Back with the Release of iOS 4.2, Apple introduced AirPrint, a feature that lets you wirelessly print from your iOS device, like your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad to any AirPrint-enabled printer. And that's the important part; the printer has to be specifically designed to support AirPrint. These printers are mostly Canon, HP, and Epson models and you can see which model support AirPrint by going to Apple's Support site. The really great thing is that there's no special setup required. Just follow the instructions that came with your printer for connecting it to your home or office wireless network. As long as your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad is on that same network and running iOS 4.2 or later, printing to your device is super easy.
For the most part, if it's a document you can view on your device, you'll probably be able to print it. AirPrint works with apps like your Safari web browser, Mail, Photos and any third-party apps in which the developer has included print capabilities. Depending on which application you're printing from, the button you'll use to print might vary. For example, if I want to print an email, I'd tap the same button I use to Reply to or Forward emails to get the Print button. If I wanted to print a photo from my Photo Library, I'll tap the Share button to get the Print button.
Other third-party apps might have other ways to print. Just hunt around a little and you're most likely to find it. So for example, I have this web page open right now and I want to print out a copy. I start by tapping the Share button and here I'll find Print. That takes me to Printer Options. I'll tap Select Printer. My iPhone takes a minute to search my network for AirPrint printers. In this case, it's found my HP D110 series printer. If you have more than one printer available, just select the one you want to print to. I only have the one, so I'll tap it.
That takes me back to the Printer Options page where the Print button is now available. Now, there really aren't there many other options here to speak of. Basically, I can just choose how many copies I want to print. I'll keep it as 1. Depending on which printer you're using though, you may see some additional options like the range of pages you want to print, whether you want to print double-sided and so on. I'll just tap Print and my iPhone starts wirelessly printing my web page. That's the AirPrint feature which works with any app that has a print function built in.
