Creating a shared photo stream

Previously, we looked at the feature called My Photo Stream, which is a feature of the free iCloud service that lets you keep your photos synced and share them among your iOS devices and your Mac or PC. Now with iCloud, you can also take advantage of a feature of the photo app called a Shared Photo Stream. A Shared Photo Stream is like a regular photo stream, except, as you might have guessed, you can share this photo stream with others. It's a quick and easy way to share an album of photos with someone directly from your iOS device. To turn this feature on, go to Settings>iCloud, make sure you're signed in, and then tap Photos. And here make sure Photo Sharing is turned on. Note that you don't have to have My Photo Stream turned on for this to work. But once you've turned on photo sharing, go back to your photos app And tap the Shared tab at the bottom of the screen. So, you can create multiple photo streams for whatever occasion or use you like. Maybe I want to create a stream of my vacation photos to Tokyo to share with certain friends. Now, since I haven't created any shared streams yet, I'll tap Create New Stream. First give your stream a name. And then tap Next, and then either start typing the names of the people you want to share the photo stream with. I have a couple of suggestions in here from previous photo streams I've created. You can select from there, or if I wanted to I can start typing to see names as well, or I can tap the + button to find a person in my contacts. I'll just select Scott and Greg and I'll tap Create. So now under Shared, I'm seeing Activity, and I can see I created the stream called Japan Trip. But I don't have any photos in this stream yet. Now, I could tap Add Photos or Videos from here, but another way to do it would be to go back to my Camera Roll, tap Select. And then select the pictures I want to add to my stream. Be aware that you can also share videos this way as well.

So with them selected, I'll tap the Share button and I'll select iCloud. If I want I can add a comment about these photos. At the bottom of this window, the Japan Trip photo stream I just created is selected. If I had more than one photo stream, I could select the one I want from here. Or I could even generate a new stream directly from here. But in this this case, I want to use this stream and I'll tap Post. So the people I sent the invitation to, will receive an email with a link to subscribe to this photo stream from their iOS devices. I'll tap Shared again, if I go back to Streams, I can see any stream I've created. There's Japan Trip and here's the photo stream I just created. Now I can switch to this People tab at any time to see who I've shared the stream with. If necessary I can select a person and down at the bottom here I can tap Remove Subscriber to remove their subscription to this stream. Or I could go back and tap Invite People to invite other friends to subscribe to the stream. I'll just Cancel that for now. So, once someone has subscribed to your photo stream, they'll automatically receive any photos you upload to the stream from that point on, which is nice so you don't have to constantly email individual photos to your friends and family. As long as they're subscribed, they can check for new photos whenever they want. They can even add comments to individual photos, which will show up on your devices. Now if you want you can enable Subscribers Can Post, if it's not already enabled, which means that people you share the stream with can add their own photos to the stream. So imagine if you are on vacation with a bunch of friends and each of you have lots of photos to share with each other. By starting a single shared photo stream and inviting everyone, each person can post his or her photos to the stream, so the others can view and download them. If you keep this Notifications switch on, you'll get an alert any time someone likes, comments, or posts their own photos to the stream. And even friends who don't have iOS devices can view your stream if you turn on public website. Doing so publishes your photos to the address that appears below, you can share this address with anyone you like and they'll be able to see your photostream.

Just tap Share Link, and chose a method to share the address with them. And just so you can see what it looks like, I've typed that address here into my browser and this is what the shared photostream looks like here. You can click on any of the photos to see them larger, or view them in full screen, and viewers can even download the photos from here, as well. Now, just be aware that they won't be able to post their own photos to the stream from the website, but they will be able, again, to view and download all the photos they want. So that's working with photo streams. For a free service, you get an incredibly useful set of features for sharing your photos across your devices and with your friends and family.
