Video: Creating sections

Let's add some additional structure and organization to our book by adding sections underneath of our chapters. Our chapters represent the various different tours that we offer at Explore California, and we have a variety of different packages for each of those tours. Let's begin by simply adding a section to this chapter. To do this, we simply go up to the Add Pages icon at the top, go down to Section, and click the Section button. A new section is added to our chapter.

Creating sections

Let's add some additional structure and organization to our book by adding sections underneath of our chapters. Our chapters represent the various different tours that we offer at Explore California, and we have a variety of different packages for each of those tours. Let's begin by simply adding a section to this chapter. To do this, we simply go up to the Add Pages icon at the top, go down to Section, and click the Section button. A new section is added to our chapter.

We can of course title the section, Big Sur Retreat, and then we can begin editing the text that's in here. However, before we get started doing that, there is a change that I want to make to our template. We'll notice that the template has a sidebar here with some Lorem Ipsum text and a numbered list. Each of our tours has a tour overview, but it's not an ordered list. So let's go ahead and edit the template so we can save ourselves some time in building this. To edit the template, come up here to the top of the Book sidebar, to the two little grabber handles, and pull down and you can expose out the various different templates.

Let's go ahead and scroll down until we get to the first section. When we select the section in the top part, now we're editing the actual template. So we can click inside of this first bit of text, double-click the title, and we'll type in "Overview." Then we'll click in the bottom and instead of having an ordered list, we'll come up to the Formatting toolbar and select None from the dropdown menu. Now, our text is just going to be plain text and the word "Overview" will already be written for us.

We can see that these changes have not been applied yet. We can then apply the changes by simply clicking the red button over in the top of the sidebar, and then grab the handles and close up the template section. Now when we click back in our section, we can see that we're in the correct Big Sur Retreat section and we're ready to add our text in. We can go ahead and shrink our window down a little bit, and again, I've included a text file in the exercise files called Section Text.txt, which you see onscreen, which has all the text that we're going to be using throughout this movie.

However, instead of copying and pasting all of the text over and over, let's use a slightly different technique that's a little bit faster, in my opinion. We'll come down to the bottom right- hand corner and we'll drag our window so that it's much narrower. Then we'll move our window over to the one side of our screen so we can see all of our text and we can still see our iBooks Author page. Next, we're going to select the first paragraph of text and then click and drag and drop that text directly into the overview.

We can then select the main body of the text, drag it, and drop it into our story. Then go back up to iBooks Author and add a new section. We'll go ahead and type in the title of this section: In the Steps of John Muir. And then once again, we'll drag and drop the text into the various sections. We'll add a new section, type in its title: The Death Valley Survivor's Trek.

Then we'll go ahead and drag and drop our text. And just two more. Add another section. This one is The Mt. Whitney Climbers Tour. Drag and drop our text. And add one final section: Channel Islands Excursion. And we'll select that text and drop it into place.

And now we've created a section for each of the packages within our Backpack California Tour.
