do exactly that.
While we're in Notes, let's bring up the Multitasking bar. Now, let's hide the keyboard by pressing the Hide Keyboard switch, and bring up the Multitasking bar. To do that just swipe up with four fingers, to hide it, swipe down with those same four fingers. If you like to switch to another app, just swipe four fingers to the left. The last most recent used app will appear. Continue swiping to the left with four fingers to march through other recently used apps. Finally, if you'd like to move to the Home screen without pressing the Home button, just pinch down on the display with four or five fingers, and there you have it. Four gestures that make navigating your iPad a little bit easier.
