Video: Playing and controlling video

The controls for playing videos on your iPhone and iPod touch are similar to the ones for playing music and audio files, but there are some differences and some things unique to video playback that you should be familiar with. So in this movie, we're looking at how to play videos. Your videos are accessible by tapping the Videos app. Videos are categorized into Movies, TV shows, and Music Videos. Generally, any movie you copy into iTunes to place on to your phone or iPod touch is considered a movie unless you go in and change the info to TV Show or Music Video. If you purchase a TV show or music video from the iTunes store, it will have the correct classification when you download it.

Playing and controlling video

Having your videos properly classified isn't a huge deal but it does make browsing through TV shows a lot easier, especially if you have several episodes of the same show. You can tap on show title to view all the episodes on a separate screen instead of having them all in your main video's page to scroll through. To play any video, just tap it. Videos only play in landscape mode but you can rotate your device to either side. While the video is playing, single-tap the screen to show and hide the controls. The controls will also disappear after a few seconds if you don't touch them but it's faster to just tap the screen if you know you're not going to use the controls.

We have the standard Play and Pause buttons with the Back and Forward buttons on either side. Holding down on either button skips backwards and forwards that increasing speeds the longer you hold them down. (video playing) Or tap the Back button to jump back to the beginning of the video. In the case of this video, it has chapter markers so tapping back takes me back to the previous chapters.

Volume can be controlled either by dragging the Volume slider left or right. (video playing) Or you can use the Volume buttons on the side of the phone. (video playing) At the top of the screen is the Progress bar with the elapse time to the left of the slider and the remaining time to right. We can drag in the Progress bar to go to a specific part of the video. Although it's not noted here, you have to same fine-tuning controls available for videos as you do for music playback.

To be more precise on which part of the movie you're dragging to, place your finger on the dot in the Progress bar and drag down away from the bar. The further away from the bar, the slower that I will move when you drag your finger horizontally. Some other buttons you might see depend on how the video you're watching was formatted. If the video includes subtitles or chapter markers, you'll see those buttons by the playback controls as well.

Here's the button for subtitles. You can see the subtitles there. (video playing) And here's the button for chapter markers. (video playing) Now unlike with playing music, you obviously can't keep playing a video while you're doing something else on the phone because the video takes up the entire screen.

So pressing the Home button or putting the screen to sleep stops the video and when you're done watching the video, tap Done to return to your library.
