00:22We'll talk about how to find super deals, and how the various listing formats

00:29I'll demonstrate not only how to find an item that I want to buy, but I'll
00:34also review the listing to show you what's important, and what to look for on
00:38eBay's sellers pages.
00:40Finally, we'll talk about best practices for staying safe online and avoiding
00:44any possible pitfalls or scams that you may run into across the Internet.

1. Getting Started
Creating an eBay account
00:00In order to buy on the eBay web site, you'll need an account so that you can be
00:04identified by other users and eBay staff.
00:07This account will permit you to both buy and sell.
00:11A seller's account does require more steps, but to start buying it's fast and
00:15easy to become a member of the eBay community.
00:18In this movie, we'll focus on opening an eBay account, so that you'll be allowed
00:22to place bids on auction-style listings and use the Buy It Now feature of the
00:26web site, as well as participate in other parts of the eBay site--such as posting
00:31to the various eBay communities.
00:33From the ebay.com homepage, click on the register link here by the eBay logo.
00:39In the individual registration page, you'll see that you can register as an individual,
00:43but you also have the option, if you want to, to register as a company.
00:48Go ahead and fill in all the information.
00:50So first, you fill in your name, and then your address, and then your
01:03telephone number. Then you'll need to fill in your e-mail address. Then you
01:14need to re-enter it.
01:18Select the user ID that you'll use on eBay.
01:20This user ID is how everyone on the site will identify you, and it's your
01:24legitimate alias for eBay trading.
01:27Use an ID that fits your personality, such as for me I might use
01:31chrislovescollectibles.
01:33Keep in mind that there are millions of eBay users, and your preferred name
01:37may be already taken.
01:38But you can always add some additional information to the name to get that name
01:41you want, such as chrislovescollectibles2010.
01:50So I entered in chrislovescollectibles2010, and eBay tells me this ID is
01:54available for me to use.
01:56Go ahead and enter a password.
01:59It's important to select a password that is hard to guess but it is easy for
02:03you personally to remember.
02:05Then go ahead and re-enter your password.
02:09In this next section, you'll need to select a secret question.
02:12Pick a security question and answer to assist you in recovering your account
02:16information in case you lose your password, or if eBay needs to identify you when
02:21you're calling customer support.
02:26Then go ahead and enter your date of birth.
02:28Don't be shy about it.
02:29eBay needs to confirm that you are at least 18 years of age, and this also
02:33helps ensure that everyone on the eBay community is a real person and not an Internet scammer.
02:39This makes the entire eBay marketplace a much better and safer
02:42trading environment.
02:44Trading on eBay is safe, and you can trust this company.
02:53Next, you want to enter the verification code, which is the random number on the
02:56form, to prevent automated computers from registering on the eBay site.
03:03Go ahead and take a moment to accept and read the user agreement and privacy
03:07policy, and then click Continue.
03:09You will then receive a confirmation e-mail of your registration.
03:13So you go to your Inbox, and you check to see the e-mail you've received from eBay.
03:17In this e-mail, you'll see a button that says Activate Now.
03:21You can go ahead and click on Activate Now, and that will activate your
03:24registration on the eBay site.
03:27It's really that simple.
03:29You'll also see a comment here at the bottom that suggests that you sign up
03:32for PayPal, which is the payment service on the eBay site, the most commonly used one.
03:37You'll see this option, but hang on for a second.
03:38We'll cover doing that in the later movie.
03:41eBay might limit buying activity for new members or when the activity of
03:45a member is unusual.
03:47As your feedback rating on eBay improves, limits can be avoided.
03:51You can also avoid bidding and buying limitations by registering for a PayPal
03:55account, or optionally placing a credit card or a debit card on file, or becoming
03:59an ID-verified member of the eBay community.
04:02Any bids over $15,000 do require a valid credit or debit card, or ID
04:07verification of your account to help ensure that members making large purchases
04:12are of legal age and prepared to follow through with the transaction.
04:16We're all done with basic registration.
04:18As a registered user on eBay, you can start making purchases right away.
04:22It's important to learn about the eBay online marketplace,
04:25so before you do anything or bid on anything, I'd like to give you a full
04:28education about this process of finding deals and paying for them.

Creating a PayPal account
00:00Although PayPal is a company that offers many payment services, the most common
00:04use is to send and receive money in connection with an eBay transaction.
00:08PayPal users can send and receive money for virtually anything to anyone, anywhere.
00:14But we'll be setting up our PayPal account to use with our eBay user ID and
00:18our eBay purchases.
00:20Don't get too confused by all the tons of options on the site;
00:23you can explore those later on after you become more familiar with all of
00:26PayPal's various uses.
00:28To register, you would go to PayPal, and you would want to make sure that you
00:32see this little padlock here.
00:33This means you are on a secure web site.
00:34So when you are entering personal information, you see this secure site there.
00:38Then you want to go down to where it says New to PayPal, and click on the Sign up option.
00:45You'll see some different options here, and be sure to put your country or region in.
00:49We're in the United States, so that's what I'm going to put there.
00:51You can select your language.
00:53They give you some choices, and then you'll some different options here
00:56for types of accounts.
00:58If you are already a PayPal member, you can always use this option to upgrade
01:01your account to one of the other types of accounts.
01:04Or, you can go ahead and register for a basic Personal account if you're just
01:08going to be shopping online.
01:10A Premier or a Business account is required if you're an eBay seller, and it's
01:14recommended if you're going to be selling items on your own web site or using a
01:18shopping cart system to receive payments from other people.
01:21But since we're just buying, we'll keep it simple, and we'll just set up a
01:24Personal account, and we'll go ahead and click Get Started.
01:27Before we register, I did want to explain to you that sending money for a user
01:31who purchases something on eBay is free.
01:34You just pay for the purchase.
01:35You don't have any extra fees from PayPal.
01:37There is no extra cost.
01:39The sellers, or the people that are receiving the money, pay a small fee for
01:42receiving the funds through PayPal.
01:44But the person making the purchase just pays for the item that they bought.
01:47So we'll click Get Started.
01:49We'll need to fill in the fields that are provided,
01:51so I'm going to go ahead, and I'll start filling in my information.
01:54First, the e-mail address.
01:55Then I need to choose a password.
02:01Be sure to enter a password that's hard to guess but is very easy for you to remember.
02:05Then go ahead and re-enter your password.
02:10Now PayPal said my password was okay.
02:12But I think it's a good enough password.
02:14If you want to enter a more complicated password, you can sure do that,
02:16but you might want to write it down somewhere.
02:18Then enter your name, and you need to enter a real mailing address.
02:32Then you need to enter a phone number.
02:37PayPal requires that you put real information here,
02:40so be sure you're filling this in accurately.
02:42In case you need to call later to customer support and talk to an agent, it's
02:45important that the information be accurate.
02:47Go ahead and take a moment to read over the user agreement and privacy policy
02:53and then click Agree and Create Account.
02:56It's really that simple to set up a PayPal account.
02:59At this point, you'll be asked how you would like to pay for your purchases, and
03:02you have some choices here.
03:04You can fund your PayPal account in a variety of different ways.
03:08Let's go ahead and review, for a minute, the different ways you can add money
03:11to your PayPal account or associate payments with your purchases on eBay or other web sites.
03:17Funding your PayPal account can be done with a bank account.
03:20So you can have a regular checking account if you want to.
03:22This is the little less common.
03:23Most people don't do that.
03:25Most people who are selling add a bank account, because they need to receive the
03:28money and then deposit it into their bank account. Or you can add funds using
03:32a debit or credit card, or you can make real -time purchases on web sites such as eBay, and
03:37when you pay for them, the money will be deducted from your debit, or your
03:40credit card in real time.
03:42You can also get funds from other people, like if somebody wants to provide you
03:46with money through MoneyPak, or if you want to go down to a retail store and
03:50pick up a MoneyPak, you can use cash instead of a credit card to go ahead and
03:54get a MoneyPak card.
03:56Major retailers carry MoneyPak, and there is a ton of them,
03:59thousands and thousands of companies that carry these MoneyPak cards that you can purchase.
04:04There is a nominal, little fee that you have to pay when you buy the MoneyPak
04:08in addition to the actual funds that you'll be using to pay for your items on PayPal.
04:12You can also pay for items using money you've received from other PayPal members.
04:16Anybody that sends money to your PayPal address, the money will then go
04:20into your account, and then you can turn around and spend those funds for online purchases.
04:25So I've explained the different ways to add funds and pay for items with PayPal,
04:29but I'm going to go ahead and a credit card to my PayPal account.
04:33You can pay right away, and you can pay without exposing your card number to merchants.
04:37It's very secure.
04:38You don't have to keep typing your credit card information.
04:41This is the most common way to pay for items on your PayPal account.
04:44So I'm going to enter in the information on my credit card,
04:50then the expiration date, and then the code.
04:54Then I'm going to go ahead and enter in my billing address.
05:04Once you've finished entering in all the information, you can go ahead and save
05:08the billing address, and then you click Continue.
05:13You also have the option now to add a bank account if you want. This is optional.
05:17I'm going to go back over to my inbox, and I'm going to double-check for
05:22an e-mail from PayPal.
05:23I can see that PayPal sent me an e-mail here confirming that I've set up my
05:27account and added a credit card and a billing address.
05:31Now, you'll see that PayPal is asking you if you want to add a bank account.
05:35Generally, because it costs less for PayPal to process transactions through a
05:39bank account than it does for a credit card,
05:41they're going to encourage you to go ahead and add a bank account at this point.
05:45It's not mandatory to do that right now.
05:47You can go ahead and click on the PayPal logo, and you can go directly to your
05:50PayPal account and start using it.
05:52Now that you have a PayPal account set up, you're ready to buy on eBay, shop
05:56online at any Internet web site that accepts PayPal, and you can also send and
06:00receive money for private and public debts.

Establishing your identity with ID Verify
00:00The ID Verify service on eBay uses Equifax, which is an established and
00:04respected company, to confirm your identity by checking your contact information
00:09against consumer and business databases.
00:12The information you provide is held strictly confidential, and it's only used
00:16for verification purposes.
00:18To find ID Verify information, go to the homepage on eBay and click on the Help link.
00:23The fastest and easiest way to find the ID Verify option is simply to type in "ID
00:28Verify" in the Help Search box.
00:32Select the Using ID Verify option at the top of the search results.
00:37Take a moment to read over the benefits of using ID Verify.

01:27The cost is $5.00 billed to your eBay account.
01:30Once you ID-verify, bear in mind you're not allowed to change any contact
01:34information for 30 days.
01:36When you're ready, click on the Sign Up Now button.
01:39Then click I Agree.
01:40You'll need to sign in with your eBay user ID and password.
01:49Take a moment to verify your full contact Information.
01:52You'll notice that your contact info is already there, including your full name
01:56and address, and your telephone number, and your date of birth.
02:02Although your date of birth is already there, you do need to enter your driver's
02:05license state and driver's license number.
02:10Then click Continue.
02:11You'll go to a confirmation page. Review your information carefully and then
02:16click Continue again.
02:18eBay has taken a moment to go to Equifax and pull some personal information that
02:22only you will know about.
02:24You'll need to take the time to review the questions here and make sure you
02:28answer them correctly in order to become an ID-verified member.
02:31You'll notice that there is a series of questions that only you would be able to answer.
02:36An example question is: "Your credit file indicates you may have a mortgage loan,
02:39opened in or around July 2005.
02:41Who is the credit provider for this account?"
02:44Answer the rest of the questions and then click Continue.
02:50Once you've successfully ID-verified your eBay account, an ID Verify logo will
02:55always appear next to your eBay user ID on the eBay site.
02:58You'll now be able to list an item for sell without having to immediately place
03:02a credit card or a checking account on file, and you can also open an eBay
03:06store, and receive all the additional benefits I mentioned earlier for being an
03:11ID-verified eBay member.

2. Navigating eBay's Help, Resources, and Community
Reaching out to customer support
00:00Getting help from Internet web sites can be a daunting task for some people.
00:04There is often a reason it's hard to reach companies, because providing customers
00:08support costs money, and most companies try and keep that information well
00:12hidden to avoid contact by phone.
00:15eBay and PayPal do offer several methods of support, and you will want to
00:19discover the best ways to get the help that you need, when you need it.
00:22For eBay, be sure you're signed in to the web site.
00:26Some resources are only available when you're actually signed in to the site.
00:29On the homepage, click on the Contact us link.
00:33If you're having a concern about a particular topic, then you can that
00:37topic into the Ask box.
00:39eBay usually won't display a way to contact them until you've taken a moment to
00:43identify the topic for which you need help.
00:45If you get stuck and don't quite know what to say in the Ask box, then you can
00:49click on the See more topics link right here.
00:52I'm going to select item under the Bidding & buying section right here, and then
00:58I'm going to select Can I return an item?
01:01You'll notice that over here on the right-hand side that eBay presents an option
01:04to chat with their customer support team.
01:07Just so you know, eBay's support telephone number is 866-322-9105,
01:13just in case you want to cut to the chase and just call them.
01:16eBay support is available 24 hours a day, any day of the week, all year long.
01:21Don't expect a miracle when you call.
01:23eBay is generally there to answer your most common technical questions,
01:26but in terms of strategy and buying theory, their agents are more likely to be
01:31able to help you with the most general of questions, and those that are more
01:35technically oriented.
01:36If you run into any trouble on eBay, or you have issues with a transaction,
01:40that's also why eBay's support is there.
01:43You can call or you can chat online with an agent and get the resolution that you need.
01:47For help with PayPal, go to the PayPal web site.
01:50You would click on the Help link right here.
01:53As with eBay, PayPal offers a myriad of self-help links to help answer the
01:57most common questions.
01:59If you want to try her out, Sarah is an automated help assistant right here.
02:03She can also assist you as well, and you can type a question in the chat box
02:06with Sarah such as, "How do I pay for an eBay auction?"
02:09Sarah will then give you the most common answer for the question that
02:15you've presented to her.
02:17So these handy answers are great, but I do like to actually talk to a real
02:20person. And even though PayPal will make a concerted effort to get you
02:24self-help, you can also speak to an agent or you can e-mail them.
02:27So the way you would do that is you would scroll down to the bottom of the page
02:31and click on Contact us link right here.
02:33You will notice that PayPal makes a concerted effort to provide you with all the
02:38resources to answer your questions,
02:40but you can contact them directly either by calling them or e-mailing them.
02:44I'm going to go ahead and click on the Email Us option.
02:48You'll need to sign in, and then you'll need to choose a topic to summarize your concern.
02:55So in this case, I'm going to go ahead and ask a question about sending and
02:57receiving money and making an auction payment.
03:00Then I'm going to put a real quick summary here to summarize why I am contacting PayPal.
03:09PayPal will then present you with some suggested topics that might be able to
03:13help you, right here in the help system. Or you can e-mail them directly by
03:17selecting these choices right here.
03:19They'll ask you which web site you are using.
03:21In this case, I'm using eBay.
03:23Then they ask you for some optional questions here as well, plus the summary of
03:26the question that you put in earlier.
03:28Then you can e-mail PayPal's customer support team by typing in your question here.
03:36Then you click Continue.
03:39Then someone from PayPal will contact you by e-mail within the period of time
03:43specified on their web site.
03:44If you'd rather talk to someone on the telephone, you can go back to the Help,
03:47Contact us page, and you can use the Call option.
03:51So if I go back to Help, then I go to Contact us, then I can click Call Us, then
04:01I can click Call PayPal Customer Service.
04:04The telephone number will be presented to you right here on this page, along with
04:07the call-in pin that you use when you're making the phone call.
04:10We're just covering the most basic ways to get support for eBay and PayPal in this movie.
04:15But there are lots of help and support resources that you'll discover as you use
04:19these sites more frequently.

Exploring eBay's educational resources
00:00You can never have too much education, but it is possible to get
00:04analysis paralysis.
00:05I certainly do not want the latter for you, but if you're the type of person who
00:09really likes to dive into the driver's manual before you take a car for a spin,
00:14then let's cover some of the plethora of wonderful eBay education resources that
00:18will take you well beyond just this lynda.com class.
00:22It's helpful to know where to find eBay education when you need it.
00:26The fastest way to get the eBay Education Center is to type it in directly here
00:30at the top URL: eBay.com/education.
00:34You'll be taken to eBay's University Learning Center.
00:37On this page, you'll find some helpful links for buyers
00:40if you are new to eBay, or if you want to learn how to buy on the eBay site.
00:43There is also resources for sellers
00:45if you ever want to sell items on eBay, but we'll focus on how to buy.
00:48We'll be taken to this page here, and we learn the buying basics and how to buy on eBay,
00:53the top questions that eBay buyers typically ask, how to contact eBay as well,
00:58so right here on the right-hand side.
01:00You can also go to the Answer Center and post questions to eBay community
01:03members, and there are all kinds of great resources here, and shortcuts that
01:07you can find as well.
01:08If you want to learn in person and you like to actually get a class, then you go
01:12back to the eBay education page, and you can find classes in your local area,
01:16classes that are provided by other instructors--people that are experts on eBay--
01:20and you can click on this link right here for classroom instruction.
01:24Then if you are interested in finding a class in your neighborhood, you would go
01:27ahead and go to one of the classes that are offered.
01:30You can click on Find a class now.
01:32You can put in your ZIP code over here, and then you can select from a list of
01:36instructors or a list of scheduled group classes in your area.
01:41So that's how you find an education specialist, an expert who's trained by eBay
01:45to help with your eBay buying or your eBay selling.
01:48So let's go back to the eBay homepage and take a look at some other resources for you.
01:53If you go down to the bottom of the page and you click on the site map,
01:57you'll then be able to find more information about registering and confirming
02:01your registration, but there is also a lot of resources on the eBay site map for buyers.
02:06So all these buying resources are on the page, and you can also click on these
02:10links and learn a lot more about the different things that buyers can do, such
02:13as retracting bids, buying internationally, information about eBay's buyer
02:17protection, or any of the other links that you see here. And you can click here
02:21to see all the buying resources that are available on the eBay site.

00:13I would like to point out to you how to get to the eBay security center.
00:16Although you can find the security centre from the eBay site map, the easiest
00:20way to get there is going to eBay.com/securitycenter.

00:30There is a whole bunch of links on the left- hand side for the topic that might concern you.
00:34For example, if you receive an e-mail that looks like it might not be
00:38legitimate--we call those spoof or fake e-mails--
00:40one of the most common problems online, people receive e-mail, and it's not from
00:43an actual eBay member, or it's not related to an eBay transaction.
00:47You can go ahead and report that information to eBay and find out whether or not
00:51it's a real e-mail from eBay or maybe a spoof e-mail or fake e-mail trying to
00:55steal your password.

01:00There is a whole lot of marketplace safety tips and tricks, and ways that

01:08parts, or maybe you are somebody who sells business in industrial equipment, you
01:12can drill down into these discussion boards, and you can share ideas, ask
01:17questions, and you can join community threads about a specific topic. Or you can
01:21start your own discussions, as well.

3. Understanding Listing Formats
Browsing auction-style listings
00:00It can be really exciting to attend a live auction, and eBay has capitalized on
00:05this thrill by offering auction-style listings as a way to buy merchandise.
00:09Bidding can be tons of fun.
00:11You can acquire incredible bargains, and it's interesting to explore merchandise
00:15from sellers across the world online.
00:17We'll take some time to review how auction-style listings work, on eBay and how
00:21you can best take advantage of competitive bidding to find scarce items or get
00:25super deals on everyday products.
00:28You're going to want to search for items. Of course, that's how you find things on eBay.
00:31You find things by typing in search keywords, like I would say "antique
00:35lamp"; that's an example.
00:37Then you'll see a list of items for sale, and you'll notice that those items are
00:41either auctions or Buy it Now.
00:42Now, I'm going to go ahead and scroll through and look for some auctions.
00:45If something catches you eye, you might want to click on it. Oh, this catches
00:49my eye; I like sconces.
00:50I'm going to click on this one right here.
00:52Then you can see on the listing page for an auction-style listing all the
00:56different facets of the listing, like pictures--you have a picture here, which you
01:00can enlarge and look at.
01:02You have the title of the item, how much time is left, and of course it's
01:05antique, so it's used.
01:07You can see the bidding information here, who is bidding, by clicking on that. You can see that.
01:13Then you can go through and see additional things, like how much the current
01:15bid is and the maximum bid you have to enter, shipping information, who the
01:20seller is, their feedback score, the location of the item
01:23you can see here as well.
01:25If you page-down, you can see additional information about the item: Very
01:29unusual two lamp solid brass beautiful sconces, wired and working, excellent for its age.
01:35The information that you learn about the item through its description is
01:38provided by the actual seller, and you will be going through and reading tons of
01:42different descriptions and titles and things that are unique to each individual
01:46seller. But let's look at the most important and general things that are
01:51important to you about a listing. And in reviewing that items listing page and
01:55making a decision whether or not you want to place a bid, note some specific
01:59things that might be very important to you.
02:01First one is methods of payment.
02:03What methods of payment does the seller accept?
02:06Are those methods secure?
02:07Are you comfortable sending those methods of payment?
02:10If they tell you to put cash in an envelope and mail it out, that may not make
02:13you very comfortable. But PayPal might be a more comfortable way to pay, and most
02:17people pay that way.
02:18Then looking at the seller's feedback profile.
02:20Do they have 99.5% feedback?
02:23That's really, really good.
02:24Or do they have really low feedback, like 50%? And maybe their buyers aren't
02:29really happy with their service.
02:31Look at the end date of the item.
02:32If you need a right away, and it ends in two or three days, maybe you can't wait
02:36that long; maybe you need it sooner.
02:38You can also see how many other bidders are currently involved.
02:41If there is a lot of competition, you may not be successful in winning that item.
02:44There may be too much competition.
02:46Also, look at the current amount of the high bid.
02:49If the high bid is so high that you're not really willing to pay it, don't get
02:52emotionally involved.
02:53You might want to move along and look in another listing.
02:56Look at any nuances on the listing description that might be relevant to you,
02:59including what might be included or excluded from what you're buying.
03:03Be sure to ask about that if you're not sure.
03:06Things like accessories, if you buy electronics item, you want to make sure that
03:09you're getting the battery or the strap or the accessories.
03:12Just make sure you're asking questions or reading carefully in the description.
03:16It's important to know the returns policy of the seller as well.
03:18If it's a no returns allowed or if you have a 30-day returns policy.
03:22What is the specific returns policy for that seller?
03:26Auction-style listings work with a thing called bid increments and automatic
03:29bidding, which will be talking about in more detail in a later movie. But the
03:33basic idea is that eBay allows people to bid on items, but they have to bid a
03:38minimum extra amount just to avoid people adding an extra 10 cents to their bid
03:42or getting into a silly penny bidding war and things like that.
03:46Bids are binding contracts, and if you're the high bidder, you're obligated to
03:49complete the transaction with the seller.
03:51Bids may be retracted in some cases, and it depends on how much time is left
03:55before the end of the listing.
03:57It's important to avoid super-charged emotions when bidding.
04:00It may be tempting to get upset about being outbid, but keep a cool head and bid
04:04only what you feel an item is really worth, not just so you can become the high
04:08bidder, but so you get something at a good deal.
04:11Many eBay buyers use sniping software to bid at the last remaining seconds
04:15before the end of an auction.
04:16eBay's auction- style listing format allows for a fun competitive
04:21bidding environment.
04:22You get to compete with other buyers on items, and the highest bid wins.
04:26The nice thing is that many sellers start items at very low prices, and if there
04:30isn't a lot of competition for a particular listing, you can win big in terms of
04:35cost savings when using the eBay auction-style format.

Browsing fixed-price listings
00:00We have taken a look at the auction-style listings, and now I want to show you a
00:03different type of listing called a Buy It Now.
00:06A fixed-price listing, also known as Buy It Now listings, are also available on
00:11the eBay site, so let's take a look at what those will look like when you are
00:14searching on the eBay site.
00:16So if I am searching for something like an antique table lamp, and I search for
00:21that, you'll see that there are types of formats.
00:23Some items have a thing called a bid section.
00:26That's an auction-style listing.
00:27You'll also have listing that say Buy It Now on them, and that's where you can
00:31purchase the item at a fixed price.
00:33If we scroll down even further, you'll see that some Buy It Now listings have
00:36a thing called Best Offer underneath them. And then you also have listings
00:40where you can either bid on the item, or you can see that there is a Buy It
00:44Now feature as well.
00:45So let's take a look at these individual listings.
00:48First of all I am going to open up this listing, and we will see that we can
00:51purchase this lamp at $165, or there is an option.
00:55This is something the seller has to put on there.
00:57It's not something that's always on a Buy It Now listing.
01:00The seller can now allow you to negotiate and make an offer lower than the price
01:04of the current listing.
01:05Just like with the auction-style listings, you will see the various aspects of a listing page.
01:10You'll see photos,
01:11you'll see terms and conditions and shipping, descriptions and returns policies.
01:15But you'll have a different way of purchasing.
01:18Let's go ahead and scroll through and take a look at some other types of formats.
01:21You have an auction-style listing with a Buy It Now option.
01:24I am going to look at this table lamp here, and you can see that you have got
01:27a starting bid of $275, or you can just purchase the item and buy it right away for $325;
01:34that's a hybrid-type listing.
01:36So let's talk a little bit more about all the details of fixed-price listings.
01:42First of all, it's important to know that there is no biding required.
01:45You can purchase a fixed-price listing.
01:46It's called Buy It Now.
01:47You purchase it, and you are done.
01:49You own the item. You have a contract with the seller to purchase it.
01:52The best offer feature is the negotiation process.
01:55It's kind of the opposite of an auction.
01:56You can make offers lower than the current price, and you can go back and forth
02:00and negotiate with the seller.
02:02It's possible to make up to three offers on an item.
02:05Some categories and merchandise don't allow three offers;
02:08they allow different number of offers depending on the category. But most of
02:11them offer up to three offers back and forth, so you can negotiate back and forth.
02:15If you are in a negotiation on a best offer, there is a time limit. And if the
02:19seller does not accept your offer within 48 hours, the offer that you have made
02:23is no longer valid; it expires.
02:25If your offer is accepted, you have a deal, and you are required to complete the
02:28transaction with the seller.
02:30Fixed-price listings can also be multiple items. So if the seller has more than
02:34one available, you might see that there are multiples on the listing, and you can
02:38purchase more than one.
02:39On a fixed-price listing, you can also see a different style, which we have
02:43shown, which is an auction with a fixed-price option called Buy It Now. And in
02:47that case, the seller has given you a hybrid, a little bit of flexibility in
02:51either taking your chances at biding-- in which case if there is no reserve,
02:55you place the bid, the Buy It Now goes away, and it's no longer a feature on the auction.
02:59You can then keep biding with other bidders. But if you place the bid for a Buy It
03:03Now and you purchase that item, then you are the owner of the item and have an
03:07agreement with the seller.
03:08There is no waiting when you have an auction with the Buy It Now. When you place
03:12that purchase, it's done. When you actually purchase an item using the bid
03:16process and the Buy It Now goes away, you cant go back and then make the offer
03:19for the higher price, fixed price. You are done.
03:21It's a become a biding or an auction at that point.
03:24Fixed-price listings on eBay offer you a great way to get what you want quickly
03:28without waiting on an auction to end.
03:30If you have little time, or you want something immediately, the fixed-price
03:35format on eBay offers you instant gratification.
03:38Fixed price also assures you that you'll get the item at the price want without
03:42the guesswork of possibly being outbid.

01:06Also, when you are searching on the main eBay site and you are looking for

02:03You'll see listings. It looks just like the regular eBay site, with some additional information on there.
02:08There are classified ads, as well as auctions and Buy It Now listings; all of
02:12those are available on eBay Motors. And just like on the core eBay site, you have
02:16the ability to filter over here on the left side, or customize the search and the
02:21view, and you can see the different information about the vehicle. But you also
02:24have specifications about the vehicle, and also you can do price research as
02:28well. And you can see other people's reviews of the vehicles as well and see how
02:32popular the car has been. Plus Kelley Blue Book provides information on price
02:36research that you might be interested in, too.
02:39But if you are looking for a part--
02:40let's go back to Parts and Accessories, and we'll do the same thing.
02:44We put in a specific make and a model, and we will go ahead and look for a specific part.
02:49I am looking for something like perhaps 1996 throttle body for this car.
02:55You put in the keywords, and you click Search. Now it's possible to browse, but I
02:59wanted to look for a specific make and model, and you'll find that there are
03:03new after-market parts.
03:04There is also OVM parts as well, so there is all different kinds of parts
03:08available: used and brand new.
03:10Oftentimes, after-market parts are sold alongside of OVM used parts, and you

03:18buying formats here as well.

00:11To get to eBay classifieds, you would click over here on the eBay homepage, on
00:15this link called Classifieds.
00:17You'll be then taken to the eBay Classifieds landing page, and just like it

00:31and things like that. You'll see cars and vehicles and vehicle parts for sales. Jobs.

00:46the bottom of the page, such as other city links and other cities and states
00:51that might also be of interest to you if you want to tool around in classified ads in other towns.
00:55There are also links at the bottom of the page to other parts of eBay and eBay's
00:59affiliated web sites as well.
01:01So if you are interested in looking at a classified ad, you can type in a search
01:04here, and you can type in what you are looking for.
01:06You can pick a category of merchandise or an event or something that you
01:10might be interested in.
01:11You can also narrow your search down to a community within your area, or you can
01:15punch in a ZIP code.
01:16So if I punch in my local ZIP code-- let's say 91505 is my ZIP code--I would be
01:21able to see classified just in my local area.
01:24I am going to go ahead and show you a sample classified ad that I have up here
01:27on the screen, and this is a vintage leather metal men's cowboy belt.
01:31It has a metal buckle, and you can see that on the ad itself you have the
01:34ability to contact to the person who is offering the item for sale.

01:54There is all kinds of services for sharing and social networking. And then you
01:58have the ability to print out the classified ad using the Print option as well.
02:02With eBay Classifieds, you can find items for sale in very much the same way
02:06that you find them on eBay's primary web site; however, you'll be dealing
02:10directly with the seller--
02:11you won't be bidding on items.
02:13It would be just as if you read a local newspaper classified, and then you can
02:16reach out directly to the seller using e-mail or a contact phone number.
02:21This is great way to find items if you are interested in purchasing in
02:24your local community.

00:36rentals, plus other real estate as well.
00:38I'm going to show you some actual listing, so let's go take a look at residential
00:42real estate for a minute.
00:44As we scroll through, we can see that there is a lot of listings here in
00:47different states, and you can see pictures of those listings, and you can
00:52see descriptions and prices. And there is different formats: Buy It Now and
00:55auction-style listings.
00:56You can see some properties have lot of bids on them.
00:59Let's go ahead and take a look over here at one of the actual listings.
01:03We can see that is Illinois property that's a fixer upper.
01:06And you can see all the same features that you would see on an eBay auction-
01:10style listing with the Buy It Now.
01:12You also can see the actual location of the property. This is kind of a
01:16misnomer, because even though it's says local pick-up, you obviously wouldn't
01:20be picking the property up.
01:21You would be purchasing it and getting a deed for it.
01:24You go through the terms and conditions of the property just like you would a
01:27regular eBay listing. There is some specific information about the real estate
01:31that you'd want to read.
01:32You definitely, with real estate, since there is lot of money involved, you want
01:35to really go through and carefully read all the terms and conditions.
01:39Something else to think about is you might consider asking the seller if
01:43they would agree to a professional inspection of the property before you place your bid.
01:47Would they let you get a key and go look at the property physically or hire
01:50your own agent or your own broker or real estate agent to go out and take a
01:54look at it as well.
01:56Every single listing on eBay is a handcrafted moment, so you want to take the
02:00time to look at the extra terms and conditions that this seller has put on the property.
02:04You can see that this is a foreclosure, and the seller has never actually
02:07looked at the property.
02:08It's being sold as-is, so they're obviously selling a property on a foreclosure
02:12that they haven't seen.
02:13They don't take any personal checks.
02:15There is $500 deposit that's due within one day of being the high bidder,
02:19and then full payment's due within 72 hours. The deed is given at the time of settlement.
02:24You can see some additional costs that the seller is charging.
02:27They have closing costs, which are very important because these are extra fees
02:31that will be added to your high bid.
02:33So even though you're the winning bidder at a certain price, you'll also be
02:36charged some additional costs, which you can see have been added here.
02:40And this is the kicker: you really want to look carefully because you can see
02:44that this seller is going to charge you a buyer's premium.
02:47You can add on an additional 5% to your final bid to the cost of this listing.
02:54And all the additional terms and conditions of payment are listed there as well.
02:58So some sellers may ask for a deposit by PayPal, or the entire payment by PayPal.
03:03For smaller amounts that are in your own comfort zone, PayPal would be okay;
03:07that's a good way to pay.
03:08For a $500,000 house, you would definitely want to ask the seller in advance of bidding
03:14if an Escrow company or an attorney would be an agreeable way for you to handle
03:18the paperwork and the money.
03:20You are definitely going to want to think about using an intermediary before you
03:23purchase real estate.
03:24So this is something to think about. Be a little bit more cautious when
03:27you're making purchases.
03:29With the eBay real estate listings, you have the standard formats that you would
03:32have on any other eBay listing. You have auction-style listings also
03:35auction-style with Buy It Now features.
03:38There is Make Offer as well, and you have fixed-price listings where you can
03:41just make a purchase.
03:42There is also classified ads where you can contact the seller directly and ask
03:46them to contact you back.
03:47You should remember that with any real property transaction it's important to
03:51think about and understand the legal ramifications of purchasing the property,
03:56and the normal and customary rules in each state that apply to those purchases.
04:00You can protect yourself using a property intermediary for the transaction
04:04where it's warranted.
04:05In some states, you might think of a using an attorney or an Escrow agent, or
04:09you can even use a title company or similar entity to help with the handling of
04:13money and transferring the title.
04:15This involves some legal paperwork--a deed, for example--but you should be sure
04:19to get a proper legal consultation from a professional if you're not familiar
04:23with real estate transactions.
04:25And in many cases, an adequate real estate professional, such as a title company
04:29or a state-licensed Escrow agent, would be more than adequate for handling the
04:34deed of your purchase of the property.

4. Finding Deals
Doing basic searches
00:00eBay's search engine works similarly to other search engines you may have used.
00:04In this movie, we'll go over how to search using basic keywords.
00:08Using eBay's search, you can find whatever items your heart may desire.
00:13It's important to use keywords when searching on eBay, and not grammatically correct phrases.
00:17You're searching for specific keywords that appear in the titles on the listings
00:21that are listed on eBay by the seller.
00:23We're going to conduct a basic search from the eBay homepage.
00:26We're going to go ahead and do that by typing in some keywords.
00:30First, I'm going to type in the words "antique lamp".
00:33Then I'm going to go ahead and click Search.
00:36I'm presented with a list of search results here, and it's important for you to
00:40understand how this search came about.
00:42So I'm going to take a little bit of a break and talk to you about best match.
00:46We'll discuss that.
00:47Best match works like this.
00:49A listing accrues points automatically as it gets closer to the time the auction ends.
00:55A listing also loses points in the search if the seller has a 3.9 or lower
01:00rating for a thing called Detailed Seller Rating for shipping and handling
01:04charges in their feedback profile.
01:07This Detailed Seller Rating is one of their feedback components, and eBay ranks
01:11their item in the search based on this one component.
01:15A listing also gains or loses points depending on the seller's shipping method,
01:19and shipping and handling fees.
01:21A listing gains points if the seller can identify and include certain keywords
01:25in their title, but unfortunately eBay doesn't explain what that is.
01:28So it's a little bit of mystery. But it's important to know that there is a
01:31thing called best match that initially presents a list of search results to you
01:35that eBay thinks will be relevant to your purchase keywords.
01:38Let's go through the search results and talk about a few elements of this page.
01:42First of all, you have an option to sort by.
01:45So over here you have a sort for best match, which we've just talked about, but
01:49you also have the option to sort by ending soonest, newly listed, lowest price
01:55with shipping, and the highest price with shipping, also highest price without
01:59shipping, and the items that are nearest to you first.
02:03You also have these views, which include auctions only.
02:06So if you only want to see auction- style listings, you can click on this link
02:09right here. Or you have Buy It Now, where you can click and see only the Buy it Now listings.
02:15eBay also presents you with these related searches at the top here, because eBay
02:19thinks you might be interested in searching these keywords as well.
02:22So you might want to take time to go ahead and review some of these examples of
02:26different search terms that might help you find what you're looking for.
02:29Let's go to the bottom of the page and look at the pagination.
02:32There is a thing at the bottom here which allows you to not only flip through
02:35the search results right here--you can flip through the pages in the search
02:38results--but you can also indicate how many items per page you'd like to view.
02:42So if you want to look at 25 or 50 or 100 or 200 items per page, you can
02:47certainly do that, and you can use these tools at the bottom to flip through the
02:51various pages of listings that you've found.
02:56It's important to refine your keywords to narrow your search results.
02:59There is over 8,000 listings here, but you can add additional keywords if you want to.
03:04Let's say you're looking for antique brass lamp.
03:06You could go ahead and type it in an additional keyword and narrow the search
03:10even further. That cuts the search down substantially.
03:13When you're searching for something that's specifically got to make and a model,
03:16it's helpful to use the make and model to narrow the search and to help you with
03:20the comparison shopping.
03:21So if you're looking for something that's very particular, go ahead and try
03:25to find out what the model number is, and you can include that in your title search.
03:28Let's also look at this feature here.
03:30If you click on Include description in your search, you'll be searching these
03:35keywords not only in the title of the actual listing, but also the description
03:39text of that listing.
03:40So I'm going to go ahead and include the description in my search, and I'll get
03:43an even larger list of search results.
03:46Obviously, I'm trying to narrow my results down even further with the antique
03:49brass lamp example. But if you don't get enough results, you can use this feature
03:53to increase the potential listings that you might be reviewing.
03:57You can also use specific terms such as--here is an example:
04:00if I'm looking for antique cut glass I might type in the actual period in
04:04which the glass was made "Brilliant Period cut glass vase" versus just using the
04:09words "cut glass vase." That would return a lot fewer results, and they would be more accurate.
04:13You can go ahead and add things in, such as if you're looking for parts for a
04:17vehicle, you can type in the year.
04:19You can also use a wildcard, which we'll talk about in more detail later in
04:23another movie. But you can type in things like 199 and then the asterisk to help
04:28you find all of the listings for let's say a Camry radiator made in the 1990s.
04:33You can go ahead and add or remove the letter S to get more results.
04:37eBay is getting better about their intuitive search, where it will automatically
04:41make a plural for you. But in the meantime you can go ahead and add an S or
04:44remove it to get more results.
04:46And you should be careful about using extra words if you don't need them, such as
04:49"and, or, the," when you're making searches on the eBay site.
04:53I would definitely avoid punctuations, unless they're part of a brand name or
04:57something that's relevant to the search itself.
04:59Let's go back to our search results and talk about one more feature here that I
05:03want to show you, which is you can save the search.
05:05If you see here, there is a little option to Save the search, and we'll talking
05:08about how to do save searches and bookmarking searches later on in other movie
05:12during this education.
05:14We'll cover more complex searches, but now you have the most basic search under your belt.
05:18There are many ways to use search to your advantage as a buyer and to find what
05:22you're looking for every time.

Doing advanced searches
00:00You may be asking yourself the reason for all this eBay search training, but
00:03please trust me, it's critical to fully understand how to find merchandise on eBay.
00:08Let's explore a few more ways to discover search.
00:11Although we won't endeavor to fully cover every possible scenario, we will
00:15discover some great tips to help you find just about anything on eBay.
00:19First of all, I wanted to point out to you that if somebody tells you an eBay
00:22number, you can type that eBay number directly into any search box on the eBay web site.
00:27So if I was looking for a specific eBay number--I'm going to type this one inhere.
00:31A friend told me about this item it's an antique, and it's a lamp, and I was
00:35interested in finding it.
00:36I can go to any search box, type in the eBay item number, and I'll immediately
00:40find the lamp right here, and the eBay listing will pop up immediately right
00:45in front of my eyes.
00:46So that's a quick and easy way to find an auction or a fixed-price listing if a
00:49friend tells you about it.
00:51I also want to go back to the homepage and talk to you about Advanced search.
00:55So there is an Advanced search option right here.
00:57You can click on that right now.
00:59Over here you have different ways to do searches, and I'm going to walk you
01:03through each of these sections.
01:04We have a place where we can type in keywords--that's the standard search
01:08keywords--and we can also select, over here on the right, how we're going to
01:12find those keywords.
01:13So if we were to type in "antique lamp", for example, "antique lamp" here in this
01:19search box, we could also indicate how we want eBay to find those keywords:
01:24all the words in any order, any of the words in any order, the exact words in
01:29that exact order, and the exact words in any order.
01:33So there are different ways that the Advanced Search tool allows you to
01:36search the keywords.
01:37You can also exclude words from your search.
01:40So if you like antique lamps, but you're not fond of let's say bronze, you can
01:44go ahead and type in the word "bronze".
01:47You can also use the additional tools you see here.
01:49There is tips and tricks.
01:50You can find out more about them.
01:52If you want to click on this link, you'll learn more about advanced tips, and
01:55I'll go ahead and try that in a minute.
01:57You also can select categories if you want to search specific categories on eBay.
02:00You'll see that throughout the eBay web site, you're presented with the option to
02:04filter only through a specific category when you conduct a search.
02:08You can save your search automatically.
02:09You can search titles and descriptions--we had that option earlier in basic search.
02:14You can search on completed or final listings, the ones that have actually ended.
02:18You can filter by price, buying formats.
02:21You can also show search results with specific types of listings, such as PayPal
02:25accepted, listings ending within a certain time period,
02:29items with a certain number of bids.
02:31You can go ahead and look at items that have best offer on them, or items that
02:34have sale prices, or even charity listings.
02:37Items that have express shipping like overnight shipping, such as express mail,
02:41or UPS Red Label, you can filter by those.
02:44You can also find listings that offer free shipping, or local pickup, or you
02:48can find items within a certain number of miles of your ZIP code, or within a popular city.
02:53There are all kinds of different features you'll see here, and one of my favorite
02:58is to be able to search for a specific seller.
03:00So if I wanted to look for items by a specific seller, I could create a list.
03:05Either put one seller in here, or I could put in a list of sellers, and search
03:08just by those sellers.
03:10There is a lot of different advanced features there, and on the left-hand
03:13side I want to show you that you can look for items in eBay Motors by clicking
03:17on this Search option here, and you'll see that there is an interface for
03:20looking for a specific items in eBay Motors.
03:23You can look for items by a specific seller, by entering their ID and just
03:27pulling up those listings.
03:28You can see listings by a specific bidder.
03:31So if you know somebody's user ID, and you want to see what items they're
03:33bidding on, you can see that, too.
03:35Earlier I showed you how you could type in the item number anywhere on eBay.
03:38You also have an ability to search here that way as well.
03:41You can look for items in eBay's storefronts. eBay has virtual storefronts, and
03:45you can search items in the virtual storefronts.
03:48You can also find specific eBay stores by their name, or by keywords in the
03:52stores as well, and that way you can find virtual storefronts on eBay.
03:56And you can find a member on eBay using their user ID or e-mail address, but
04:00there is a caveat there:
04:01you'd actually have to have had a transaction with that person to find them by
04:04their e-mail address.
04:05That's important to know.
04:07If you have a transaction with someone else, and you want to find their contact
04:10information, like their phone number, you can go ahead and enter the user ID of
04:13that member and the transaction ID-- the item number that you have with your
04:17trading partner--and you'll be able to enter that here as well.
04:21Let's go ahead and go back to the Find items interface and look at
04:24Advanced Search options.
04:26Now I'm going to go ahead and show you that there is all kinds of help on the eBay
04:30system to show you how to do advanced searches.
04:32This is very voluminous information.
04:34You may not really care to read all of this, but if you are someone who is
04:37going to be a power buyer--someone who is buying a lot of stuff on the eBay web
04:40site--you're going to want to take time to go ahead and read how all of these things work.
04:44Let me go ahead and talk to you about that in a little bit more detail.
04:49Let's discuss ways to do advanced searches.
04:51You can use quotes to limit the search terms to that specific phrase.
04:55So if you put quotes around a phrase, eBay will search only that phrase and those
04:59keywords in that order.
05:01You can use an asterisk as a wildcard. If you don't know the full year, for
05:05example, and you want to search for a series of years, or if you want eBay to
05:08look for a series of possible keywords,
05:11and, for example, you could use the word "book" with an asterisk at the end to
05:14find things like books, bookshelf, bookmark, and so forth.
05:18You can also use terms in parentheses with commas separating the terms, and
05:21that acts as a boolean search where you can type in a list, such as if you're
05:25looking for something related to a car, you might use different variations of
05:29the word "car," like putting in parentheses car, auto, and vehicle with commas separating them.
05:33That would help you find listings with either one of those words, but not
05:37all three, for example.
05:39You can use the Minus sign in a keyword search to remove keywords.
05:42So if you were looking for a computer printer, but you didn't want the paper
05:46or the toner or the cable, you could go ahead and type in the keywords "Acme
05:50computer printer with -toner, -paper, and -cable," and that would exclude
05:55those keywords as well.
05:57eBay will automatically expand on your search in certain circumstances.
06:02eBay modifies your search to include items that have keywords you've entered, or
06:07it will also look for synonymous keywords from eBay's dictionary.
06:11eBay modifies your search to include items that have certain keywords in the
06:14title, or are also in a related category--and a common example of this would be
06:18searching for media.
06:20So for a Harry Potter DVD, eBay would not only look for Harry Potter in
06:24the title, but it also would look for Harry Potter DVDs in the DVDs and Movies categories.
06:30eBay modifies your search to include terms that have the keywords in the
06:33title but also have certain item specifics-- item specifics are attributes of the listing.
06:38And if you search for something like "Nike Golf," eBay would return items that
06:42have the word golf in the title, but also have Nike in the title or Brand equals
06:46Nike in the item specifics.
06:48This gets a little complicated, but basically item specifics are attributes
06:52that the seller has added to the listing.
06:54Okay, so you might be getting a little dizzy with all these details about
06:58advanced searches, but as you get through them, you'll become more experienced.
07:01You will have to do some of these on your own to really master the process of
07:04using advanced search techniques.
07:06Take some time to challenge yourself to find items that might be of interest to you.
07:10Do you want to buy a new car,
07:11or do you just want to find a piece of mom's favorite china pattern that was
07:14accidentally broken?
07:16Whatever it is that you're seeking, you're learning how to explore the
07:19competitive eBay marketplace and discover what's out there, how it's priced, and
07:23learning how to buy most efficiently.

Browsing categories
00:00As an eBay buyer, you may wish to learn how to browse eBay's various categories--
00:04specifically categories for the merchandise that interests you.
00:08By doing this you can more easily find the merchandise you want and pick up some
00:11bargains along the way.
00:13From the eBay homepage, click on the Categories option right here, and you will
00:17actually see, if you hover over it, you will see a bunch of categories
00:20underneath. Or you can click on All Categories and be taken to a list of all
00:23the categories on eBay.
00:25I am interested in finding a monopod, which is actually like a tripod for a
00:29camera, but it only has one leg on it.
00:30So I am going to click on Cameras & Photo, and I'll browse through this section here.
00:34You will see here on the left-hand side's subcategories, which are also called
00:38leaf categories, and that's like leaves on a tree.
00:41And you can click on Tripods, and if you click on Tripods & Supports, you will
00:46see all the tripods listed.
00:47There is a lot of listings: 18,273. But there is also another sub category called
00:53Monopods, and I will click on that.
00:55It only has 1,100 listings.
00:57And you will be able to see a list of all of the items that are available for
01:00sale in this category, so we are browsing through.
01:03At the top, you will see related search options that eBay presents to you.
01:06These are suggested searches that you can go ahead and click.
01:09And you have the ability to sort by different methods;
01:13you can sort by the items that are ending soonest, newly listed, have the lowest
01:17price or the highest price.
01:19You can also sort in a variety of other ways as well.
01:21I am going to look at items that have the lowest price first and scroll
01:24through these listings.
01:26So if you see something that catches your eye, you can go ahead and purchase it,
01:29either by bidding or using the Buy it Now option.
01:32And you can filter as well.
01:33The default view is to show all the items, but you have the ability to see
01:37auctions only, or you can see Buy it Now.
01:39Buy it Now is when you purchase without bidding.
01:42So browsing categories is easy, and it's a great way to find bargains.
01:46You can see lots of additional options here on the left-hand side, and ways
01:49that you can filter through and narrow the search even further and so your
01:53browsing becomes a little bit more focused, and we will be discussing that
01:56later on in the course.

Saving searches and favorite sellers
00:00Saving information for later use can be helpful to you as a buyer.
00:04Sometimes, you will want to be notified when items that you are looking for are
00:07listed on eBay, so you can monitor prices and look for bargains.
00:11This can be automated.
00:12We are going to organize a few searches, and we are going to organize a seller.
00:16We will actually bookmark these things, so that you can see how to track what's
00:19going on with more automation in a thing called My eBay.
00:22We will talk about that in a second.
00:24So first of all, I want to search for an item, which is going to be a 5' dvi
00:29cable, so I need a DVI cable for my computer.
00:32eBay does a little thing here where it actually suggests a search for you.
00:35You can click on that, or you can click on the Search button over here.
00:38I will go ahead and take advantage of eBay's suggestion.
00:40And I can see there is a 1,061 results.
00:43I can go ahead and narrow down these searches even further, and once I have
00:46refined my search, I can click this handy little option here called Save search.
00:51You will see a little pop-up that will ask you if you want to save this search
00:55and what you want to call it.
00:56You have to give it a name.
00:57It gives you a default name, which is the name of the actual set of characters
01:01that you entered to do the search. And then you can have eBay send you an e-mail
01:05every day when items that match this search criteria are listed on the eBay web site.
01:11Once you click Save, eBay will go ahead and show you that you have saved this
01:15search with a little green check, and it tells you that you have saved
01:18this search to My eBay.
01:20You can also save your favorite seller. So if you find an item, like I found an
01:24actual DVI cable for sale by this seller borntodeal,
01:28and if you are interested in saving the seller and bookmarking that seller--or
01:32even looking at the listing and adding it to your watch list on a regular basis--
01:36you can do these different saves. One of them is called Add to Watch list.
01:40So now I have added this item to my watch list, so items that I am watching, and
01:45I can also save this as one of my favorite sellers.
01:48I can put a note to myself. If I have a specific reason for wanting to bookmark
01:52this seller, I can add notes here, and you can put those notes right there.
01:56And then you can go ahead and click Save.
02:00Now what happens is you will see that I am transported right away to the My
02:04eBay section of eBay.
02:05This is something we are talking about for the first time.
02:07We will be discussing it in more depth later on.
02:10But over here in My eBay, you will see a section called Lists, and you have all
02:14the lists that you have got saved.
02:16You also have watch lists and other lists.
02:18You have saved searches, so you will see here that we have saved some searches.
02:22That includes the dvi cable plus two other searches that I had saved previously.
02:26And the we have saved sellers.
02:28There is a couple of sellers in there that I have also saved.
02:29You will notice that borntodeal is actually me, and then you have two other
02:33sellers here that I saved earlier.
02:35So by saving searches and favorite sellers, you will sharpen your knowledge of
02:39the marketplace, and you can also stay on top of bargains and find lower prices
02:42using these features.

Searching for completed items
00:00So why do you need to know about completed items?
00:03Among your most important research tasks when buying on eBay is always looking
00:08for the competitive price.
00:09Additionally, reviewing completed listings that are substantially similar to
00:13merchandise that you are looking for will help you see what other sellers offer
00:16by way of terms and conditions, and item quality.
00:19We will walk through research in completed items now.
00:21So this is virtually the same as basic or advanced searching, so what you are
00:25going to do is type in what you are interested in finding--
00:28first of all, 5' dvi cable. And then you will see eBay gives you some
00:33suggested searches.
00:34You can either click this click, or you can click on the Search button over here.
00:37I am going to go ahead and take eBay's suggestion.
00:40And you will see a list of active items for sale. And you can purchase an
00:44item now if you want to, but I would like to research and see what the going prices are.
00:49So over here on the left-hand side, you will see this little option here
00:52called Completed listings.
00:53I am going to check that box right now.
00:55You will need to be signed into eBay, and we are signed in right now to eBay, in
00:59order to see the completed listing.
01:00If you are not, you will be asked to sign in.
01:02And you will see over here a list of items in red and green.
01:05The red means that the item has actually not sold, and green means that it was a
01:09successfully sold item.
01:10So I am going to go ahead and scroll up and look at the way that you can sort.
01:14If I am interested in finding the best deal, I might sort by lowest prices
01:18first, so that's what I am going to do.
01:20You can see here on lowest prices first that the first sold item was an auction.
01:24You can see that it got bids, and it's a brand-new 5' dvi cable for a computer.
01:29It's a computer monitor cable.
01:31And it sold for $75 with a $1.99 shipping.
01:35So why did the 50-cent items not sell?
01:37Well, you can think about this for a second. These auctions didn't sell possibly
01:41because there is a lot of inventory on eBay, maybe people didn't bid on it
01:45because they couldn't find it, or maybe it's something about the listing wasn't
01:48attractive to other buyers. Maybe the shipping and handling was too high.
01:53So you will see here some of these cables are only up for a bid of a penny, but
01:57they are $5.20 in shipping; maybe that scared somebody off.
02:00So you can see here there are vary many ways to find completed listings.
02:04You can also drill down into categories here, and you can look at auction items
02:08only, so if you are just looking for items that were bid at auction. Or you can
02:12look at Buy it Now listings.
02:14By having a way to look at completed listings, you will get a solid foundation
02:18for researching on eBay.
02:20And completed items are the comparable sales, or in many cases non-sales, that
02:25will help you know exactly what you should realistically be paying on eBay for
02:29the same item you are interested in purchasing.

Filtering searches
00:00Now that you have mastered various searches, you can filter them.
00:03The reason to use eBay's filtering tools becomes obvious when there is a whole
00:07lot of stuff on eBay;
00:08finding exactly what you are looking for on a system that generally has a ton of
00:12stuff for every category can be daunting without filters.
00:15Perhaps you want to focus on items close to you, or items within a certain price
00:19range, even focus on items from specific countries.
00:23There are so many ways to filter and then focus your search to target just a few
00:27set of results and get exactly what you want.
00:30So I am going to do a search here for a 5' dvi cable--that's a computer monitor
00:35cable--and I will go ahead and pull up a list of 1,063 results.
00:40So there is a variety of ways to filter.
00:42First of all, we can do a category drill-down or a category filter.
00:46And since this is a computer monitor cable, I am going to click on
00:49Computer Accessories;
00:50you can see there is 357 items listed in that category.
00:55So drilling down reduces the number of results. And then I am only interested
00:58in cables and connectors, so I will click on that category, and I have filtered
01:01the search even more.
01:03You also have the ability to look at other things, like over here on the
01:06left-hand side you will see Show only.
01:08So if you want something fast, you can click on Expedited shipping as an option.
01:13If you want your seller to accept returns, in case you are buying something
01:16that maybe is expensive, and you want to have a returns policy just in case
01:19you are not sure if that's really what you want or not--you want to be able to return it--
01:23you have that option as well.
01:25And one of my favorites is free shipping.
01:27I love to buy items with free shipping because I know that I am getting just the
01:30price of the goods, and the shipping is free. That's great.
01:33It's an added bonus. Plus, Completed listings, if you want to use that condition.
01:36You have the other filters here, such as items that are new or used.
01:40The danger there is that not all sellers are actually proficient with listing;
01:44they don't always know how to use every feature on eBay.
01:47So by putting this filter, you might exclude some listings that you might be
01:51interested in, because sometimes sellers don't put on their listing whether the
01:55item is new or used, even if it might be new.
01:57You can filter by price. If you only want to buy items within a certain price
02:00range, you can go ahead and use this filter here. And you can select top-rated sellers.
02:05Let me show you this feature because it actually will bring up this list of top-rated sellers.
02:09Top-rated sellers are the sellers on eBay who have demonstrated that they are
02:13the best of the best.
02:14And you will see this little medal, this little medallion on their listings,
02:18showing that they have proven to be the best sellers on eBay, most reliable, and
02:23they deliver on their promises.
02:24So it's good to buy from top-rated sellers as well.
02:27That's something you might want to consider.
02:28And then you have the other options, too.
02:30You can filter by auction or Buy it Now or by location.
02:33If you are only interested in buying in US, you can narrow your search there.
02:36And here is another one: if you are interested in picking up the item, and you
02:39are close by, and you want to filter the results by distance, you can put down
02:43here a distance-based filter anywhere from 10 to 2,000 miles.
02:47Let's say you want to put in your ZIP code, and you want to find someone who's
02:50selling right there in your local community.
02:52That's great if you need to pick something up right away.
02:54Let's say I am urgently in need of this cable, and I need it right now; maybe I
02:58want to look for sellers that allow local pick up as well.
03:01So all of these different filters and preferences can be customized, too.
03:04You have the ability to click here, and you will see a pop-up window that allows
03:08you to customize the different preferences of filters as well. So you can make
03:12these different widgets--
03:13these options customize to your preferences--and then save those changes and
03:17make them permanent.
03:18So you will probably start to see the value of it all.
03:21It's true that you can create the most basic search for anything that has a
03:24small amount of inventory on eBay, and that works just fine.
03:27But as you get into more popular categories which have thousands of listings,
03:30the ability to filter search results will greatly enhance your product research.

5. Reviewing an Item Listing Page
Reviewing seller feedback
00:00Feedback is the very heart and soul of the eBay online marketplace, and it is
00:05one of the essential reasons that eBay has grown into a safe and wonderful place to trade.
00:10When you purchase or sell something on eBay, you have the privilege to leave
00:14the other eBay user feedback that represents how you felt about the experience with them.
00:19Users on eBay developed feedback over time, and as an eBay user, you want to
00:23treat your trading partners with fairness, so that you'll also receive positive
00:28feedback ratings during your transactions with them.
00:31Buyers and sellers have different feedback privileges from each other.
00:35A buyer may leave a positive, a neutral, or a negative feedback rating, and a short comment.
00:42Members receive one point for each positive rating, no points for neutral
00:46ratings, and a negative one point for each negative rating.
00:50Sellers may only leave positive feedback for buyers, which is to help of
00:53what feedback-hostage situations, or retaliation or a buyer feels
00:58uncomfortable leaving a candid feedback for seller, for fear that they
01:02might return a negative to them.
01:04Multiple purchases may be treated differently depending upon how closely
01:08they were made in time.
01:10If, for example, a buyer purchases more than one item from the same seller, the
01:14points the seller can receive may vary.
01:16If the sale occurred within the same week, the seller's rating will only rise by
01:20one point, regardless of how many feedback comments you leave for them that week.
01:25If the sales occur in different weeks, each rating you leave may affect
01:28their score by one point.
01:31Giving honest feedback is important, and a good idea as a buyer, but remember
01:35eBay is not a video game.
01:36You're dealing with real people and true-life situations, and it's important to
01:40remember that many sellers depend upon their eBay income to make a living.
01:44Although the majority of your experiences you have on eBay will be
01:47overwhelmingly positive, there will be the occasional hiccup. And you should
01:52make every effort possible to resolve challenges with the seller prior to
01:56leaving negative feedback that could adversely affect their business;
02:00things like family emergencies, medical problems, technical challenges and
02:04a myriad of other problems may result in the seller being unable to fill
02:08your order promptly.
02:10Honest mistakes happen, and it's important to reach out to your seller prior to
02:14hitting them with the negative.
02:16As a buyer, you're also permitted to rate your seller in four additional areas that
02:20affect a thing called the Detailed Seller Rating. These are Item as described,
02:25Communication, Shipping time, and Shipping and handling charges.
02:31You may only leave feedback if you're registered user on eBay, and new buyers must
02:35wait for period of seven days before they leave negative or neutral feedback for
02:39a PowerSeller that's been registered on eBay for at least 12 months.
02:43eBay also has the right to remove your feedback if you make obscene,
02:47inappropriate, or illegal comments.
02:50eBay may also prevent or remove feedback if you fail to pay for the
02:54transaction, if it's determined that your feedback is an error, or if it's
02:58irrelevant to the transaction, or for a number of other reasons that are the
03:02final decision of eBay.
03:03For example, it's generally not permitted to leave negative feedback for an
03:07overseas seller if the reason you did so that relates to customs duty or tax
03:12you had to pay the government.
03:15I'm bringing up these pointers to you so that you may review the seller's
03:18feedback with an objective eye.
03:20Feedback is subjective, and it should be given weight and consideration based
03:24upon the overall picture that it paints, not simply one, or a few, isolated feedback
03:29comments given by unrealistic buyers.
03:32Sellers tend to get less favorable detailed seller ratings, for example, for
03:36shipping and handling charges, because many buyers are simply not informed about
03:40the actual cost of sending an item across the country.
03:43In some instances, I've personally shipped an item the same day as I received the
03:47payment, and a buyer still gave me a poor rating for slow shipping.
03:51Keeping these details in mind when reviewing a seller's feedback profile is important.
03:56You rarely see a perfect profile.
03:59Feedback scores may also have little stars next to them.
04:02That happens when a user receives more feedback comments.
04:06Different colored stars mean different ratings, and shooting stars mean the user
04:10has received at least 10,000 feedback ratings.
04:13Giving a review of your seller's feedback prior to making a bid or purchase will
04:17greatly enhance your buying experience.

Understanding user icons
00:00From time to time, you'll notice some icons that will appear next to an eBay
00:03user's ID or on an eBay Listing Page, and they have some specific and important
00:08meanings to you on the eBay online marketplace.
00:11So we're in an actual search here, and you'll see some icons, such as this one right here.
00:15It's a rising sun, and I'll explain what the icons mean later.
00:18If you scroll through a search result on eBay, sometimes you'll see icons like
00:22this one pop up as well.
00:23I'm going to flip to another page, and you'll see on this About Me page--this is
00:27a bio page for a user called KindleCause--
00:29you'll see icons such as the shooting star icon, which means a high level of feedback.
00:34You'll see the Me Page icon, which I'll explain in a minute. And then you
00:38have things like this, top 10,000 reviewer.
00:40If you go to an actual feedback profile, sometimes you'll see the ID Verify
00:45icon, and I'll explain what that is.
00:47Then if you're looking in My eBay, if you've saved an actual item, and you're
00:51watching it, you'll sometimes see some icons that will appear over here, such as
00:54the Buy It Now or Best Offer icon.
00:56Over here, if you look at an item listing page, you'll also see icons appearing
01:00next to the user's user ID. And to find out what the meaning of all these are,
01:05you can look in the Help System.
01:06You can click under Help Topics, and you can type in the keyword "icons."
01:10If you scroll down to Knowing Your Seller--that will be the first thing we'll
01:14take a look at--you'll learn how to identify what the different icons mean.
01:18This particular icon, this is sort of a badge or an award, a top-rated seller
01:23achieves this award as a power seller by having great Detailed Seller Ratings.
01:28That means they've gotten great feedback from their buyers on eBay.
01:31The ME, the multicolored ME stands for the About Me page, and that tells you
01:36more about the user. And a buyer or a seller can create an About Me page;
01:39that's a biographical page about them.
01:42If you click on that, you can read more about that particular user on eBay.
01:45The ID Verify icon--that's this one right here,
01:48we saw that earlier--is received when a member on eBay goes that extra step or
01:52that extra mile to become a verified eBay member.
01:56As a verified eBay member, especially for sellers, this really creates an
02:00additional assurance level that this person is a real person, that they're legit.
02:05When you're doing business with them, they are who they say they are.
02:08Then you have this little icon, a person with rays coming out of their head.
02:12That's if a user on eBay is new, and they have been registered for 30 days or less.
02:17This two-person icon with an arrow tells you that the user has changed their ID
02:21in the last 30 days.
02:23You can read through this page and learn more about sellers, but also I'm
02:26interested in going back to Help Topics, and I'm going to search Help Topics again for icons.
02:30In this case, I want to know what the icons on a listing page mean.
02:34If you see the P, that means that the listing accepts PayPal as a method of
02:39payment. And I've always stated that I think PayPal is the best method of
02:42payment for paying online.
02:44It's secure, safe, definitely has a lot of protections for you.
02:47So that's a good icon to see on at listing.
02:50The rising sun we saw earlier means that the listing has just been put on eBay
02:54within the past day.
02:55The Buy It Now, we saw earlier, the Buy it Now with the Best Offer option was
02:59what we saw, but the Buy it Now means that this particular item or listing has a purchase option.
03:04So there is no bidding. You can actually purchase it.
03:06Some auctions have Buy It Nows also.
03:08This ribbon, the blue and the yellow ribbon icon means the seller has chosen
03:12to donate a percentage of the proceeds, or all of the proceeds of the listing, to charity.
03:17We saw the ME icon earlier.
03:18That's the biographical About Me page for a member, and that's a great thing
03:22that a lot of members put in, and we talked about that earlier.
03:25Then we have the stores icon, which means that that particular user has an eBay store.
03:30That means they have a storefront, or virtual storefront.
03:32We've talked about the top-rated seller icon, and then for eBay Motors, we have
03:36this icon called 4 x 4 and then V8.
03:38These just indicates specific attributes about the item listing, such as whether
03:42the vehicle is a 4 x 4, or has a V8 engine as well.
03:45The icons on user profiles and listing pages help you get a visual cue of the
03:50person, or the listing information that you're looking at, and it helps improve
03:53your buying experience. And it makes your buying experience a little more rapid
03:57because you can use the visual cues to make quick decisions about who you're
04:00doing business with or about the specific attributes on your listing.

Reviewing items by location
00:00There are many ways to filter a search, and in this movie we'll discuss how to
00:04review items by location.
00:05We've talked a little bit about this earlier, but I'm going to take a deeper dive.
00:09So let's go ahead and put in a search for a 5' DVI cable.
00:13The first thing you'll see is a bunch of search results, and if you look over
00:17here under Sort by, you'll be able to sort by items that are nearest to you.
00:22You can also go on the left-hand side here, and you can take a look at location.
00:25So if you want to look at items that are only in the US, maybe you don't want
00:28to buy from an overseas seller, or maybe you specifically need the item
00:31quickly, you can go ahead and select only from North American sellers, or you
00:36can select items worldwide.
00:37There is also this option here for distance search, which I can punch in a
00:42specific number of miles from my ZIP code.
00:44So if I type in 91505, I can see items that are within 10 or 25 or 50 or even
00:512,000 miles within my ZIP code.
00:53So I have that ability as well.
00:55I'm going to go ahead and punch in a 10-mile search from 91505, and you'll see
01:00over here I only have three results.
01:02If, for example, you need something right away, and you want to pick it up, and
01:05you want to purchase it immediately, you can use this option to go ahead and
01:09find items that are close to you.
01:10I'm going to go ahead and click on this particular listing, and you can see over
01:14here that this is in Burbank, California.
01:16In fact, that's me; I'm the seller here. But I'm showing this to you so that you can see that if the
01:21seller is willing, you can purchase the item and pick it up,
01:24you might actually want to contact the seller through the eBay listing page and
01:27ask if a local pickup is allowed.
01:29Let's go back for a second and take a peek again at the previous Search page.
01:33We're going to go ahead and look at it a little differently.
01:36So let's say, for example, you're looking at listings within 100 miles of you.
01:40You can go ahead and look at a larger number of results. And instead of sorting
01:44by best match or one of these other options, you can sort items that are
01:48nearest to you first.
01:49You'll see here that it gives you the number of miles from your location, your ZIP code.
01:53So if you want to browse through listings, maybe look at them in photographs and
01:57see what you're possibly looking for is maybe in the pictures,
02:00you can see the number of miles from your ZIP code, and you'll see the listing
02:03that I showed you earlier is only 5 miles from 91505.
02:06Using the Location option to find products close to you that you can pick up
02:10allows you to save money on shipping.
02:12Using this feature to find only products within your state or country can cut
02:16down on shipping time as well. And if the seller is close enough, and you're
02:19willing to make the drive, you could pick up the item if they're willing and if
02:22they feel comfortable with that option.
02:24That would save you on shipping cost when you're buying items on eBay.

Clarifying item descriptions
00:00Now that we have talked about the various searching and filtering methods of
00:04using eBay, it's important to understand how to review a description.
00:08Once you find something that you are interested in, you may be very excited, and
00:12you may be ready to buy it right away, but it's important to review the seller's
00:15terms and conditions and all the information that they put in their listing.
00:19So I've got a couple of listings with different types of terms and conditions,
00:23and I want to review them with you.
00:24You will notice on this 5' DVI computer monitor cable that this particular
00:28listing has free shipping.
00:29So that's an important detail.
00:31Also, this particular listing has, if you'll notice over here, a bid option, which
00:35means it's an item that you'd have to bid on.
00:37There's no Buy It Now feature, so you have to actually bid on it and be in a
00:41competitive bidding situation.
00:42You will see some promotions from eBay, such as eBay Bucks, which you can learn more about later.
00:47And of course we have talked about all the different listing details, such as the
00:51seller's User ID, the icons, and the feedback. But here is an important detail.
00:56This particular listing offers a 30-day money back guarantee, and the buyer
01:00pays return shipping.
01:01You can see more details by clicking Read Details.
01:04We'll go ahead and read those details in a second.
01:06In the description, we can see that this is a high-quality DVI cable that came
01:10with a Samsung monitor, but the seller didn't need it.
01:13It's 5 foot in length, brand-new, never used, still has the plastic protection caps.
01:18You know you are getting a real, brand- new item when you are purchasing this item.
01:22Under the Shipping and Payment Terms, you can see that the shipping and
01:25handling charges are free. So if you are purchasing it in US, you get free
01:29shipping on this item.
01:30It comes through USPS First Class Mail.
01:33Usually the item shifts within three business days of receiving the payment,
01:37so the seller promises to ship it out within three business days.
01:41It has a 30-day returns policy, and a money back guarantee.
01:44If you are not completely satisfied within a month, you can return it with
01:47no questions asked.
01:48Over here you can see the PayPal is the preferred method of payment on the listing.
01:52So it's very good when you look at the details that you can see that if you are
01:56not happy with this particular item, you have the option to return it.
02:00Let's take a look at a different type of listing and the terms here.
02:03This 1888 Morgan silver dollar is a certified uncirculated MS62 is the grade.
02:10You will see that there are in fact no returns accepted on this listing.
02:13There is a shipping charge of $4.95 which is Economy Shipping.
02:17If you click See More Services, you can also see that the seller offers local pickup.
02:21So if you wanted to pick this up in person, you have the right to do that, too.
02:25For something like a collectable item and if you are near by the seller, that
02:28might be important to you.
02:29As we scroll down, we can read more details here.
02:32This comes from a personal collection, and it says it's professionally graded
02:36and encapsulated in a protective case.
02:38"Bear in mind you are bidding on a graded and certified coin that has been third-
02:42party graded and professionally encapsulated.
02:44As a result of the absolute nature of this type of grading and the nature of
02:49this item, returns are not allowed.
02:51I guarantee you will receive the exact coin pictured.
02:54Let me know if you have any questions before bidding."
02:56Then under the Shipping and Payment Terms, you can see the Shipping option is for
03:00Parcel Post, or you can use Local Pickup, and it clearly states that this order
03:04does not accept returns.
03:06But if you wanted to pick it up, you could, and you could inspect it
03:08personally in person.
03:10It's important to read the item description and use that as your senses when you
03:14are shopping on eBay.
03:15In the same way that you might pick up an item and read the packaging to
03:18discover information about a product at your local store, you can read the item
03:22description and the details to become more familiar with the seller and
03:25understand their terms and conditions.
03:27Don't just press the Buy button or bid on it until you have a chance to
03:30actually go through and look, discover, learn, and understand what you are
03:34getting yourself into.
03:35As you become more experienced with buying on eBay, you will begin to see more
03:39in depth how the item description indicates the quality of a listing and how
03:43different sellers handle descriptions differently.

Understanding shipping options
00:00You are beginning to understand all the mechanics of listing descriptions and what they include,
00:06but let's focus a little bit on a very important detail about getting the
00:10item, which is shipping.
00:12We are going to go through a process of discovery to understand how different
00:15sellers offer different methods of shipping,
00:18and how the cost of the shipping affects the total cost of your purchase.
00:22Plus, we are going to see the different methods offered by different sellers.
00:26So we are looking at an actual search for an antique vase, and I am going
00:29to scroll down and look at some features that are on the left-hand side of
00:32the Search interface.
00:33You will see over here that there are different options for showing listings.
00:38One of them is that you can look at listings that offer expedited shipping.
00:42So if you are in a hurry to get something--maybe there's a birthday coming up,
00:45and you want to give a gift--
00:46well, you can click on that option and show Expedited shipping.
00:50Also, a lot of sellers promote free shipping.
00:53It's a way to see that a seller has really made a commitment to getting your business.
00:57Perhaps they have thrown in Free shipping as a carrot to get you interested
01:00in making a purchase.
01:02Once you've filtered through and looked at different types of shipping options,
01:05and you see what the sellers are offering--or maybe you don't even care if it's
01:08expedited or free, you just want the merchandise that you are interested in--
01:12you can look at individual listings and get a better view of what each type of
01:16shipping option is for different types of listings.
01:19Not all free shipping is equal.
01:20So let's go ahead and take a look at the Free shipping option on a few listings.
01:24You see here that free shipping is offered, but what is free shipping?
01:28Is that somehow different than shipping I have to pay for.
01:31This particular seller has stated that they offer free standard shipping,
01:36but they haven't explained what type of shipping.
01:38Some people use the post office; some people use UPS; some people use different
01:43methods of different companies to ship out merchandise.
01:46So it might be a good idea in this case to ask, well, what carrier we will be sending it?
01:50Not all carriers handle merchandise equally.
01:52Some carriers are more adept at handling fragile and breakable items.
01:56Let's look at another listing.
01:57We have a listing here for another item with free shipping.
02:00I want to talk about that.
02:01The reason I am bringing up free shipping is because a lot of sellers are using
02:05free shipping to promote their listings.
02:07So tell me a little bit more about these Free shipping's options.
02:09You can go ahead and look at the shipping and payment option for this seller,
02:12and they give free expedited shipping.
02:15They use USPS Priority Mail, which only takes a couple of days to arrive. Very good.
02:20This is a great seller.
02:21They are offering fast free shipping.
02:23Then here is another listing with free shipping, and let's look at what
02:26this seller is offering.
02:28For this free shipping option, the seller is offering Economy Free shipping, which
02:32they specified is USPS Parcel Post. Pretty slow stuff.
02:36I mean parcel post is cheap, but it takes a while to get there.
02:39Let's look at other shipping options that sellers offer.
02:42This is a listing without free shipping, but it offers a variety of
02:46different shipping options.
02:47So let's take a look at shipping and payment options from this seller.
02:50So this seller gives you a chance to calculate shipping.
02:53So if you are in ZIP code 91605 that's the ZIP code that I am right now,
02:57I can go ahead and get rates by typing in my ZIP code and clicking on Get Rates.
03:02I will punch in a different ZIP code;
03:04let's punch in a ZIP code for a place I used to live back in Virginia: 22042.
03:09And we can see that when we click Get Rates, the rates have changed.
03:12The rates go up because it's distance based.
03:15So this particular seller is in Sonora, California.
03:18You can see that the rates are based on the distance.
03:20They offer different shipping options depending on your favorite method of shipping.
03:25Here you have Economy Shipping, which is the cheapest.
03:28If you pay a little bit more, you can get UPS Ground.
03:31And we will talk about why that perhaps a good idea in a minute.
03:34The seller also offers, for $12.20, a USPS, which is the postal service, Priority Mail
03:40Medium Flat Rate box.
03:41So this seller is willing to use flat rate shipping for priority mail, which is
03:44very fast, and if you are far, far away, you might want to use that a shipping
03:48option. For a couple of bucks more,
03:50your shipping will be very quick, because Priority Mail is quite rapid.
03:54So let's talk a little bit about the different methods of shipping and how they work.
03:58First of all, UPS automatically adds $100 dollars of insurance, and they have
04:04real-time tracking--very important for a lot of people, especially if they are
04:07buying breakable or important items;
04:09they want some insurance on those items.
04:11If it can't it be easily replaced, and you can't get another one, you might want
04:16to make sure you use UPS, because it has automatic insurance.
04:20USPS does not have automatic insurance.
04:22The United States Postal Service requires the seller to buy insurance.
04:25So you might want to ask the seller, are they going to include insurance in the
04:29price of shipping, or do you have to pay extra for that?
04:32Express Mail with the Postal Service has automatic insurance.
04:35If you need something really fast, you might want to ask the seller if they
04:39would allow you to pay a little extra and send the item with Express Mail or
04:43with UPS Red Label or some method that's very, very quick and overnight.
04:47Expensive items do require insurance,
04:49so if it's breakable or expensive or something that cannot be replaced,
04:52if the seller is not offering a guarantee, if it's not delivered, you should be
04:56sure to require it from your seller on the items that you feel need it.
05:00Basically, anything, if it's expensive enough, I just always ask for insurance.
05:04Because eBay's system automatically calculates shipping for you, if this seller
05:09offers calculated shipping, shipping cost can be a little complicated at times.
05:14You might want to give your seller a chance to resolve an expensive shipping
05:17amount before passing on a good deal.
05:19What I mean is if you go to a listing and you punch in your ZIP code, and the
05:23shipping cost is expensive, you might want to ask yourself, maybe it's a problem
05:27with the information that the seller punched in.
05:29Maybe the seller doesn't realize there is a problem.
05:32So what I do is instead of assuming the seller is trying to overcharge me, I go
05:36ahead and ask the seller if it possibly could be an oversight or an error.
05:39I am diligent, and I find out if maybe they will give me a better deal.
05:43So if I do inquire about shipping, I might score a big cost savings on shipping,
05:48especially if I am combining multiple items from the same seller.
05:50I always ask about that, too.
05:53Taking a little bit of time to review the shipping methods offered by your
05:56seller and understanding the different methods plus insurance will insure not
06:00only speedy delivery of your item plus safe delivery and make sure that if
06:04anything should happen you will always be covered with the appropriate
06:07insurance coverages.

Understanding payment terms
00:00When reviewing an item listing, in addition to feedback, item location, and
00:05description, you should take the time to review payment terms.
00:09This is very important as well.
00:11This can give you information about what type of payments a seller accepts, and
00:15assist you at the time of purchase.
00:16When you are checking out and paying for an item, it's important to know, well
00:19how does the seller wish to be paid?
00:21You might want to read it before you place a bid or use the Buy It Now feature.
00:25I have taken the time to pull up some random listings and a quick disclaimer:
00:29I don't know any of these sellers, and I just randomly search for these items on eBay.
00:33I want to walk through the payment terms for a variety of different listings.
00:37So I pulled up five listings, and I would like to show you the payment terms of
00:41these five random listings.
00:43To see the payment terms for your seller, you might see the information in the
00:46Shipping and Payment section. But a lot of sellers also will include payment
00:51information in their listing description.
00:54This seller has a listing template, and that template has this system of tabs
00:58that allows you to see the payment terms in one of the tabs.
01:01At the end of the listing, payment is due within a week.
01:03Well that seems fair.
01:04The seller will combine listings and ship them together. Well, that's great.
01:08They accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover via PayPal.
01:13You will notice that they do not accept direct credit card payments, which means
01:17they only use PayPal to process their payments.
01:20It is possible to use PayPal to process a major credit card without actually having a
01:25PayPal account, which is what they are trying to tell you.
01:27Here in the second listing, we have a seller who has different payment terms as well.
01:32If you scroll through their listing, you will see that they have a long
01:34template, but you know what, it's okay.
01:36It's probably a stock template they use for every item.
01:39They allow local pickup, which means you can pay a person with--I am sure cash,
01:43or I am sure credit card if you walk into their store.
01:45They are a company that offers merchandise, but they are also a retail store.
01:48You will see here under Payment Policy they have a custom payment policy, and
01:53they ask you to use eBay's checkout system.
01:55They warn you if you don't use the eBay's checkout system, you might have a
01:59delay in processing your order.
02:01The Payment Options they give you are PayPal.
02:03They also take electronic checks through PayPal, and they take direct
02:07credit card payments.
02:08You will see right here, that means they will take a direct payment.
02:11They give you a telephone number to call, as well.
02:13Over here in this next listing you will see that this seller is selling a loose
02:18diamond, and they have more restrictive payment terms on their listing.
02:22You will see that if you scroll through, there is quite a bit of information
02:25here, and they have all kinds of store policies and details.
02:29But kind of hidden down at the very bottom in sort of discrete text, it says we
02:33not only accept all major credit cards through PayPal, but they also take bank
02:37wire transfers, which could be okay if they have good feedback.
02:41It might be a little uncomfortable if they don't.
02:44Every purchase above $15,000 must be made through a bank-to-bank wire transfer.
02:49So, it's important to look at the seller's feedback before you start wiring
02:53money over, and this seller has really good feedback.
02:56Let's take a look at this listing.
02:57This is a listing for a seller who is in Hong Kong.
02:59This seller is actually out of the country.
03:01This seller has different payment terms as well.
03:03Let's scroll down and look through the listing.
03:05You can see that the seller has a really pretty listing, lots of great information.
03:09And it's a template, too.
03:11That's what all this nice pretty html is.
03:14The seller takes PayPal;
03:15they also take Visa, MasterCard, processed through PayPal.
03:19They take a thing called Bank Deposit Express.
03:22I don't know anything about that. Maybe you do,
03:24but I don't know what that's all about.
03:25They also take direct deposit through the NAB Company, National Australia Bank,
03:30and see e-mail for instructions.
03:32But they do not accept money order or checks.
03:36And here is another seller with different payment terms.
03:38Again, this seller is out of the country.
03:40You can see that they are in Australia.
03:42And I am going to scroll down and take a look at this listing.
03:44So you see very nice pictures and I'm scrolling through and reading.
03:48And there's all kinds of information about shipping, and then here we come
03:52to the payment terms.
03:53"Please make contact within three days and payment must be made within 7 days
03:57of winning the item."
03:58That's sounds very fair--"unless you advise us on combining." Oh!
04:01Okay. Well, they offer combined shipping. That's very good.
04:03"Failure to do so unless otherwise arranged will result in the item being
04:07re-listed and the buyer being reported to eBay." Oh!
04:09That's very serious.
04:11I will remind you, it's important to make sure you follow through with your
04:15purchases on eBay, and although you can't receive negative feed back from your seller,
04:19too many unpaid items will result in you being suspended.
04:22So that's actually something to take seriously.
04:25They accept PayPal, Bank Deposit, Bank Transfer, Money Order as well. Well,
04:31these are all great and flexible things, and it's important to know the
04:34different payment terms that are offered by different sellers.
04:37But let's take a minute to recap all of this.
04:40It's important to review the item listing carefully and pay a close attention to
04:44the various payment methods.
04:46Make sure the one you are most comfortable with is actually an option.
04:50PayPal is generally the best way to give a payment to the seller,
04:53and usually the most secure.
04:55You don't have to provide a credit card number.
04:57You are not revealing any personal information other than your address.
05:00And you might want to avoid sellers who ask for checks or money orders
05:04or cash in the mail.
05:05Often this is a road to trouble, and even though it may not be a bad idea for a
05:09cheap item, if it's a more expensive item,
05:11I just don't do it.
05:12I would never pay with instant money transfer system, such as MoneyGram or Western Union.
05:17They are great companies, but a lot of sellers who ask for those, they may be
05:21people you don't want to business with because there is no guarantee that the
05:24merchandise will be delivered, and
05:26you don't have much recourse if it isn't.
05:28For really high-priced items, you might want to ask the seller if they would
05:31agree to a service such as escrow.com, which is an officially sanctioned service
05:35recommended by eBay which allows you to have your money placed into an
05:39intermediary, like a third party, to hold the funds until the item is either
05:43picked up, or you have assurance that it will be delivered.
05:46You should be cautious on international transactions with high-priced items and
05:50very popular items as well.
05:52And I recommend use caution and make sure you are really paying attention to the feedback.
05:56Now that we have gone a little more in depth with payment terms, you should be
05:59starting to see the better picture of how eBay works.
06:01I would like to point out a fairly well known fact that there is a small
06:05minority of sellers out there who simply don't offer PayPal, but they have great feedback.
06:09If someone offers very inexpensive items at great prices, it's a matter of your
06:15own comfort level that matters.
06:16I suppose I am really okay if I am mailing a dollar in cash in the mail to buy
06:20a beautiful image from the postcard seller because I know it's really not that
06:23profitable for them to be accepting credit cards or a PayPal, considering there are fees involved.
06:28I would not, however, send a money order or wire transfer to buy an expensive
06:32laptop from someone in another country.
06:34It's really up to your own discretion, and as long as you are an educated
06:38and informed buyer, you will be doing what's right for you when you pay for
06:41your items on eBay.

Understanding returns policies
00:00As you may have figured out by now, eBay doesn't sell anything themselves.
00:05The trading on eBay's site is conducted by and between the actual buyers and
00:10the sellers, not eBay.
00:11eBay offers a venue, just like a mall, and buyers and sellers meet in this venue
00:16to trade directly with each other.
00:18So let's think about returns for a second.
00:20This is going to maybe leave you wondering, what's the returns policy for a seller on eBay?
00:24Well, it varies.
00:26In this movie, I am going to discuss returns policies for eBay listings.
00:30So I've taken the time to go through quite a few listings on eBay, and randomly
00:34picked out five listings to review the returns policies of different sellers.
00:39I'd like to clarify that I don't know any if these sellers, and I literally,
00:42randomly pulled these up on eBay.
00:44So the first seller is selling a gold-finish pocket watch chain. The first thing
00:49I notice is it says right here, "As Is."
00:52I am going to assume that I am not going to be able to return this item if I
00:55am not happy with it.
00:56Well, let's take a look.
00:57Generally speaking, you'll see a returns section right here on the eBay
01:00listing, and you'll also notice that eBay covers this purchase with eBay Buyer Protection.
01:05So you know what? Even if I am not 100% satisfied, I've got a Buyer Protection program with eBay.
01:11I am going to scroll down and read a little bit more about the sellers terms and
01:15conditions and the returns policy, so let's read it.
01:18"Please ask all questions before bidding or use the Buy it Now option as all
01:23sales are final." Okay.
01:24"Under certain circumstances we authorize and accept a return for special
01:27reasons, but there will be a restocking fee."
01:29Okay, well that makes sense. Let's see why.
01:31There must be a reason, right? So, let's read the description.
01:34"This is for a nice weight, gold pocket chain"--yes I see, the latch sticks, so
01:40unfortunately, it's an as-is item.
01:42It's impossible to open the latch. Okay.
01:43Well, if I am okay with that, I'll go ahead and buy it, and apparently it's cheap enough.
01:47The current bid is only $4.80.
01:51Let's look at another listing with a different type of returns policy.
01:54I see here this seller is offering a seven-day money back guarantee, and
01:57the buyer has to pay return shipping.
01:59I am going to go ahead and click Read details.
02:01In this returns policy, the seller guarantees the quality of the product, and if
02:06there is any defects, they'll replace the order and refund the payment.
02:09Okay, that's no problem.
02:10Well, I think that's great.
02:11They have a five-star guarantee.
02:12Well, let's read a little bit more about that.
02:14I am going to click on the description; maybe there is some more details about
02:17this seller's returns policy in there.
02:20Guarantee and Service.
02:21All of your purchases are guaranteed for 30 days unconditionally money back guarantee.
02:26Great, well that's terrific.
02:27They also pledge a 24-hour response time (Monday through Friday).
02:30Okay, so they don't work on weekends. No problem.
02:33Use e-mail, or we have our specially-trained staff. Call this toll free number. Terrific.
02:38So this seller offers not only a money back guarantee but a way to reach them if
02:41you have a concern about your order.
02:43So, let's go ahead and take a look at some other listings.
02:46In this listing, this seller offers also a one-week money back guarantee, and
02:50the buyer has to pay return shipping.
02:52Okay, well let's scroll down and read a little bit more about that.
02:55Here is the description, here is the returns policy.
02:58"Your satisfaction with this purchase is 100% guaranteed.
03:01If you are not satisfied, simply return it in seven days, and we'll replace it
03:06or refund the cost of the item, excluding exact return shipping."
03:09Apparently, you have to pay the exact shipping cost and handling fees. Okay.
03:13"You will need to contact us to get an authorization number." Okay.
03:16So you can't just send it back; you have to get an RMA: a return
03:19merchandise authorization.
03:21"No returns will be accepted without an authorization number and a restocking fee applies."
03:25Oh, well, it really is a clincher, 20% off the original purchase.
03:29Well, that's kind of tough.
03:30Well I guess I better read carefully and make sure I really want to buy that.
03:33That's kind of a tough returns policy.
03:35Here is one with free shipping, and let's take a look at their returns policy. 30 days, wow!
03:41A 30-day money back guarantee, and the buyer has to pay return shipping.
03:45Let's read up a little bit more about this.
03:47So, this seller has a really lenient returns policy.
03:51Well, let's read what that's all about.
03:53Warranties and returns, they are 100% committed to 100% satisfaction.
03:58"Let us know within three business days." No problem.
04:01"Report any discrepancies within seven days."
04:03Did you change your mind?
04:05Okay, well they give you some really detailed returns policies.
04:08You have a 30-day guarantee.
04:10If you return things like bats and gloves and apparel, they have some very
04:14specific policies about those items.
04:16They have to still be in the wrapper and never used, or the glove has to be not
04:20oiled or not altered.
04:21The apparel has to still have the tags on it.
04:24But if you have some merchandise that you are not happy with, they'll go ahead
04:27and give your money back even it's open.
04:29Some they won't allow you to return at all, such as personalized items.
04:32I guess we get a monogrammed item, if you put your monogram on it, you can't return it.
04:37Let's look at the last listing.
04:38Here is a faucet, a Victorian- --which means, you know it's Victorian--style faucet,
04:43and they offer two-week money back guarantee.
04:45You are starting to notice a pattern here.
04:47Every returns policy is different;
04:49it's like a handcrafted custom moment every single time.
04:53So they do accept returns within two weeks, okay? And the customer is responsible
04:57for return shipping.
04:58This is pretty common, although I will tell you,
05:00if I personally sell something on eBay, I offer not only an unconditional money
05:05back guarantee, but I also offer free return shipping because I feel that if a
05:10buyer buys something--especially used merchandise--they should have a chance to
05:14return the product if they are not completely satisfied, and owe nothing and have paid nothing.
05:19These are my personal feelings about a returns policy.
05:23So, let's talk a little bit more about it.
05:26Most high-volume sellers will offer a returns policy because they are in business.
05:30So they want to make money;
05:31they want to encourage sales, and people like sellers who offer returns.
05:35Some sellers offer a returns policy and others do not. It's a toss-up.
05:39It depends on the seller. It also depends on the item.
05:42Be sure to check on whether your item could be returned before you buy it.
05:45Once you hit that Buy it Now or bid on an item and win, you are responsible for
05:50the terms that were listed in that listing. And you have to bear in mind this is
05:54entirely up to the seller.
05:56If a policy is not stated, or it's unclear or confusing, then ask for
06:01clarification before you order.
06:03You should also ask the seller, under what conditions may you return the item, or
06:07make sure it's clearly stated.
06:09Also, who pays the return shipping?
06:11Is it your responsibility, or does the seller issue a prepaid label or a calltag?
06:16What timeframe is allowed for returning merchandise?
06:19You know, is it seven days, 30 days, what's allowed?
06:22How is a refund given?
06:23Is it given the same way you paid, like PayPal?
06:26Do they give you a store credit to buy something else? Or do they just give you a
06:30gift card of some kind?
06:31I mean, there are different types of policies;
06:33it just depends on the seller.
06:34Will there be a restocking charge?
06:36Several of the sellers that we just reviewed had restocking fees, which means
06:39you don't get all your money back; you have a restocking fee if you return the item.
06:43If the item is sold as-is, as with the chain that we looked at, are you going to
06:47be able to live with that? Is that okay?
06:49If it's a collectible item, maybe you expect there to be damage or issues
06:53or problems with it.
06:54An example of this concern might pop up when you are talking about something
06:58brand new, like an mp3 player with a manufacturer's warranty, or maybe a
07:02collectible item. But in both cases, it would be totally reasonable if the seller
07:07didn't allow returns
07:08because, in the case of the new merchandise with warranty, you'd go back to the
07:12manufacturer, in the case of the collectible item you are getting an as-is item.
07:16Now that you've got a feel for what type of things you are looking for in
07:20item listings, you also want to check out all the details, the terms of sale,
07:24and be sure you are getting exactly what you want with the conditions that
07:28best meet your needs.
07:29Using the returns policy can help you get ahead of the eBay buying game.
07:33For instance, if you have ordered a car part which maybe ended up not fitting
07:37your car, you'd probably want a return guarantee.
07:39If you are buying the latest brand-name gadget, you may need to rely on a
07:42manufacturer's warranty and not a returns policy from the seller.
07:46Keep your expectations in line and reasonable when it comes to what you are
07:50buying and what you are expecting from a seller.
07:52Many sellers are home-spun entrepreneurs, not big box retailers;
07:56they will want to be able to protect themselves, too, from unreasonable returns.

Asking a question
00:00Once you have all the information the seller provided you with--such as
00:03location, description, shipping information, payment terms, and returns policy--
00:09you may still have questions about the item.
00:11Maybe the seller didn't make it absolutely crystal clear whether or not the
00:15item was new or used, or whether an accessory was included with the item.
00:20Maybe you are wondering if it comes with the manufacturer's warranty, in the
00:23case of electronics.
00:25Luckily there is a way to simply ask the seller a question about an item and go
00:29ahead and find out what you need to know before you make a purchase.
00:32It's a good idea to ask the questions that you have that may be a condition of
00:36your purchasing before you place a bid on an auction, or purchase the item.
00:41So using this Morgan silver dollar example, I am going to go ahead and show you
00:45how to ask a question.
00:47The first thing you want to do is scroll down, and you will see over here a
00:50questions and answers section about this item.
00:53Bear in mind that eBay's site changes form time to time, and you may see the
00:57location of the Ask a question button will move periodically.
01:00I'll click on the Ask a question option, and you will see that eBay is really
01:04trying hard to help sellers reduce the amount of unnecessary communication by
01:09giving you a summary of all the details of the listing that maybe you don't need
01:14to ask the question, maybe it's already in the listing.
01:15Because a lot of times people get excited about an item, maybe the description
01:18is too long, and the seller has provided too much detail.
01:21In that case, you might get confused, and you might want to ask the seller a question.
01:25Well, eBay helps summarize the details.
01:27So I am going to click on one of these options, and you will see the first thing
01:30I click is details about the item.
01:32Details that borntodeal has listed this item as Uncirculated.
01:36So if my question was, is this uncirculated?
01:39I've just got my answer.
01:40There are five different answers about shipping for this item. Methods of
01:43shipping and how long it will take.
01:45If I bought this item today, it would arrive between the fourth and the 13th of December.
01:49But there is also local pickup.
01:51Where is it shipped from?
01:52Burbank, California.
01:53Does the seller offer international shipping? Yes, they do.
01:56What countries does the seller ship to?
01:58Well, this seller ships anywhere in the world.
02:01How much does it costs to ship to my country?
02:03Well, I can click here and find out the answer.
02:05There is also any other number of questions that you might have. How do you pay for an item?
02:09This seller offers payment by PayPal.
02:12Yes, I can pay for this with an eBay gift card.
02:14There are a lot of different options here about the things like returns.
02:18The specific item does not allow returns.
02:20So if I still want to contact the seller, at this point I can click on No.
02:25I still want to contact the seller, and I click Continue, and then I will punch
02:28in another question here.
02:30Since I don't know who graded the coin and it says it has been graded, I am
02:34going to go ahead and ask this question.
02:35"What grading company graded this coin?
02:40What is the serial number of that grading?"
02:45You can get pretty specific with your questions.
02:47Since I want to get a copy of the actual e-mail I am sending to the seller for
02:51my permanent record and I want it to go into my Inbox,
02:54I can check this option here. And there is a thing that's a security code or
02:58similar to a thing called a CAPTCHA, which prevents automated computers from
03:02entering in questions.
03:03So I am going to go ahead and fill in the security question and click on the Send option.
03:07Now my message was sent, and I can wait for a response back from the actual seller.
03:12If I go to my eBay and go into my Messages section, when I get a response, I'll
03:16either get it in my inbox on my regular e-mail, or I will see a message come
03:20into my inbox here on my eBay under All Messages.
03:23This seller is usually going to be very happy to answer any questions you
03:26have about the item--
03:27that's assuming there is a seller that wants to move merchandise. And even if it
03:30takes them a little bit of time to get back to you, as long as there is time
03:33before the end of the listing, it's a great way to find out more about the item
03:37that you are interested in buying. If you are not 100% sure, ask the question first before you bid.
03:41That way you can make sure you get exactly what you expected.

Sharing a listing page with someone else
00:00Sometimes when you're on eBay, you might see something that would be great for a
00:03loved one, or you want share it with a friend.
00:06Or maybe you just need a second opinion about the condition or the
00:10authenticity of something.
00:11You can use the option on eBay to share that information with somebody else in different ways.
00:16Just by simply clicking a few buttons on the web site, you can be sharing
00:19product listing information in no time at all.
00:22If you go to the listing, you'll see this option over here, and you'll see an
00:25option to print. If you click on that option,
00:27you'll be able to print out the listing page.
00:29You can include the listing summary, a seller's description, if you want to,
00:33and the photographs of the listing, and then go ahead and print it out by clicking here.
00:37Or, if you want to report in item that has let's say some information in it that
00:42you think is a violation of eBay policy, you can report the item to eBay, which
00:46is another way to share information. And then you have these links over here
00:49which are called Share.
00:50I'm going to start backwards and show you that if you are a Twitter user,
00:54you can go ahead and share this information on your Twitter account if you click here.
00:58Or if you're a big Facebook social networking guru, you can use the icon
01:03for Facebook right here and share the information on this eBay listing on your Facebook.
01:07You know, I'm a little old school, and I think social networking is a great way to share
01:10information about other people and talk to each other, but I tend to prefer a
01:14more personal approach to sharing eBay auction information,
01:17so I use e-mail--that's the envelope.
01:19You'll see this envelope right here.
01:20So if you click on the envelope, you can go ahead and put in an e-mail address,
01:24and you can share this information with anybody, anywhere in the world.
01:27So I am going to go ahead and type in an e-mail address.
01:29So I am going to share this eBay auction.
01:31I can go ahead and just leave in this generic text that eBay fills in, or I can
01:35delete that, and I can send a personal message.
01:38So, "I wanted to purchase this coin.
01:43It looks like a good value, would you review the price including shipping and
01:52let me know if this is a good buy. Regards, Chris."
01:58So I went ahead and typed in a little message here, and I can go ahead and copy
02:02me on this e-mail, which means I'll get a copy to my inbox, my own e-mail box.
02:06Then I can click send message, and then just as simple as that, a copy of this
02:10eBay listing has been sent to borntodeal@gmail.com.
02:13By sharing a listing, you can help friends find what they're looking for.
02:17Maybe you can get a second opinion about something if you're not sure about the
02:20condition or the authenticity.
02:22Or maybe you're just giving a very strong hint to someone special that you want
02:27something for a gift.
02:28Whatever your reason for using this share option, I'm sure you'll find this a
02:31very valuable feature that you'll use over and over again on eBay.

6. Making a Purchase
Placing a bid
00:01Well, now you have an eBay profile, a PayPal account, you know how to search
00:05items and browse them on eBay, you know how to review a listing and make sure
00:09you're getting exactly what you want from an eBay listing.
00:12Now, I want to take a look at actually placing a bid on an item.
00:15I have an item right here, and I'd like to show you how to place a bid on this item.
00:19This is a Native American sterling needlepoint pin, and you can see here that
00:24it currently has one bid and 22 minutes left in the listing. And then you'll see
00:28here eBay is telling me that I have to enter a bid of $25.45 or more.
00:34So you might ask the question, well, why that odd number?
00:37Why do I have to bid that number?
00:38Well, let me show you the reason.
00:40So if I go over to the eBay Help System, and I look at Help Topics, I can look
00:45up a thing called bid increment.
00:49So the bid increment is the minimum amount above the current high bid that I
00:54have to place in order to place another bid.
00:57So if I wanted to place a bid on this listing and the listing is currently
01:00under $25, I have to bid at least $0.50 more than the current bid, and you can
01:05see from this chart--which we've talked about in a prior movie--that you've got a
01:08break down depending on the actual current bid price that it's at.
01:13You have to place a minimum bid over that price.
01:15The reason for this is pretty simple.
01:17If you're bidding on a higher ticket item, let's say a $1,000 item, it would be
01:21kind of a petty bidding war if people are bidding a penny more than the next person.
01:25So in order to prevent this crazy bidding, eBay requires a minimum amount
01:29above the current bid.
01:31So if it's $1,000, you have to bid $25 on top of a current high bid.
01:35So this bid increment is something you can always look at on eBay, and eBay
01:39tells you what it is.
01:40So I am going to go ahead and place a bid, and since it says I have to bid
01:43$25.45, I am going to go ahead and bid $25.45, and I am going to go ahead
01:49and click Place bid. I will sign in.
01:54eBay allows you to stay signed in, and the next time you place a bid you won't
01:57have to keep signing in again over and over again.
02:00But by being signed in, all people who place bids on items have to be signed into
02:04the eBay site and have to be an eBay member.
02:08Then you get a confirmation.
02:09At this point in the confirmation, you have a chance to review your bid and the
02:13item you're bidding on, the shipping costs, and the method of payment, and then
02:17eBay reminds you that this item qualifies for a special eBay buyer protection
02:21program to guarantee the purchase that you're making with the seller.
02:25Then you click on Confirm Bid.
02:27Now it says it's almost over, and you're currently the highest bidder.
02:30You can see here that eBay has made me the high bidder.
02:33I am now the current high bidder on the item, and it says here I can also
02:36enter my maximum bid.
02:38Now, let's talk a little bit about that.
02:40Entering your highest maximum bid ensures that you have the best possible chance of winning.
02:45So let's go to the eBay Help System, and I am going to go ahead and find out a
02:49little bit more about proxy bidding, and I'll show you how that works.
02:53So bidding basically is done automatically by eBay's system, and eBay places the
02:57highest bid that you've entered incrementally using the bid increment.
03:01So, how this works:
03:03When you place a bid, you've entered the most you're willing to pay for an item.
03:06The seller and other bidders don't know the secret amount; it's your maximum amount.
03:10So if you bid $100 on the item that we just looked at,
03:13eBay doesn't automatically bid $100 for you.
03:15If there's no other competition bidding on the item, you're going to pay as
03:19little as possible because eBay only adds the bid increment which we talked
03:23about earlier on top of the current high bidder.
03:26So the person that you're bidding against may be bidding 25, and in this case the
03:31bid increment might be a dollar, so you're only going to be bidding $26.
03:36So you can learn more about how proxy bidding works. And up to the very end of
03:39the listing right towards the end, eBay will keep adding to the high bid, the
03:43bid increment over the under bidder--the person bidding under you--if they keep bidding up.
03:48But you'll never pay more than the bid increment over the under bidder unless
03:52you're outbid, in which case you lose.
03:55So that's how the proxy bidding system works.
03:57I suggest you take a look at that in the eBay help system and learn how the ins
04:01and out of automatic bidding work on the eBay system.
04:04So bidding is done automatically by eBay's system.
04:08You can see here there is a button to set your maximum bid.
04:11For example, this auction is currently a $25, but I'm willing to spend $50.
04:16I could enter $50 as my maximum bid.
04:19eBay will then keep automatically re-bidding up to this maximum bid amount to
04:23keep me ahead of the competition.
04:25When I put in my maximum bid, it will not automatically bid that full amount;
04:29eBay will automatically re-bid the next highest bid increment if someone
04:34tries to outbid me.
04:35So if I did put in that maximum bid, anyone else looking at this auction would
04:39see a bid of $25.95 because that's the next highest bid increment.
04:44If somebody put in a higher bid, eBay would automatically re-bid for me, but if
04:49someone bids over $50, they'll beat me.
04:51So at this point if I think there's a possibility I might get outbid, I can
04:55always enter a higher maximum bid here and go ahead and place my absolute
04:59highest bid I am willing to pay for this item.
05:01There is also a button here that says Check Your Status, so you can see where
05:04you are in the current bid process.
05:07So now that I've placed the bid, I can see the bid history right here, and I can
05:11see that I might be the high bidder, and there is also an under bidder here,
05:13somebody bidding against me.
05:15They've entered $25 in, and I have the bid increment of 50 cents over, so I am
05:19bidding $25.45; that's 50 cents over $24.95.
05:23There's only 17 minutes left in the listing, and as soon as the end of the
05:27listing occurs and if I am the high bidder, I'll be the winner.
05:30That's it, that's all you have to do to bid on an auction-style listing on eBay.
05:34Now that you've placed your bid, you will probably want to see if you get outbid
05:37and continue checking up on the status of the listing.
05:40So we'll go into more detail on that in the rest of this chapter.

Monitoring your bids
00:00Now once you've placed bids, you can monitor your bids and see the progress
00:05of how eBay is handling your proxy bids for you, and determine if you're still the high bidder.
00:10So to do that we are going to go to My eBay, and we are going to go ahead and
00:14look at the Bids/Offers section.
00:16So on My eBay, I can see the bid that I placed for the sterling needlepoint pin,
00:21I can see that there are two bids, and I'm still the high bidder. It's in green.
00:24And then I can see there are 14 minutes left.
00:26There are also some more actions that I can take right here in the More actions button.
00:30So you'll see here that items that I'm winning are separately filtered.
00:33If I click here, I can see the items that I'm winning, and if I get outbid on
00:36something, I have another filter I can use to look at those items.
00:39Then I can click More actions.
00:41I can increase my maximum bid.
00:44And this is pretty neat:
00:45if you want to get instant message alerts and be notified at the very last
00:48minute about being outbid, you can also subscribe to some instant message alerts as well.
00:53But I'm going to go back and take a look here.
00:55Any items that I've bid on, any items that I've been outbid on, all of that
00:59information will show up in my eBay under this section.
01:02You can continue to use the My eBay console as a convenient tool for reviewing
01:06and managing your bids and your best offers that you've made on items.
01:10And it's a great way to stay organized with your bidding activity.

Rebidding
00:01Because an auction-style listing may have more than one bidder, and really
00:04popular listings do, it's possible that you may become outbid.
00:08On very popular items, it's very likely that you will,
00:11so you may want to recall that the auction-style listing utilizes a proxy
00:16bidding system, which means that eBay keeps your highest bid amount secret and
00:20re-bids for you until you're no longer the high bidder, or until the listing ends
00:25with you as the winner.
00:26Let's see the simple process of re-bidding.
00:28First of all, I've been outbid on this item, and you can see I received an
00:32e-mail from eBay warning me that I've been outbid on the item.
00:35So my personal preference is that I never choose to click on links in e-mails
00:40because there are so many people out there trying to send out phishing e-mails
00:43in order to capture my personal information.
00:46It may not actually be eBay that's sending me the e-mail.
00:48It may be a phishing e-mail sent by a third party trying to acquire my personal
00:53information without my permission.
00:55So we are going to cover that more later on during this course, and we will be
00:58discussing marketplace safety and how to protect yourself, and we'll get into
01:02that in more detail for you.
01:04So I generally go to my eBay, and I go to the My eBay section, like we discussed
01:08before--how to pick up bids and offers, which is here on the left side on My
01:12eBay--and you can see that I've been outbid on this item.
01:15And then eBay provides me with a way to increase my max bid by clicking right
01:19here. Or if I want to look at the listing page itself, and I want to place the
01:24bid here, I can enter in a bid amount. Or I can simply click this button here.
01:30By clicking that button there, I can then enter in the information for my high bid.
01:33So I am going to go ahead and place the bid for $28, and then I'll confirm my bid.
01:39So it's pretty simple to re-bid on an item when you've been outbid;
01:43you can go to My eBay, and you can see it there, and you can click on the link
01:46there, you can go back to the listing page, you can click the link there.
01:49But be sure when you're placing bids and re-bidding, you don't let your emotions
01:54run wild, and be sure you keep your high bid in perspective.
01:57Remember, you've researched completed listings on eBay, and you've gotten a
02:00really good idea what the value of an item is before you've purchased it.
02:05So be sure to keep it at a level where you are comfortable.
02:06And as a reminder, to make sure that you are as safe as possible, I strongly
02:11recommend that you don't click links in e-mails that you've received.
02:14Be sure you go directly to eBay and look up the listings in the My eBay section.

Sniping
00:00Auction sniping has been very popular since the first online auction appeared on the Internet.
00:06Placing a winning bid at the last possible moment, even seconds before the
00:10listing ends, is considered sniping; that's where you allow virtually no time for
00:14another bidder to come in and place a high bid above you.
00:18This can be done manually by sitting at your computer until the very final
00:22moments before a listing ends on eBay, or you can use automated software, or web
00:26site services to do this for you without the need to baby-sit the situation.
00:31Sniping an auction is legal in the United States according to
00:34Wikipedia contributors.
00:36There are many free and paid programs available, both as desktop software as well
00:41as online services, to allow you to register and snipe listings.
00:46Sniping helps reduce the bidding war because eBay sends an automated e-mail to
00:50each user to let them know when they've been outbid, and a natural emotional
00:54response is why people get back into the game and bid again, just to be the high
00:58bidder on an auction.
00:59Non-sniping bidders sometimes object to sniping, claiming it may be unfair to
01:04enter automated bids through third-party computer systems.
01:07However, with eBay's proxy bidding system, the bidder is given the fair
01:11opportunity to enter the amount
01:12they'd be willing to pay for any item, and therefore they do have a fair chance
01:16to win if they've entered their true maximum bid.
01:20You can find sniping software and services online by using your favorite search
01:24engine, such as Google, and entering the search term "eBay sniping."
01:29It's generally believed that online services are more reliable than desktop
01:33sniping software because the software systems are run on a web site, when a web
01:37site is generally more likely to have reliable servers that might be quicker and
01:42less prone to failing to enter your bid.
01:44Studies have shown that winning bidders are more likely to have placed a single
01:48bid late in the auction than by placing many bids as the auction progresses.
01:52For seasoned buyers who wish to gain the best competitive advantage possible,
01:56sniping can present a great chance of getting in at the last seconds of the
02:00bidding on items that are more likely to have fierce competition.

Making offers and Purchasing using the Buy It Now option
00:01We've been looking at bidding, and you've probably noticed the Buy It Now
00:04option on some listings.
00:06Some eBay listings are both an auction-style listing and a Buy It Now, and some
00:11have only one feature or the other.
00:13Some listings even allow you to negotiate with the seller using a feature
00:17called Best Offer, where you can make an offer price for an amount lower than the asking price.
00:22I've gone on eBay and I've pulled up a few random listings from sellers I
00:26don't know--these are just random listings I pulled up on eBay--and we are going
00:30to go through the process of reviewing Buy It Now and that Buy It Now feature.
00:34The first listing is for postcard, 1960s and 70s postcard from Falls Church,
00:39Virginia, my hometown where I grew up when I was a kid.
00:42You can see on this listing the Buy It Now feature is here.
00:45If I wanted to purchase this item, I would simply click Buy It Now, and I
00:49would commit to buy. It's that simple.
00:52Once I've purchased the item, I can go ahead and click Pay Now and go through
00:55the PayPal payment process, which we cover in this course.
00:58But also when you've purchased an item, it will show up on My eBay.
01:01So once you've purchased a Buy It Now listing, it'll go down to items that
01:05you've won and purchased.
01:06So anytime you use Buy It Now, you will also see it here on your eBay
01:10account under My eBay.
01:12Let's go to the second item, which is also a postcard from Columbus, Ohio, which
01:16is actually where I was born.
01:17You will see a listing here for this postcard where you can buy the postcard, or
01:21you can make an offer.
01:23Make Offer is best offer.
01:24That's the feature on eBay. And if you make an offer, you can make an offer for a
01:28price lower than the asking price.
01:29It's a binding agreement, so we are going to talk a little bit more in detail
01:33about these features, but I want to show you how it works.
01:35So if you place an offer, you want to maybe make an offer for a dollar,
01:39you can go ahead and review your offer, and then you go ahead and submit it.
01:43Once you have submitted the offer, it's reviewed by the seller, and you'll also
01:46be able to see, over here in My eBay, all the listings that you've made offers on.
01:51So if you've made an offer on an item, you'll see in the My eBay interface over
01:55here on the left-hand side that you have the ability to look at bids and offers.
01:59If you click on Bids and Offers, you can see in here any listing that
02:02you've made an offer on.
02:04I have a pending offer here, and that's the offer I just made.
02:06It shows the current pending best offer.
02:09It also shows me in this filter any offers that I've made that have been
02:12declined or accepted. So you can see this is a pending best offer, a declined
02:16offer, and expired offers.
02:18So if an offer is accepted, I will see that here in the filter, but I'll
02:22also see any offers that have been turned down. So in this case I made an
02:25offer earlier for this particular cable, and the computer cable offer was
02:30declined, unfortunately.
02:31If the seller doesn't get back to me, an offer will expire, and I will see that
02:34it's in my section called Expired Best Offers.
02:37Let's go to this last listing, and you'll see that you can bid on this item--
02:40this is an auction-style listing--
02:42you can place a bid, or you can use Buy It Now.
02:46So just as we did earlier, if I wanted to purchase this item, I would simply
02:49click Buy It Now and commit to purchase it.
02:52Some considerations about Buy It Now:
02:54First of all, there is no competitive bidding.
02:57Sellers can list one or multiple quantities of the item for sale.
03:01Some sellers add the option of the auction-style listing and the Buy It Now
03:05together, which we've reviewed, and that will remain available on the auction
03:08style listing until the reserve is met, if there is one--or if there is no
03:13reserve, when the first bid has been placed on the auction.
03:17If there is only one quantity available, the listing will end after you use
03:20the Buy It Now feature.
03:22Some sellers may choose to require immediate payment after you use the Buy It
03:25Now, which means that the listing will only come to an end once you've gone into
03:29PayPal and actually paid for the item.
03:32Let's talk a little bit more about negotiation.
03:35You can negotiate prices with the seller by using the offer feature on the listing.
03:39It's called Make Offer.
03:40This is the best offer option that's available on some listings.
03:44The seller can accept the offer, decline the offer, or make a counter offer.
03:49If the offer is accepted, it's a binding agreement with the seller.
03:53That means you have to complete the transaction.
03:55You can search items in Advanced search that have Best Offer features.
03:59So if I was looking for a Falls Church postcard, I would be able to go down
04:04in the Advanced search and look for listings that have the Best Offer
04:08feature, right here.
04:10The offer that you make with Best Offer is valid for 48 hours, or until the
04:14listing ends, whichever comes first.
04:16If the seller does not respond, then the offer expires.
04:20On most listings, you can make up to three offers:
04:23that includes expired offers or declined offers, as well as retracted offers.
04:27So if you make an offer and retract it, all those count towards the three Best Offer limits.
04:32If there is no Make Offer option, it is a direct violation of eBay policy to
04:36contact the seller to negotiate a different price than the terms on the listing.
04:41You can use Buy It Now to guarantee a price on an item, but you also have the
04:45choice of using Best Offer where available on a listing to bring that fixed
04:49price down to your dream-world price.
04:52Best Offer is almost like the reverse of an auction-style listing.
04:55So now we've covered the process of using Buy It Now on a listing on eBay, and
04:59then the next step would be actually paying for our purchase.

Paying
00:01Once you've won an auction or purchased a Buy It Now item on eBay, you'll need
00:04to make payment on that item.
00:06Most sellers really appreciate prompt payment, and they'll ship your item out
00:10after receiving that payment.
00:12The majority of sellers use the default payment flow options on eBay, and
00:16that'll be what you normally see on eBay, and in this particular movie.
00:20Some sellers set up a custom card or a checkout process that takes you to their
00:25own web site, and it allows you to pay with PayPal. Or, it might allow you to
00:29pay with a variety of different payment options that are offered at the
00:32discretion of that seller.
00:34That's totally up to them, and you may find that some sellers accept all
00:38major credit cards, as well as checks, money orders, or perhaps other methods of payment, too.
00:44It's really between you and the seller, so long as the terms of the original sale
00:47are approved by both parties.
00:50Make sure that you're using a method of payment that the seller accepts, and be
00:53sure that you're in agreement with the method of payment--
00:56it was something that was advertised in the original listing.
00:58So I'm going to take you over to my Inbox here on my e-mail, and you'll see that
01:02I've received a notification that I successfully won this sterling silver pin.
01:07The seller is asking me to make a payment on the item right now.
01:10You can see a total, and you have all the information about the purchase here in your e-mail.
01:15You may recall previously I've talked about safety.
01:18Marketplace safety is really important to me.
01:20There is always the potential out there for things that are called phishing
01:24scams, or people that will send you fraudulent e-mails trying to get your
01:28personal information.
01:29Even though an e-mail might look exactly like a real eBay e-mail,
01:33I generally prefer to go directly to the eBay web site when I'm using my PayPal
01:39account or I'm logging in with username and a password.
01:42So I'm going to flip over to eBay, and I'm going to go to My eBay.
01:45I'm going to go down to the items that I've won and purchased.
01:48You'll notice that I'm already signed in to the eBay site, which I've done previously.
01:52Then you'll see over here in my Summary page there is a whole bunch of different
01:56options and things that you'll see.
01:57But the first thing you'll notice is Buying Reminders.
02:00There is a section called Buying Reminders.
02:02It says you need to pay for one item, and you also need to leave feedback for
02:06one item, and that actually is summarized here at the bottom.
02:08You'll see it's the very same item that I purchased.
02:11I have a couple of different options.
02:12I can pay now with this link right here, or I can click More actions, and I
02:16have different choices.
02:17I can leave feedback.
02:19I can view the order details.
02:21I can contact the seller.
02:22If perhaps there is something wrong with the transaction, I want to contact
02:25them, I can do that.
02:27I can go ahead and add notes to my sale and so forth.
02:29If I really want to, I can add my comments and things like.
02:32So what I'm going to do right now,
02:34I do want to make a payment on this item,
02:36but I also want to take a look at the transaction.
02:38So I'm going to go ahead and click on the link here, which brings me right to Pay now option.
02:43It provides me with a summary of the actual order, and then I can see the
02:47full description here.
02:49This brings me back to the eBay listing page.
02:52You'll see on the listing page the same Pay now option that we had before.
02:56I'm going to go ahead and take a look at the page here and notice that I can
02:59change my shipping address.
03:00So, if before I make the payment, I want to send out an item as a gift to somebody else,
03:06if the seller will agree, I can change the shipping address to make it a gift.
03:10I can then request a total from the seller.
03:12Some sellers maybe have forgotten to put the shipping information on the listing.
03:16This seller does give the shipping information.
03:18But sometimes sellers will not put that information on the listing.
03:21You may need to request the total from the seller.
03:22So you have the option to do that as well. Or you might want to add a message.
03:26So I'm going to go ahead and add a message here.
03:28"Please include a copy of my invoice or eBay number to help me identify this
03:40item when I receive it."
03:44Then I can go ahead and save my little message that I've put in there.
03:47That will definitely be included when I place the order and pay for it.
03:50Also, you'll see here some additional messaging from eBay about charity.
03:53They're asking if you'll donate a dollar to charity.
03:55So I'm just going to do that.
03:57If you had a gift card from eBay, like a gift card that somebody has given you,
04:01you can use this section to apply that gift card right now.
04:05eBay has many different promotions and gift cards that people can purchase, and
04:09you have the ability to go ahead and add that code right here.
04:12Then you click Continue with PayPal.
04:14Not all sellers only offer PayPal as a method of payment.
04:18If this seller offered multiple methods of payment, you would have seen a
04:22completely different type of flow:
04:24You might have options for checks.
04:26You might have options for credit cards and things like that.
04:28I'm going to go ahead and sign in now with my PayPal password.
04:31Now you'll see her that because I've previously paid for items on eBay, my
04:36e-mail address for PayPal is already in there.
04:39Then I only need to enter my password.
04:41There are other options, too.
04:42There is a service called Bill Me Later, which you can take a look at.
04:45If you want to learn more about it, you're more than welcome to check in and
04:48look at what that service is all about.
04:50That's another service offered through PayPal.
04:53Then I'm going to log in to my PayPal account.
04:56In the next screen, I have the option to confirm my payment.
04:59I'm going to take a moment, because I want to make sure everything I've done is
05:03absolutely correct, to review all the information I've entered.
05:07I'm going to review my shipping address.
05:09I'm going to review the item I've purchased, the shipping cost, the delivery date.
05:12My note that I made earlier, here it is.
05:14You can see that I've put that note in.
05:16The total cost, including the shipping charges, everything that I needed to know
05:20before I click the Confirm Payment option.
05:22Then I'll click Confirm.
05:26Then you'll see a page that says, "Thank you for your payment."
05:29A confirmation will be presented to you showing the amount you've paid and
05:33letting you know that you've also made the donation.
05:35Now you can see here I made a separate donation to MissionFish through my
05:37PayPal account as well.
05:39Then it tells me a summary of my order.
05:41Plus, I can view my order details.
05:43If I need to print a receipt, I can do that, too.
05:45Once I'm here in this page, I can then click on the Printer option.
05:49If I need a receipt from my records, which a lot of people like to have
05:52hard copies and print things out, then you can go ahead and print this page right here.
05:56Now that you've paid for your first item, the seller can ship out your merchandise.
06:01That's all there is to it.
06:02You've learned how to bid on items, and you've learned how to pay for them on eBay.
06:06You're now on your way to becoming a true eBay buying expert.

Using the Shopping Cart feature
00:00There's a shopping cart icon that appears in the top of most of eBay's pages.
00:05This shopping cart, just like on most e -commerce websites, allows you to add
00:09items from one or even multiple sellers and keep them all organized in 1 handy
00:14place so you can pay for them all at once.
00:17This prevents you from having to make multiple purchases and pay for them individually.
00:22Let's take a look at the shopping cart.
00:24I have one item in the cart.
00:25You can see there's a 1 there.
00:26If I click on the shopping cart link I'll see the one item that's in my cart,
00:31which is a Blu-Ray player that I searched for and added to my cart earlier.
00:35You can change the shipping address if you want to.
00:37For example, if you want to ship this as a gift to someone else you can put
00:40their shipping information in here.
00:43You can also continue shopping and look for other items if you want to.
00:46You can go ahead and continue shopping here.
00:48Change the quantity if you want or you can remove this item from the
00:52shopping cart altogether.
00:54Now, once you've removed an item it's no longer available in the cart, but let's
00:58say you want to add it back to the cart and save it for a later time.
01:01Maybe you haven't decided to purchase it.
01:03You can click the Save for later option, which means that it'll show up right
01:07below the items in your cart and you can go ahead and add it back to the cart at a later time.
01:12Now I'm going to take some time to show you step-by-step how to use the
01:16shopping cart system.
01:17So I've taken the time to look up a few items that I was interested in, and I put them on my watchlist.
01:23So they've been bookmarked already.
01:24I have them in my watch list and I'm interested in buying them.
01:27These are items that I really want to buy and I actually want to purchase them.
01:30So I'm going show them to you step-by-step and show you how to go ahead and make a purchase.
01:35So I'll take a look at the first item, which is I want to add this to my cart.
01:38It's a charger for an iPhone.
01:40I actually have iPhone and I'd like to get a new charger.
01:43I can go ahead and add this to the cart, which I'll do right now, and then I can
01:47continue shopping for other things.
01:49This is now sitting in my cart and I can see up at the top you'll see that
01:53there's one item in my cart.
01:55Then I'll go back to My eBay and I'll take a look at the other items in my watchlist.
01:59And you'll see here that I have a replacement battery in my watchlist I'd like to purchase.
02:04And I want to purchase this battery.
02:06This is a neat thing because it's not only a battery for an iPhone, it also has
02:09the tools to make the change of the battery, which is really great, and can you
02:14believe it's only $3.99, which I think is terrific.
02:17I'm going to go ahead and just check over this and make sure it's exactly what I need.
02:20Yes, it's an iPhone 3GS.
02:22That's what I have.
02:23Plus it comes with a battery and the screwdriver and the necessary tools for
02:27changing the battery. That's good.
02:29The seller has good feedback, so I'll go ahead and add this to my cart as well.
02:34Now you see the two items that I've gone ahead and put in the cart are showing
02:38up on my shopping cart.
02:40I also have the saved item that I saved earlier, which is the Blu-Ray player.
02:43That won't be included in this purchase.
02:45The two items from two different sellers have been added to the cart and my total is $6.84.
02:51It just so happens that the things that I purchased had free shipping.
02:55Now, if they didn't have free shipping, you'd see the shipping cost indicated as well.
02:59I can go ahead and proceed to check out by clicking here.
03:03And you'll have a checkout screen.
03:04You can review your purchases, you can still make changes if you want to take
03:08something out of your cart, redeem a gift certificate that you've received from
03:11someone or a coupon from eBay, and you can go ahead and click Continue.
03:15Now you'll be presented with your PayPal login screen.
03:19You need to login to your PayPal account and enter in your password.
03:23If you don't have a PayPal account, you still want a complete the purchase,
03:27you can go to the link below that says Don't have a PayPal account, and you'll
03:31be presented with the information that you need to put in your credit card information.
03:35You can put in your credit card or debt card information here and your shipping
03:39information and billing information and then you can go ahead and have an item
03:42shipped to you without a PayPal account.
03:44I have a PayPal accounts so I'm going to click the first option again.
03:47And I'm going to complete my purchase with my PayPal account.
03:51Once I log into PayPal I'll be presented with a payment confirmation screen.
03:54Then I click Continue.
03:58Here's the confirmation screen.
03:59And I can go ahead and confirm my payment.
04:01First before I do that I'm going to take one last look at everything I've done
04:05and make sure that the amount that's being debited from my PayPal balance is
04:09exactly what I expected, $6.84.
04:11And I can go ahead and review it.
04:14If I want to I can print this page for my records.
04:17Then I can confirm the payment. And there you go.
04:21The purchase is complete.
04:23The neat thing is I've made two separate purchases in one single action, and
04:28from two different sellers.
04:30I'm going to go back to My eBay and I'll take a look at the items I've purchased
04:34and what I'll do is I'll go to the eBay link here and I'll scroll down and then
04:39I'll look at my purchase history.
04:42Then I'll scroll through here and I'll see items that I've purchased.
04:45The checkout is complete on them and the payment's been made.
04:48And I'll be waiting to receive them in the mail.
04:50That's the next step.
04:51A few important things to consider are that items can only be added to your cart
04:57if they're listed in US dollars and any items that are listed in other
05:01currencies can't be added to your cart for checkout at this time.
05:05You can purchase them separately though.
05:07You don't actually own the item that you're purchasing until you completely
05:10finish the checkout process and pay for them.
05:14Fixed price items will always remain available to any other eBay member until
05:18you've paid for them even if you park them into your cart.
05:21If too much time elapses from the time you put an item in your cart until
05:25you actually pay for it, you may receive the message that the item is no longer available.
05:30This could be because the seller ended the listing in the meantime or someone
05:33else has purchased it on eBay.
05:35Shipping discounts are automatically applied if the seller has set up
05:38discount rules and you're buying multiple items from a seller who offer
05:42shipping discounts.
05:44eBay is making the shopping experience more efficient by offering a shopping
05:47cart for when you're buying multiple items.
05:49It's faster and easier than ever before to make purchases on eBay using
05:53this handy tool.

7. Using My eBay
Using My eBay and modifying personal information
00:00Purchasing an item isn't the end of the road;
00:02you'll also need convenient tools to manage your eBay experience.
00:06You'll be using the tool called My eBay, and that's a place that you'll be able
00:10to manage your shopping, correspond with sellers and other eBay members, and to
00:14check the status of your purchases.
00:16We've touched a little bit about My eBay a few times during the course,
00:20but I'd really like to take a more in- depth exploration with you about the My
00:24eBay tools and how they can help you.
00:27I'll also talk about what information you can review there and how to make the most of My eBay.
00:32To get to My eBay, you go to the top of the homepage, and you click on the My eBay option.
00:36You'll see a whole lot of great information here.
00:39On the left-hand side, you see links for buyers, lists that you can save, and
00:43for sellers, there is additional links as well.
00:45You'll see buying reminders,
00:47items that you need to pay for, or you've been outbid on, or feedback you need
00:51to leave, or offers you've placed.
00:52You'll see items you're watching, and you'll see items that you're bidding on, as
00:56well as items that you've made offers on, active items that you're selling.
01:00In this case, we're not selling anything.
01:02But over here, if you're a seller, you'll see a summary of all the items
01:04that you're selling.
01:05You'll also have shortcuts to great places to find helpful tools and tips for
01:09eBay, and also an Icon Legend.
01:11The Icon Legend tells you what each of the little icons mean on the eBay site.
01:15So be sure you review these so that when you're looking at My eBay, you
01:18understand what each of the icons mean.
01:20They'll have a significant meaning later when you start looking at the My
01:23eBay page more frequently.
01:24There are links to frequently asked questions and page options as well.
01:28So if you click on any of these page options, you can customize your summary on My eBay.
01:32You'll see these General Settings and Page Options throughout the My eBay session.
01:36You'll be able to set your default view if you're interested in looking at when
01:40you open up the My eBay section, a specific section matters to you the most.
01:45Maybe you want to know items you've won and purchased as your default view
01:48when you open My eBay.
01:50You also can change the filters that are on here and see different facets of My
01:54eBay as the default view.
01:56For example, if I want to see feedback comments or messages, I can go ahead and
02:00increase the number of listings on a page when I'm displaying pages.
02:03I can go ahead and do that, too.
02:05In each of the sections here, I can also color-code things.
02:08So if you look at this little option here on one of these headers, like my Watch
02:12List, I'll be able to customize the view.
02:14So over here if you click Edit, you can change the color of the specific section
02:18of My eBay, like changing this to green, or maybe I want to change it to this
02:22color of light blue, or red, or put it back to the default yellow.
02:26You can change the colors.
02:27You can customize the page.
02:28You can also move these sections up and down.
02:31So, perhaps the Watch List is the most important thing to you on the page.
02:34You might want to move it to the top and have it be at the top of the screen.
02:38You can customize the view, and eBay gives you some default views, like Just the
02:42basics or All of the details.
02:44Or, you can make your own view and select which pieces of information are most
02:49important to you, and then click Apply to save the changes.
02:52Additionally, you can go over to the top of the page here and see the Messages section.
02:57The Messages is where you receive and send messages not only to the other
03:01members on eBay, but also from eBay themselves.
03:04eBay sometimes sends messages to you, whether it'd be general announcements or
03:08messages from other people working at eBay.
03:10There is also an Account section.
03:12I'm going to go into a little bit of detail here because this is a pretty
03:15important part of your My eBay experience.
03:18You have the ability to see a Summary of all of your account information, but
03:21you also have personal information you can change.
03:24I'm going to show you how that works.
03:26If you click on Personal Information, you'll see account information, such as not
03:30only the type of account, but you can change your user ID and password.
03:34You can go ahead and create an About Me page, which is your bio page on eBay.
03:37You also can set a security PIN for when you call into eBay's customer support.
03:42You can do things like change your registered address, your address that's on eBay.
03:47If you want to receive instant message alerts, you can register your Yahoo
03:50account, or your AOL account here.
03:52You can go ahead and receive alerts whenever you're outbid or whenever you've
03:56placed a bid on an item.
03:57I'm going to go back up and look at Addresses.
03:59Addresses is very important for buyers because you may have more than one
04:02address where you receive your merchandise.
04:04You can change the registered address that you have on eBay for receiving
04:07merchandise, but you can also review all of your shipping addresses.
04:11When you link your PayPal account to my eBay, a list of all the PayPal-
04:15associated addresses will show up, and you can change them here.
04:19If you want to add a new address for a gift, if you're maybe shipping a gift, or
04:23additional friends and family, you want to have items sent to them.
04:26You can add their addresses into this section.
04:27Then you can set up communication preferences.
04:30Since you have an instant message service, you also can select which instant
04:34messages you'll be receiving,
04:35plus, format of the messages that you'll be getting.
04:38So when you look at Delivery Options, you can go ahead and change it from
04:41plain text to HTML.
04:43So if you want to receive your e-mails in tidy plain text, maybe you just use a
04:47PDA or something, or a hand-held phone
04:49you want to use for receiving messages. Or if you want to receive the more
04:52visually pleasing HTML messages that eBay provides, you can do that.
04:56You can also control your member-to-member communications,
04:59the communications you receive between members on eBay.
05:03As a buyer, you're going to be interested in looking at your buying activity messages.
05:06You can perhaps receive fewer e-mails from eBay if you don't want to receive a
05:10lot of clutter every time you bid on an item.
05:12Instead of receiving a message each and every time, you can have a Daily Digest
05:16or set it to a Weekly Digest or even a Monthly Digest, so you're not getting
05:20e-mails every time you place a bid.
05:22You might be more interested in getting instant, real-time messaging for items
05:26that you didn't win. Or if you've been outbid, you might want to receive
05:29immediate confirmation of that.
05:31Also, if you check the box for Instant Messaging, you can be told when you're
05:34outbid and place a new bid using your instant message service.
05:37So these preferences are adjustable.
05:39You might want to take a look through all of the different preferences and
05:42decide which changes you'd like to make about your account preferences here.
05:46You can also change site preferences.
05:48So if you want to change the way the eBay site behaves, you have the ability to do that.
05:52There are a lot of different things here that you can study, and you might want
05:55to take some time to go through each and every one of the links on your own time
05:59so you understand what they do.
06:00But just knowing that they're there, that's very helpful.
06:02You can click on the Feedback link, and you can see feedback that you've
06:05received, and you can see feedback that you need to leave for other members on
06:09eBay, and all that information is here in this section.
06:11There are some additional links here, and also you can look at applications that
06:15are third-party applications that are provided through eBay.
06:18If you want to take a look and explore, you can do that on your own time.
06:21But getting to know My eBay can look a little overwhelming at first, because
06:24there is so much information you can garner from this eBay dashboard for
06:28managing all your activities on eBay in one place.
06:31Given time, it will definitely become second nature to you to use My eBay.
06:35It'll be your best friend for staying organized.
06:37This not only helps you with your purchases, but it also helps you with favorite
06:41searches, save seller information, and items that you're watching, plus your
06:45general eBay preferences.
06:47My eBay can also help you find the links you need and the resources you want to
06:51manage all of your eBay activities.

Monitoring items on a watched list
00:00Whenever you're out shopping, and you're thinking of gift ideas, or you're
00:04making purchases, or you're just price- shopping and window-shopping, a lot of
00:08times you use a shopping list.
00:10You organize your thoughts in writing, and you put them down or you jot them down.
00:13In that very same vein, on eBay you can bookmark or watch items on eBay listing
00:19pages, and then you can manage those watched items using the tool My eBay.
00:23You can watch up to 200 items at one time.
00:26This helps you to stay organized and helps you look at items that may be not
00:29ready to buy yet, but perhaps you're interested in looking at them further.
00:32So let's talk about how to bookmark an item.
00:35First of all, your watched item list is available on My eBay using this sublink
00:39right here, but you also need to bookmark items to see them in your watch list.
00:43So I recently was interested in the collectible Peking glass.
00:46It's a type of collectible glass.
00:48So I went on eBay, and I was looking around, and I found some items I was
00:51interested in bookmarking and finding out more about them.
00:54I found this item right here, this Chinese Peking glass figurine of a boy on
00:58water buffalo. It looks like water buffalo, looks likes he is crossing a river, and
01:02the boy is staying dry by staying on top of the water buffalo.
01:05If I click on the listing, and I see it's something I'm interested in, and I
01:08like the terms but maybe I have some more questions about it, or I want to
01:11contact an expert on the subject and find out more about this item,
01:15I can go ahead and add it to my Watch list.
01:17Then you see this indicator at the top of the listing showing that it's been
01:21added to your Watch list.
01:22If I want to see the items that I'm watching, I can immediately go to them
01:26using this link right here, or I can go to My eBay and click on the submenu Watch List.
01:32You'll then see all the items that you're watching,
01:35the items that you've bookmarked previously.
01:37You can see over here a list of the items that you've bookmarked, and you have
01:41the ability to add comments to those items.
01:43Let's say I wanted to add a comment to this pair jeans I am watching, and
01:46I'm looking over here, and I check the box next to it, and I click on the add a note.
01:51I can perhaps put something here such as "Check my waist size first.
01:57I may have added a pound or two."
02:01Then you can click here to save your note.
02:03But if you use the Watch list correctly, and you're keeping track of things,
02:07you'll also be able to quickly go over to the Bid now option.
02:10If you've decided to make the purchase, you can bid on the item, or you can use
02:14the More actions link to see some of the other activities that you will be able
02:18to do on this item, such as viewing the seller's other items, getting instant
02:22message alerts about this listing if something happens like you get outbid, or
02:25something changes about the listing.
02:26Contacting the seller or saving this is as a favorite seller or viewing similar
02:31items, you have all these options here as well.
02:33So you can delete items from your Watch list if you're done watching the item
02:37and let's say you realize you can't afford it.
02:39I really can't afford a $30,000 private dinner with Bill Clinton,
02:43so I am going to go ahead and delete that off of my Watch list.
02:46Wishful thinking, but I don't think I am going to be able to do it.
02:49By watching items you can check back for lower prices, how much time is left on
02:52an auction-style listings, and you'll be able to do better, more organized
02:56shopping on the eBay web site.
02:58You'll be coming back to the screen over and over again to stay organized
03:01with your eBay listings.

Keeping track of bids you have placed
00:00My eBay has some great features that will help you to manage your shopping
00:04experience on the eBay community.
00:06You have already seen a few of these features, so now let's take a look at
00:09checking up on bids you've placed.
00:11Once you've placed a bid, or you've made an offer, you're going to want to see
00:14if you've won, if you were outbid on auction, you received a counteroffer, or
00:19perhaps you may want to see the status of a variety of bidding activities for your eBay account.
00:24Let's walk through and take a look at bids we've placed.
00:27So if you got My eBay and you go to the submenu Bids/Offers, you'll see a filter
00:31of just the listings that you're bidding on, or offers that you've made.
00:35Let's walk through this for a second.
00:36Of course, you'll see on the summary here on the left-hand side,
00:38you have the ability to make these filters drill down into specific categories,
00:43like things you've won and purchased.
00:44Over here you can see bidding activity.
00:47I have the All filter going right now, and I can see here I have a couple of
00:51items in my current bids and offers.
00:53The first item is an item that I bid on that I've been outbid, and you can see
00:56here not only is there this warning in red that says I have been outbid--
00:59there are two bidders--
01:00you also see in red ink here the price of the item which tells me I've been
01:04outbid, which is red. And I have options over here to increase my maximum bid if
01:09I'd like to re-bid. Or there is More actions here in this menu.
01:12I can view the seller's other items.
01:14I can get instant message alerts.
01:17So if any of the bidding activity occurs and I want to be notified on my
01:20instant message, I can receive alerts by setting that up here on eBay.
01:24I can contact the seller if I have other questions about the item.
01:27I can save this seller to my saved sellers list, or I can do something
01:31handy like add a note.
01:33Let's go ahead and do that.
01:34I am going to click on the Add note option, and I am going to say "Perhaps Joe
01:39might want this for his wife, check her ring size."
01:45You can leave notes in the actual bids you are placing, and then those will show
01:48up on the eBay system.
01:50If you want to, you can also add things to lists.
01:53So if you'd like to check this box and click over here, you can create lists.
01:58So there is possible lists that you might be interested in, might include things
02:02like gift lists, "Possible gift for Joe's wife."
02:07You can create a new list, or you can add to an existing list.
02:10I am going to create a new one. And once you've made the list, you've added
02:14the item to it, then you have a way to go back and take a look at these
02:17lists, and you can see them.
02:19The idea behind the list that you have is you can organize a number of listings--
02:23perhaps you only want to buy one, but you might have four or five different
02:27possible gifts you might be buying-- and you can track which ones you're winning
02:30on and which ones you aren't winning the bid on.
02:33Maybe you only have enough money to buy one gift, and you don't want buy multiples,
02:36so you have a way to track that there.
02:38So this is how this works. Items that you've been on and won will also be
02:43viewable here as well. But if we go back to Bids and Offers, we can scroll down
02:47a little bit further.
02:48You can see that I've made a best offer on this computer monitor cable, and you
02:52can see that currently I'm waiting for response in that offer.
02:54If you click over here, you can see pending best offers. That's the item that I have listed.
02:59If an offer was declined by the seller--
03:01I made an offer, and it was declined-- perhaps I want to re-bid and make another offer.
03:05I would see that in this filter right here.
03:07If I placed an offer and the seller didn't respond, it would expire, and I could
03:11see it here as well.
03:12There are also other additional details here.
03:14You can view your offer details if you want to click on this, and you may recall
03:18in a prior movie I said click the right mouse button then open a new tab if you
03:22want to click on links;
03:23that way you don't have to leave the page you're on.
03:25You can see offer details here,
03:27the offer that I made earlier.
03:29Then you have the More actions option.
03:30So you can go ahead and use the Buy It Now feature.
03:33Perhaps I've wheeled and deal and the seller didn't bite on my offer, and I just
03:37want to place an order and purchase it.
03:38My time is running out, and I've got buy it.
03:40I go ahead and place Buy It Now.
03:42You can also go through any one of these additional links and use the links here
03:45to add notes or bookmark the seller.
03:47Using these features will make it easier for you to keep up with the items
03:51you're in the process of purchasing.
03:52When you're managing a small number of bids, it's not going to require much
03:56thought and organization. But as you're buying activities become more frequent
04:00and complex, you will definitely appreciate the ability to quickly stop in to my
04:04eBay and see your bidding activity, the offers that you have been making, and
04:08where you stand in terms of winning or losing on an eBay auction item.
04:12I'm hoping you are finding this interesting and fun, because I love to buy items
04:15on eBay, and I always get a thrill to see what I've won.

Reviewing items you have purchased
00:00When you purchase an item, eBay keeps a record of that purchase.
00:03This record can be easily and conveniently accessed through the My eBay page.
00:08This will be especially useful when you want to compare prices, compare sellers,
00:12or if you want a virtual receipt for your purchase.
00:15To access the items you've purchased, go to My eBay and go to Won/Purchased.
00:20You'll be taken to this view.
00:22In this view, you'll see, at the very top, Cases.
00:24Now these are any cases that you may have opened with eBay to resolve a
00:28challenge with the seller.
00:29So, for example, if you haven't received an item, you might open a case saying, I
00:33haven't received merchandise.
00:34Or, if the item is not as described, you might open a case for that.
00:38I generally have great experience with sellers, and I have almost never had an
00:42issue with receiving an item,
00:44so I generally don't have cases.
00:45That's why my cases section is empty.
00:47You'll see Buying Reminders right here, which reminds me that I have to pay for an item.
00:52I have an item that needs to be paid for, and that I also have two items
00:55that need feedback.
00:56If I scroll down, I can also see the different filters of items I've won and
01:00purchased: the very first one being all the items, and I can see a list here,
01:04also, items that need to be paid.
01:06So I have an item that I haven't paid for by did purchase it eBay, and you can
01:10see that I need to make payment on that item.
01:12Items that have been shipped.
01:13So here's a seller that's sold me a pen, and the sterling pen has been shipped out.
01:18Here is the tracking number for the item.
01:20It also gives me the estimated delivery date, and I put little note here to
01:24remind myself that I needed to buy a gift box for that item.
01:27You can see that the item has been paid for with PayPal on November 30, and the
01:31seller has shipped the item out.
01:33Plus, the seller left me positive feedback.
01:36All that information can be garnered right here with these little icons that you see here.
01:41Over here I can leave feedback with this button, or there is More actions
01:44available, including reviewing the order details, contacting the seller,
01:48resolving a problem with the seller, viewing my PayPal payment.
01:52If I perhaps marked the item as paid, let's say I intended to mail a check, but
01:56I forgot to, or I was going to pay, but I didn't,
01:59I can unmark the payment as sent.
02:01I can also view other items from the seller, or there are additional options here as well.
02:05Then you can see all the items that need to receive feedbacks.
02:08So if I haven't left feedback, there's a filter for that, too.
02:10So over here you can see the items that have not yet been paid, and I haven't
02:15let feedback for, I can go ahead and add a note.
02:17This is an additional feature that's on eBay.
02:20I can add a note right here," Be sure to give Cody the 2nd protector when it
02:28arrives," because there are two of them.
02:29Then I can save the note, and as you see here, the notes that I make on the
02:33listings are saved along with it.
02:35Now these are not seen by anybody else.
02:36The seller doesn't see them;
02:38they are only seen by me.
02:39Once I've completed a purchase, and I've made it and everything's great and
02:43wonderful, I can go ahead and check here, and I can delete it off my list.
02:47Let's say I am no longer interested in seeing it on my list.
02:49I can take it off of the list as well.
02:50You can go ahead and use this great tool on eBay as a way of organizing your
02:55eBay listing purchases, things that you've won, and reminding yourself when to
02:59pay and when to leave feedback for items that you've won and bought on eBay.

Keeping a list of favorite sellers
00:00My eBay is a terrific place to save and organize your favorite sellers.
00:04I'll review how to save your favorite sellers, and then manage them in my eBay.
00:08When you find sellers whom you trust, it's great to give them a big reward by
00:12throwing them some repeat business.
00:14You can save them as one of your favorite sellers and then help them earn some
00:17more business, and that also allows you to deal with trusted sellers you love.
00:21I have a page here where I've bid on an item and I've been outbid, but
00:25maybe I'd like to save this seller and get back to some of their items and
00:28look at them again.
00:29So what I can do over here is click on this link. On every listing page, you'll
00:33see Save this seller.
00:35You'll see a little note that you can put to yourself.
00:37If for some reason you want to put some notes here, you can say, the seller
00:40specializes in antiques and collectibles.
00:44And then you can go ahead and put that note to yourself.
00:46That will be saved on my eBay as well.
00:48If the seller has an e-mail subscription service--in other words, a place where
00:52they can notify you by e-mail about their upcoming sales and things--you can go
00:57ahead and subscribe to their e-mail subscription, which is right here.
01:00And you can always manage your subscriptions later if you want to take your name
01:03off the list, and then you click Save.
01:06Once you do that, you'll be automatically taken down to the save sellers list on
01:09my eBay, but I'm going to show it to you again anyway.
01:12If you go to My eBay and you scroll down and you go over here to the left-hand
01:16side, you'll see the Saved sellers.
01:18Those are people you've saved as your favorite sellers.
01:21So I'll show you the actual saved sellers, and you can also organize your
01:25sellers A to Z, or you can sort them in different ways if you'd like to.
01:28You can view the sellers' other items, by simply clicking over here. I'm going
01:31to go ahead and right-click and open a new tab and look at the seller's other items.
01:35This seller has 181 items for sale.
01:37And there are more actions as well.
01:39You can contact the seller, or you can delete them from the list, or you can add
01:43additional notes and things like that.
01:44You can also go to Advanced search. And if you're looking for a specific
01:48item, and you only want to search your favorite sellers, you can go ahead and
01:51type in some keywords.
01:52Let's say I am interested in buying something with jade.
01:54Maybe a friend of mine loves jade.
01:56If I scroll down on Advanced search, and I want to just search my favorite
02:01sellers, you can select this option right here and Only search your Saved Sellers list.
02:06Then you click Search, and you'll only see the items for the sellers that you've bookmarked.
02:11You can see here there is a vintage turquoise & jade bead blue silk file bag
02:15purse offered by the same user, mr49now.
02:19This eBay feature is great when you want to buy items frequently or when you
02:22want to save a list of sellers who have discounts on certain products.
02:26You may also find many reasons to save a seller and then even more ways to
02:30manage the sellers with this list.
02:31And you can soon find that you're buying from the same sellers over and over
02:35again and maybe even getting discounts from them. When you make offers with the
02:39sellers you buy from regularly, they might even be more inclined to accept those
02:42offers, because you're a regular customer.
02:44These are all the wonders of using eBay, and this is a great tool on my eBay to
02:48make your life a lot easier when you're trying to buy from people you trust.

Using the message center
00:00You've often heard the adage that communication is the key in many situations.
00:05I'll show you the eBay Message Center, and that's the message center on eBay
00:08where you find a central place where you will receive legitimate eBay messages
00:13from the eBay management and from eBay community members.
00:16Due to the real possibility of fake messages coming to your regular e-mail
00:20address, you can rely on eBay to be a spam-free environment where messages you
00:24receive are real and legitimate, and from actual eBay employees and users.
00:29I recommend that you only communicate with other eBay members through the eBay
00:33system and via this Message Center to avoid any possibility of losing the
00:38valuable protections you'll be receiving by doing business directly on the eBay site.
00:43To get to my messages, you go to the top of the page here, and you go down
00:46to the Message link.
00:48You'll see here a standard interface, very familiar, just like an inbox in an e-mail system.
00:53You've got all your messages here and a filter to show messages only from eBay members.
00:58You also have the filter to show messages From eBay's management, which is right here.
01:03You can then manage the settings for your inbox by clicking here, and I'll
01:07show you what that does.
01:08You can indicate when you first open the inbox if you just want to show messages
01:13from eBay members, which I'm going to select right there.
01:15You can show these columns, the item number, the item name also can be displayed
01:20in your message box, and you can add a signature.
01:22If you want to add a signature to each message that you reply to, you can go
01:26ahead and do that as well.
01:27If you want to put in a phone number to make it easy for people to reach you,
01:30you can do that, too.
01:31And you have the ability to set up an away message.
01:33So if you want to set an away message-- you're going to be gone for holidays or
01:37vacations--you can put a start date and an end date for your away message
01:41and type the message in here, and let people know what you're doing, and when
01:45you're going to be expected back, or who to contact in your absence.
01:48Once you've done these changes, you can click on Apply, and they will be applied
01:52to your Message Center account.
01:54Over here, you have links to your sent messages.
01:56So if you've sent out any messages, you can see them right here.
01:59You have your trash, which is if you've deleted a message,
02:02you put them into the trash right here. And you can also set up custom Folders.
02:06I have a few custom folders that I have created. You can add them or delete
02:09them here, rename them.
02:11The purpose of the folders is if you want to put messages into custom folders,
02:15you can go ahead and do that.
02:16If I want to rename a folder or create a new folder, I can do that here.
02:20When I click Save, I have renamed this folder, and I can also add a new folder--
02:24items that perhaps I've got saved messages.
02:27All right, so that you can use these folders to organize your messages.
02:30So if I go back to the inbox, and I want to put a message in a folder, all I
02:33have to do is select a couple of messages, or just one message, and I can move
02:38them to my Older Messages, or I can move them to my Saved Messages, and they
02:42will automatically go in there.
02:43You can see the count right here. It says there is five of them.
02:46Great and easy way to organize your messages.
02:48I do have a message I want to reply to, and I'm going to go ahead and take
02:51a look at that now.
02:52I want to click on this message about an item I've purchased, an eBay item,
02:56and here is the information about that item, and the date I purchased it. It is all there.
02:59And I get a nice message saying, "Your pin has been packed and shipped we
03:03delivered it to the Post Office this afternoon.
03:05Thank you again for your purchase."
03:07And that's from the user mr48now. I just purchased a pin from this particular user.
03:12And if I want to respond to the message, you may recall I said always use the
03:15Message Center to respond.
03:17And I'm going to do that I can click here to respond to this, or I could hit
03:20Reply, or I could delete.
03:22So I'm going to go ahead and hit Reply.
03:23And you'll see here in the interface that my signature has been added to the message.
03:28I've going to say, "Thank you so much.
03:31I noticed you left me positive feedback, and I'll be sure to do the same upon receipt!
03:41Have a great day!"
03:44So if I want to send a copy of this message to my regular e-mail that's
03:48associated with my eBay account, I select this box right here, and I can click Send.
03:53The message is then sent, and I'll be able to go back to My Messages, and I can
03:58see the message has been sent.
03:59I come back to Sent messages, and I'll see the message has been sent. It's right there.
04:03Check your messages frequently.
04:05You never know when someone might be contacting you.
04:07Many times on eBay simple challenges can be resolved by checking your eBay
04:11messages and corresponding with your sellers.
04:13When considering leaving anything other than a positive feedback for a seller,
04:17please be sure you've checked the message center to see if they have been
04:20trying to reach you.
04:21Normal e-mail boxes are often plagued with the items being misrouted to the
04:25spam folder and other possible reasons that you may not have received a message from your seller.
04:30If a seller sends you a message via eBay, however, it will definitely show
04:34up here.

8. Using the Feedback Forum
Leaving feedback
00:00Feedback is the heart of the eBay system, and giving feedback helps inform other
00:04members of the eBay community about the experience you had with your seller.
00:08The goal is to always give honest feedback whenever you make a purchase.
00:12However, I strongly encourage that you always work things out directly with
00:16your seller prior to leaving feedback that's adverse, or anything other than a positive feedback.
00:22Bear in mind that many sellers really depend upon the income they earn on eBay,
00:26and your rating directly affects their trading and their ability to sell
00:29merchandise to other buyers.
00:31Be sure you carefully consider the feedback you leave before you leave adverse feedback.
00:36Let me first explain to you few things about feedback. We'll go to the Help
00:39system, and we'll look at the Help Topic.
00:41You can learn more about feedback here.
00:43Going to the help system gives you a bunch of topics about feedback. You can
00:46click All about Feedback here and read about the feedback system.
00:50The basics are all explained, and I suggest you take a moment to review this
00:54section of the eBay help system.
00:56You can also go to the site map here at the bottom of the page,
00:59and on the right-hand side under Community, there is a whole section on feedback
01:03and links to different feedback forums
01:06and links to places where you can leave feedback or view other members'
01:09feedback or follow upon feedback you've left.
01:12I'm going to click on the Feedback Forum for a minute and just quickly review
01:16what feedback is on eBay.
01:18Feedback is an opportunity for you to leave a comment about your experience with
01:21the other eBay member.
01:22You can only leave feedback if you've had a transaction.
01:25Sellers can only leave positive feedback for buyers, but buyers can leave in
01:29either a positive, a negative or a neutral rating, along with a short comment.
01:34Buyers' and sellers' reputations are based on these feedback comments, so it's
01:38important they be accurate.
01:39These feedback comments make up a profile and helping prospective trading
01:44partners make decisions about buying and selling with each other.
01:47There is also a thing called Detailed Seller Rating which are anonymous, but it
01:51counts towards the overall feedback score of the seller.
01:54So we're going to talk about how to leave a feedback; that's the purpose of this movie.
01:57We'll go over to My eBay, and we'll take a look at items that we've won.
02:02You'll see in here that I have different items that I've purchased, and you can
02:06also see that this particular item I still haven't left feedback for, but I have
02:11receive feedback on it.
02:12I can click right here to leave feedback, and I'll be taken over to this section
02:17where I can leave feedback for this particular purchase.
02:20Now I would like to leave feedback for all the items I've purchased,
02:23so I'm going to click this link right here, All.
02:26Now I have received this item, which is the sterling pin I ordered on eBay, but
02:31this item I have not yet received.
02:32I prefer to wait until I actually receive my purchase before leaving a positive feedback.
02:37I'm going to go ahead and leave a positive feedback, and I'm going to leave a comment.
02:41I also have the opportunity to leave a Detailed Seller Rating.
02:44I'll explain what that is.
02:45"Great item, exactly as described! All stars!"
02:54Then in the detailed seller rating, the description was accurate,
02:57yes, I'm going to give very accurate, five stars.
03:01How satisfied were you with the seller's communication?
03:04I was very satisfied.
03:06How quickly did the seller ship the item? Very quickly.
03:09I got it right away.
03:10How reasonable were the shipping and handling charges?
03:13They were excellent.
03:14So I'm going to go ahead put five stars in all categories.
03:17Once you're done leaving all the feedback, you go ahead and click this button
03:21here, which says Leave the Feedback.
03:23The feedback has been left for the transaction.
03:26Now that we've left feedback for this transaction, we can take a look at the
03:29feedback we've left.
03:30So I am going to go over to My eBay, and I'm going to go down to items that I've
03:35won, and I'm going to pull it up on list here.
03:38I can see the item I have purchased. I also can now see, in context, the positive
03:42feedback has not only been received from the other member, but I've also left
03:46feedback for the other member.
03:48And if I click this number, this is the feedback score for mr48.
03:52Now I can scroll down and see the feedback that I left for them right here.
03:57That's really all there is to it.
03:58Other eBay users will use your feedback as a road map while they are
04:02shopping with this user.
04:04So always make sure to take the time to leave a feedback comment.
04:07If you're tempted to leave it an unfavorable feedback, first give the seller
04:11an opportunity to fix the issue you're having with them before you leave that
04:15feedback.

Following up on feedback
00:00Once you leave a feedback comment, something might come up, and you may want to
00:04follow up to the feedback.
00:05Perhaps you may want to leave a little extra comment applauding the seller for
00:09a great transaction.
00:10Maybe you posted the feedback too quickly, and maybe missed something you were typing.
00:14Perhaps the seller resolved an issue that you were having, and you'd like to
00:17acknowledge it on their profile.
00:19Luckily there is an easy and convenient way to do all of that.
00:23So if you want to follow up on a comment you've left, you can go down to the
00:26site map here at the bottom of the page, and you'll see, under Community,
00:30you'll see all these options for feedback.
00:33You can click on this link that says Follow Up to Feedback Left.
00:37You'll be taken to a list of the feedback that you've left for other eBay
00:41members. Whether you're buying or selling, you'll see a list of them here, and
00:44you'll see the transaction that you've left feedback for, and you can click on
00:48this link right here, the action button for following up on the feedback.
00:51Take a moment to read what eBay has presented here.
00:54It's important to remember that you can only follow up once to a comment; you
00:58cannot edit or retract that comment.
01:00It's always a good idea to leave factual and non-emotional feedback comments.
01:04You don't want to make any personal attacks. And leaving a comment here on
01:09the follow-up does not remove or change the original rating that you left the member.
01:13Also, if you're in a dispute, or you have some challenges with the other member
01:17or the seller that you're trading with, try to resolve it before leaving
01:20additional comments for them.
01:22I was really happy with this purchase, and I wanted to take the time to make an
01:26additional comment about my satisfaction.
01:28"I was really happy with this purchase, and wanted to say so!"
01:35Then you click this button, and you can leave the follow-up comment.
01:38Now I want to go ahead and take a look at what I just did.
01:41So you can see here the user's profile and their feedback scores here, and I am
01:45going to scroll down and take a look at it.
01:47You can see the follow-up feedback that you've left.
01:50You'll have this second chance to add additional comments to the feedback you've
01:53left for the member, in case you want to post something relevant that you may
01:56have missed the first time around.

Requesting a feedback revision
00:00Sometimes you will accidentally enter the wrong feedback, or new details may come
00:05to light which change your mind about a listing.
00:07Perhaps you left adverse feedback for your seller, and it was for some detail
00:10what they faithfully explained in the listing itself.
00:13Maybe an item was damaged during shipping, and you now realize that the shipping
00:17carrier was responsible, and not the seller.
00:20Whatever the reason may be, as a buyer, you cannot actually initiate a
00:23request for revision of feedback, but you can let your seller know how to start the process.
00:29So let's go through the process and see how that works.
00:31If you're the seller--which, of course, we're the buyer--but if are the seller,
00:34you would go to the eBay site map here at the bottom of the page, and you
00:37would go to the Community section under the Feedback subsection and click
00:41Request a Feedback Revision.
00:44That's something the seller will do, and you can direct them there if they
00:46don't know the process.
00:48Once they request a revision on a feedback, you'll receive an e-mail about it.
00:51So you'll see, if I flip over to my e-mail, I received this request for a feedback
00:56revision from the seller of the item.
00:58I had left them negative feedback, and they are asking for a revision because
01:02they said they've communicated with me, and they confirmed that I left a
01:06feedback by mistake.
01:08Now you hear me talk a lot about marketplace safety, and I'm not inclined to
01:11click links and e-mails because I think it's not really that safe, especially
01:15with fraudulent and fake e-mails out there.
01:18So what I'm going to do is I am going to go over to the eBay system.
01:20First, I want to double check the feedback I left for this particular seller;
01:24I am going to go to My eBay, and I am going to look at items that I've won.
01:28I am then going to scroll down to the listing that shows the item that I
01:32purchased, the one that had the feedback revision request, and I am going to
01:35click on the Feedback Profile for the seller. And I can see here that I've
01:38left them a feedback comment, Extremely poor customer service experience,
01:43e-mailed with no reply.
01:44But I've decided to change my feedback, and the seller and I have agreed to do that.
01:49So what will happen is if I want to revise the feedback based on the request
01:52from the seller, I'll go to My eBay again, and this time I'll go to the Messages
01:56section right here, and I will see the message that I received from the member,
02:01which is if I go to All Messages:
02:04The seller is requesting a feedback revision. And I am going to click on that message.
02:09I'll see here a message that I can then click on Accept or Decline the request.
02:14So I am going to go ahead and accept the request. I'm then taken to a page that
02:17says Revise seller's Feedback.
02:20You can revise the seller's feedback rating, comment, and detailed seller rating.
02:23So I am going to do that now.
02:25I am going to now leave a positive comment, and I am going to say, "Great seller,
02:29item just what was described."
02:35You'll notice that you can only revise the detailed seller rating that
02:38you originally posted.
02:39So I only posted a comment about the communication earlier, and I gave a bad rating.
02:44So I am going to go ahead and leave a very satisfied five stars, and I am going
02:48to click Revise Feedback.
02:50Well, what happen in the next screen is you'll see a confirmation page.
02:54This will show you the previous feedback that you left for the seller, along with
02:58the revised feedback that you're going to leave for the seller. Make sure you're
03:01leaving it correctly because this is your last chance to make the change.
03:06You cannot go back and change it again. This is it.
03:09So once you've definitely confirmed this is correct, go ahead and click on the
03:13Confirm option, and you'll see a note here, "Thank you for revising the feedback."
03:17Now I am going back to My eBay,
03:18I am going to look at the items that I've purchased, and I am going to
03:21review the feedback.
03:23I see the item here, and I see the feedback comments here.
03:25I am going to click on the feedback score for this particular seller, and you'll
03:29see that the new feedback has now been posted.
03:32You can only revise feedback once,
03:34so be sure that you have said exactly what you want to say here.
03:37Most sellers will send a feedback revision request promptly when you request it,
03:41and you can easily access all of your feedback tools through the feedback form
03:45menu of the site map, just like I showed you earlier.

9. Handling Problem Transactions
Understanding eBay Buyer Protection
00:00In order to help resolve customer service issues associated with purchasing from
00:04sellers on eBay, eBay has developed a program that allows users to take
00:08advantage of eBay's customer service support.
00:11If an item is not shipped or is not as described in the listing, eBay will open
00:16a case for you, which provides the seller an opportunity to make it right.
00:20eBay's buyer protection program allows users to buy with a higher sense
00:25of security on eBay.
00:27If you decide to purchase an item, be careful to review the details of the listing.
00:31Some things to note are the seller's feedback,
00:34the shipping and the payment methods, any terms of the sale, and most
00:38importantly, the item description.
00:40Sellers will often describe damage and other important details in the
00:44listing description.
00:45Make note of the date that you purchased and paid for the item, and be reasonable
00:49about the shipping date.
00:50Sometimes sellers are backed up with orders, and it may take a few days to ship
00:54the merchandise out.
00:55If you have to wait any longer than ten days, and it wasn't specifically noted
00:59in the listing, you should contact the seller before you leave feedback.
01:03You can ask questions about items using the Ask a Question button on the listing page.
01:08You get to that page by going to My eBay, you look at items that you have
01:12won, you pull up a listing, you go to the full description, and you view the order details.
01:20There will be a link right here to contact the seller.
01:24You can also request a seller's information, perhaps their e-mail address or
01:28phone number if you wish, which they may give you at their discretion.
01:32You also have the right to obtain their complete contact information using the
01:36Advanced search option on eBay, and I'll take you that right now.
01:40You go to Advanced search, you go over here on the left-hand side, and you click
01:44Find contact information.
01:45Then you enter the user ID and the eBay item number to obtain the contact phone
01:50number for that user.
01:52Make sure that your own profile information is up to date and accurate.
01:56You can edit your information in your account page.
01:59If your address has not been updated, or you forget to specify a different
02:03shipping address, it may cause delays in your order, and it may also incur
02:07further shipping costs for you to correct the problem.
02:10Be sure to check your spam filters in case the seller has been trying to contact
02:13you, but perhaps the message is being filtered into your spam folder.
02:17You can avoid this by going directly to the My eBay messaging system and
02:21reviewing all your messages there.
02:23If you cannot reach a seller, and you're having a problem with an order--such as
02:26late shipping, incorrect shipment, or an item not as described--then you can
02:31contact eBay customer support, and they will help you fix the problem.
02:35You can get help with eBay Resolution Center by clicking on the Help option and
02:39going to the Resolution Center.
02:41Here you'll have a chance to enter in whatever the nature of the problem or
02:44challenge you are having with the seller is.
02:46If you haven't received your item yet, you can click that option and click Continue.
02:51eBay may ask you some additional questions about the item.
02:54You can report that the item has not been received or was not as described, and
02:58eBay will give you a list of your most recent purchases, so you can select which
03:02item you'd like to create the dispute for.
03:04You need to follow the steps to open a case that are given to you by eBay, and try
03:08to solve the issue with the seller directly.
03:10eBay will step in after seven days and refund you the entire purchase price, plus shipping.
03:16Remember to always leave honest and objective feedback;
03:20sometimes a problem that could have been solved by a simple e-mail or phone call
03:24turns into an uglier affair just simply due to lack of communication.
03:28You should always try to resolve challenges directly with the seller, but if
03:31that doesn't work, eBay's buyer protection is there just to make sure you
03:35don't get ripped off.
03:37Thanks to eBay buyer protection, you can shop confidently knowing that your
03:40purchases are guaranteed.
03:42If you ever have a problem with your purchase and need help, eBay's staff is there
03:47to work with you and resolve the issue.
03:49The majority of your experiences on eBay will go without a hitch, thanks to
03:52eBay's protection policies.
03:54Most sellers are reliable, and the ones that are not soon get weeded out by the system.
03:59eBay's buyer protection is your assurance that the company will be there to help
04:03you when you need it most.

Resolving issues directly with the seller
00:00We're taking a lot of time to discuss the eBay marketplace and safe trading
00:04ideas and best practices.
00:06It's also important to be respectful and considerate to our eBay trading
00:10partners online, and that means giving sellers a chance to rectify challenges
00:14that may be the result of a family emergency, an honest error, a medical problem,
00:20or a myriad of other real-life situations which pop up and make it hard for
00:24people to do what they promised.
00:26Bear in mind that buyers can always file a protection case under eBay's Buyer
00:31Protection Policy within 45 days of payment, so you have plenty of time to work
00:36things out before you feel compelled to get eBay directly involved with your
00:40transaction challenges.
00:42When you have a good-faith dispute with your seller, then reach out to them by
00:45using the Ask a Question link on the original eBay listing page for the item in question.
00:50You may also contact your seller by telephone.
00:53If they don't publish a telephone number on the listing itself, then you can
00:57have eBay e-mail you the information if you completed a transaction with that seller.
01:02The contact information may be requested by going to the Advanced search option
01:06on eBay and clicking on the Find contact information link.
01:10Sometimes a seller's contact phone number may be out of date. Don't assume they are
01:14a scammer as a result of this. Many people's phone numbers change over time,
01:18and they may have simply forgotten to update their eBay profile.
01:22Contact eBay using the Contact Us option on the web site and inform eBay's
01:27customer support team that you need to get in touch with the seller.
01:31As a last resort, you can always use the Resolve a problem option on the eBay
01:35listing or on the My eBay page, under items you've won, to initiate a formal
01:40intervention through eBay.
01:42Resolving your challenges directly with the seller will usually achieve the best
01:46results for everyone involved.

Getting eBay's help
00:01As we discussed in earlier movies, when you're having a problem with an order
00:05or a seller, it's best to take care of it directly with them before you get eBay involved.
00:10But if all else fails, you can also contact eBay Customer Support about the
00:13challenges you're having with them.
00:15There are many different ways to address this, and let's walk through a few of
00:19the possibilities here in this particular movie.
00:22If you go to an item, you can go to My eBay, and you can look at items you've won.
00:26You can always see the list here. And if you're having a challenge with an order,
00:30you can go ahead and click under More actions, and you can contact the seller.
00:34That would be my first line of attack for resolving a challenge.
00:38If you haven't received the item, you might say, well, where is my item?
00:40So you click on the first choice, and you can go ahead and see the topics
00:44that eBay provides.
00:45You may need to pay for the item before it can be shipped to you.
00:47So in this case, I haven't paid for the item.
00:49Well, I wondered why I didn't get it.
00:51Well, it's because you haven't paid for it.
00:53So eBay is keeping track of that for me.
00:55You can also enter in other questions here, like you want to change your order.
00:58How do I cancel my purchase?
01:00Well, a purchase is binding, and generally when you make a purchase with the
01:03seller, you're obligated to complete that purchase.
01:06Maybe I've questions about returning an item or shipping questions.
01:09I can do all of these things here, and I can see the policy that this seller has
01:13about a specific Returns Policy, for example, or questions about shipping.
01:18The item ships from Palo Alto.
01:19So if I am all the way across from the other side of the country, maybe it takes
01:23a little bit of time to get there.
01:25If I bought an item, and I am out of the country, I can see that this seller
01:28doesn't ship internationally; that could also pose a situation where I might need
01:31to resolve an issue.
01:32So if I want to have eBay get involved in resolving a problem with a
01:36transaction, I can click on More actions and click Resolve a problem, and I can
01:41indicate that my item doesn't match the seller's description.
01:44I want to report that to eBay, and the first thing that eBay will do is ask if
01:48I've contacted the seller yet.
01:50If I've contacted the seller, I would click here and indicate the date that I
01:53paid for the order and then click Continue.
01:54Then I can open a case with eBay.
01:57eBay gives me some tutorials.
01:59I can learn more about the process of resolving a dispute with another member.
02:02I also can see the Returns Policy for the seller that says the seller is
02:07allowing a Returns Policy of seven days after I've received the item.
02:10So I can click on Open a case.
02:12I am then taken into eBay's Resolution Center, and I can resolve my dispute here.
02:17Here I can describe the challenge that I am having with the item, whether it's
02:20damaged, if it's the wrong item, it's counterfeit, or missing parts or pieces, or
02:24unusable for some reason.
02:25I am going to go ahead and indicate here that it's missing parts.
02:29I was told that not only does this beautiful dog dish come with a gift box,
02:33but it also comes with a free gift card.
02:35Well, I didn't get either of those items.
02:36Then I'm going to go ahead and scroll down and indicate how I contacted the seller.
02:40Well, I contacted them through the eBay Message system. Did they respond?
02:44No. Did the seller try to help you with your problem, or are you trying to work it
02:48out with the seller? No, they didn't.
02:50Then you can indicate what your communication was with the seller, and I'll say here None.
02:55They didn't reply.
02:57Please enter a phone number where we can get in touch with you.
03:00Can we share your number with the seller? Yes, of course.
03:03What resolution would you like?
03:05I still want the items I had ordered. There you go.
03:09Then I can go ahead and open a case.
03:11I've now opened the case on this particular transaction, and I can go to
03:14the Resolution Center.
03:16Not only can you see cases you've opened, but also all of the cases that have
03:19been resolved or closed on your account as well.
03:22You can see that we have one case opened, and here it is.
03:24You can either click here to view the item, or you can see the case details.
03:28I am going to click on See Case Details here.
03:30The seller has a chance to respond and get back to you about working things out,
03:35and you have the ability to manage your cases here.
03:37You can add additional messages, or you can close the case.
03:40Once a seller has responded and resolved the problem that you're having with
03:44them, you can close the case, and you can indicate you worked it out with the seller.
03:48If you want to add some additional comments, you can do that, and then you
03:50can click Submit Here.
03:52Are you sure you want to close the case?
03:53Please close this case only if you've finished all your transactions with the
03:57seller, and if your issue has been completely resolved.
04:00This case cannot be reopened after you close it, and I am going to click Yes. There you go.
04:05So getting in touch with eBay can also be helpful when you're having challenges
04:08with the seller on any aspect of an item you purchased. But first, chances are
04:12you're not going to have a problem or a challenge with the transaction.
04:15But you should reach out to the seller first before going through the eBay
04:18dispute and resolution process.
04:21It's good to know eBay is there for you to support you if you're not successful
04:24in resolving these challenges directly with the seller.

Retracting bids
00:00Okay, so you've bid on an item.
00:02But sometimes you change your mind, and you know, you've already placed a bid. Well, don't worry.
00:07As long as you're within the time restrictions in place on eBay, you can retract that bid.
00:12We'll look into how to do that here.
00:13But you know, I spent a lot of time looking for an easy way to retract or cancel
00:18my bid on an item, and you know, I couldn't really find anywhere on My eBay or
00:22anywhere near the Listing page where I could retract or cancel a bid.
00:26So here's the easy way to do it.
00:28It is easy, but you need to know how to do it. So go ahead and click on Help, go
00:32ahead and type in the keywords "cancel bid". Then click Search.
00:37eBay will ask you if you are the buyer or the seller, and I am the buyer.
00:42I entered the wrong bid amount.
00:43So I am going to the go ahead and click on this item, and I am going to go
00:46ahead and click Continue, but I could also enter in the eBay item number, if I wanted to, here.
00:51I'm then presented with a page that tells me I am allowed to cancel my bid
00:54because I'm within my rights to do that, and it explains why.
00:58Then I click on Retract Bid.
01:00I'm taken to another page which kind of discourages me from retracting my bid and
01:04explains the reasons why it's okay if I do so. But I'll pull down the reason,
01:08which is I entered the wrong amount, and I'll click Retract Bid.
01:11You can see that I have placed a bid retraction on the item.
01:15If you go to the Bid page, you'll see all the bids have been retracted here,
01:18and you can see on the page here that I've retracted my bid, and it explains the reason why.
01:23If the listing ends in more than 12 hours, you have the right to cancel your bid.
01:27If the listing ends in less than 12 hours, you may only retract a bid within an
01:32hour of placing it, and eBay will only remove the most recent bid you've placed.
01:36Retracting your bid is useful if you accidentally bid the wrong price or the
01:40item description has substantially changed after you placed your bid.
01:44Keep the time conditions in mind when placing a bid, and be aware of whether or
01:48not you'll be able to cancel your bid when you're doing so.

Canceling a best offer
00:01A lot of sellers depend on their eBay income, but sometimes buyers do change their mind.
00:06If you make an offer on a listing and for some reason you no longer want the
00:10item because you've changed your mind, or you've entered the wrong offer amount,
00:13you can retract your offer.
00:15Canceling your offer isn't really hard, but eBay has made it a little hard to
00:19find the form to enter your cancellation.
00:22This may be something that eBay does on purpose, because it's not in the
00:25best interest of sellers for buyers to be routinely removing their offers after making them.
00:30I think eBay expects that people are serious when they place offers on items,
00:34and they want you to be equally serious about having to figure out how to remove
00:38your offer when you make a mistake placing it.
00:40So let's talk about how this works.
00:42First of all, you can find out about items that you've bid on or offers you've
00:46made by going to My eBay under Bids/Offers.
00:49Here you'll see a section that shows that you've got offers, and any pending best
00:54offers that you have,
00:55you can find using this filter right here.
00:57These are the offers that are still pending.
00:58I have an offer on this postcard, and I am going to take a look at it.
01:01It says, "Your offer of $1 has been sent to the seller. Good luck!"
01:05Well, I'd like to show you that there is really no place on the eBay listing to
01:08retract your offers.
01:09So what I am going to do is I am going to go ahead, and I am going to copy this
01:12eBay listing ID number, and I am going to go to the Help system.
01:16I am going to click on Help, go to Help Topics, and I am going to click here
01:19under Bidding & buying, and then All about bidding.
01:23Then the first comment you'll see here under top questions is, Can I retract or cancel my bid?
01:28If you scroll down here in the fine print, you'll see right here, If you want
01:33to retract a bid, you can retract a Best Offer using the best offer Cancellation form.
01:38Wow! That was kind of a challenge to find, but you know what?
01:42You had this wonderful movie to show you exactly where to find it.
01:46I am going to go ahead and paste the eBay ID number--
01:49this is the eBay item number-- and then I am going to click Continue.
01:52I have to give a reason,
01:53so I am going to go ahead and indicate that the reason I am going to cancel my
01:57bid, or my best offer in this case, is that I entered the wrong amount.
02:00Then I click Cancel Offer.
02:02Then my offer has been canceled.
02:06Best offers are binding, and canceling them will count towards your maximum
02:10available offers on that listing.
02:13In some categories, you may be restricted from making another best offer on the
02:17item, depending on the category.
02:19You may retract an offer in a few circumstances, and the reasons you're
02:23permitted to do that is if you entered the wrong dollar amount, the description
02:27of the item has changed, or for some reason you're trying to reach the seller by
02:31e-mail or by phone and you can't get a hold of them.
02:34Once you submit your cancellation form, eBay will remove your best offer
02:38permanently. And if the seller has already accepted your offer, you need to
02:41remember that you cannot retract or cancel it at that time.
02:43You would then have to turn around and use eBay's Resolution Center to ask the seller
02:47if they would be willing to cancel a successful purchase transaction, because a
02:52deal has already been accepted.
02:54If you've already paid, you'll need to resolve that issue directly with your
02:57seller and abide by the original terms and conditions of the listing.
03:01A little footnote is--and I really want to give this to you as personal advice--
03:05if you make a mistake, and you have a change of heart, it's important not to use
03:09the feedback forum as a weapon to get back at the seller for a mistake that you
03:13yourself have made that's beyond the control of the seller.
03:16A seller is perfectly within their right to enforce an order and transaction
03:20agreement with you and expect that you'll abide by the terms and conditions of
03:24the order and complete the sale.

10. Avoiding Scams and Phishing
Tips for safe trading
00:00eBay is a robust marketplace filled with fascinating and useful products and services.
00:06You'll find great deals, and it's generally a very reliable place to trade with other people.
00:12eBay has taken many steps to ensure a safe trading environment by providing you
00:16with a way to learn about your trading partners with feedback but also a buyer
00:21protection policy that will refund your money if something goes wrong.
00:24I would like to review some tips with you for safe trading on eBay and internet
00:29commerce sites in general, so that we are reinforcing the positive measures you
00:33can take to ensure a flawless trading experience with your online partners.
00:38Your key learning opportunity about your seller's reliability is their feedback
00:42profile and the comments left by others.
00:45These comments give you an instant clue about making smart buying decisions.
00:49A careful review of the item's description will ensure that there's no buyer's
00:53remorse or surprises when you receive the package.
00:57Look at the details of the listing, the shipping cost, the payment methods and
01:01their returns policy.
01:02Ensure that you're getting not only what you want but nothing less than what
01:06you'd expect within the item description.
01:09Ask the seller a question if you still aren't sure and use the link on the
01:13eBay listing to do so.
01:15If you have a bid with the seller already then you're entitled to obtain their
01:19contact phone number from eBay to reach out to them by phone.
01:22Pay safely with a secure method of payment that protects you.
01:26PayPal is both fast and secure and ensures you are protected against fraud.
01:31Use of a credit card is okay as long as your credit card company extends
01:34fraud protections to you.
01:36Never use instant money transfer services such as Money Gram or Western Union
01:41because that's a guaranteed way to get ripped off fast.
01:45Safe trading is important to everybody, and the payment method you use is just
01:49as important as being knowledgeable about online tips and best practices, both on
01:55eBay and on any web site.

Phishing (PayPal and eBay)
00:00The term phishing refers to criminally fraudulent methods of trying to steal
00:04personal information from someone online.
00:07Information such as a username and password or credit card info or similarly
00:12important personal or financial data are stolen when the fraudster pretends to
00:17be a legitimate and trustworthy company or person.
00:21I would like to introduce you to the concept if you haven't already heard of
00:24it and emphasize the importance of maintaining a watchful eye on your personal data.
00:29This is important not only on eBay but whenever you are online.
00:34You may be contacted by e-mail or instant message asking you to click on a link
00:37to update your personal information or enter a credit card number to allegedly
00:42fix some issue with your eBay or PayPal account.
00:45These exploits are out there and if you're paying attention, you won't be duped.
00:50Fraudsters target you randomly and will send e-mails that appear to be
00:54legitimate but are actually not.
00:55They are often using link manipulation to spoof a legitimate web site and
01:00encourage you to visit a fraudulent site to capture your personal information.
01:05My advice to you is that you should never click a link within an e-mail and then
01:09enter some personal or sensitive information into that web page that pops up.
01:14Always type the URL directly into the web site and then enter your username and
01:18password there rather than clicking on a link in an e-mail.
01:23Fraudsters are very clever, and they can make an e-mail look exactly like
01:26a legitimate company.
01:28You know some of the latest Internet browsers will also notify you whenever a
01:32site that you visit is suspected of being a phishing site.
01:36As of the date of this recording, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Opera and
01:42Google Chrome, all have some form of anti-phishing technology available.
01:47Take some time to look into your Internet browser's security features.
01:52Knowledge and education is your primary defense against phishing attacks and by
01:56being familiar with the signs of the scammers, you'll avoid them altogether.
02:01When in doubt, you may always send a copy of any suspicious e-mails you received
02:05to spoof@ebay.com or spoof@paypal.com, and you will receive an automated reply
02:12back right away letting you know if the e-mail is real or a fraudster.
02:17I'm working really hard to condition your mind to be trusting of Internet
02:20web sites and e-commerce, but I'm also giving you some ammunition to ensure
02:24that you're trained and ready for anything that might come up, including Internet scammers.
02:29With this knowledge, you can be confident of when to be on guard and what to be
02:33looking for when trading on eBay.

Identifying prohibited items
00:00Brand-name items that bear a company logo may be sold on eBay as long as they
00:04were made or officially endorsed by that brand company.
00:08eBay does not permit any sellers to list an item knowingly that is fake,
00:13replica, or counterfeit.
00:15Bootleg movies, pirated software, counterfeit watches or fake handbags are all
00:21illegal and not allowed on eBay.
00:24eBay specifically mentions on their site that they do not allow the sale of
00:28backup or archival copies of software,
00:31bootleg recordings of concerts or live shows, or fakes, replicas,
00:36counterfeits of things like handbags, scarves, sunglasses, wallets, watches
00:42or other accessories, counterfeit electronics, counterfeit replacement parts
00:46such as items that are labeled with a brand name that were not actually made by that company,
00:52fake autographs, copies of CDs or DVDs, scans for magazines or books, pirated
00:58software, pirated photos, TV programs, videogames, and anything that is
01:03obviously not coming from the original owner of the copyright or intellectual
01:08property rights holder.
01:10Some buyers knowingly purchase bootleg or counterfeit items in hopes of
01:13acquiring something like the latest movie, video game, or luxury brand product at
01:18a substantial discount.
01:20This hurts the entire eBay marketplace and you should always report any seller
01:25if you determine that an item that they are offering is a fake or if you receive
01:29an item that you know to be a fake or counterfeit.
01:32This is rare, but it can happen and you should take action on it immediately.
01:36There are also resources from the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov where you
01:42can learn more about the subject and report a violator.
01:45Entrepreneurial spirit is driven by the pride of ownership and companies
01:50deserve the full protection offered by the eBay marketplace as well as your
01:54watchful eye and good conscience to make sure that only genuine goods trade
01:59hands on the eBay online marketplace.

Account takeovers
00:00In the extremely unlikely event that you shared some confidential information
00:04through a spoof or fake web site, or you believe someone is trying to gain
00:08access to your eBay or PayPal account you are going to want to act quickly to
00:11mitigate any potential damage.
00:14Let's see how this might play out.
00:16We'll just pretend that we need some help with securing our eBay account.
00:20So I go to sign in. I go type in my User Name and my Password and when I try to
00:26sign in I see that my username and my password aren't getting me in.
00:29Maybe password has changed or someone's tried to hack my account or
00:33something has happened.
00:34I'm a little concerned.
00:36So what I am going to do is I am going to contact eBay immediately and make sure
00:39I secure my account.
00:40I am going to go back to the eBay homepage, click on Help, and there's this
00:44little Automated Agent over here. Watch what I do.
00:47Now, I like dealing with real live people, but I am going to give Emma, the
00:51automated computer, a chance to help me.
00:54I think my account has been hacked.
00:59So we'll see what she says.
01:02If you shared confidential information through spoof or a fake web site...
01:05Okay, well, she's telling me that I need to first secure my account.
01:08Okay, I am going to go ahead and click this link.
01:10And the first thing it's says is Secure Your Account.
01:13Okay, I will click that.
01:14If you can't sign in, contact us immediately.
01:18What to do if I, oh, I see.
01:19There are some subjects here.
01:21Call us between the hours of 5 a.m. and 10 p.m. 7 days a week. Wow!
01:26And eBay provides a telephone number I can call to get assistance.
01:29So it's important first before you panic to check with your family or anyone who
01:34might occasionally use your account and make sure that they aren't the person
01:37who accessed your account or possibly changed the password.
01:40If you try to sign into your account and if access has been denied, immediately
01:44contact eBay or PayPal support and a professional staff member will sort things
01:49out for you, secure your account, and help you get back on track immediately.
01:53They may put your account on hold just for a short time while they help
01:57secure your account again.
01:58Although it can sound a bit scary, eBay and PayPal both have lots of knowledge
02:02and experience in handling account takeover situations.
02:05And they'll be sure to get you back into your account with as little
02:09inconvenience as they can.

Fake Second Chance Offers
00:00We haven't talked a whole lot about Second Chance Offers in our course, and
00:03that's because they're pretty uncommon, depending on the category of
00:06merchandise you bid on.
00:07A Second Chance Offer is a way for a seller to extend to you a formal offer to
00:12purchase an item that you bid on previously, but you may have been outbid and
00:16they might've had multiples of that particular item.
00:19So let's learn a little bit more about Second Chance Offers so you can spot the
00:22fake ones and avoid them.
00:24Let's go to Help > Help Topics and we'll type in second chance, and we'll see
00:31here Receiving and excepting a Second Chance Offer, and then we can read up on
00:35Second Chance Offers.
00:36You can receive Second Chance Offers from a seller if they have duplicate items
00:39and want to offer them to you, if the winning bidder fails to complete the
00:43transaction and they want to offer it to you at your bid price, or if the
00:47reserve price is not met in a reserve price auction and they'd like to offer it
00:51to you at your bid price.
00:52You can determine if a Second Chance Offer is legitimate by going to the Message
00:57Center on My eBay. So if you go to the My eBay section and you look at Messages,
01:01you see the message comes in here.
01:03A Second Chance Offer, a real one, will come into My Messages on eBay.
01:08You'll also see offers listed here under the Buy section of your My eBay
01:11account and anytime you receive a Second Chance Offer it will show up in
01:14this tab right here.
01:15Now let's talk a little bit about protecting yourself.
01:18That's really important and I want to make sure that you're
01:21protecting yourself.
01:22You hear me talk a lot about avoiding clicking links in e-mails and that's
01:26something I speak of quite often.
01:28I recommend going directly to eBay to look at your offers because fraudsters
01:31learned that many trusting individuals would respond of phony e-mails offering
01:36Second Chance Offers and then trying to direct them to send money off eBay
01:40through an instant money transfer service, cash, or some other means.
01:44To protect yourself from fake Second Chance Offers, you would simply forward the
01:48entire e-mail to spoof@ebay.com. You'll receive an automated reply from eBay
01:54telling you if the message is genuine or if it's fake.
01:57That's a very, very easy and a quick way to do it.
02:00Since most people are trusting, and you probably are too, I feel it's important
02:04that you keep in the back of your mind my ongoing suggestion that you stay away
02:07from clicking links in e-mails, but rather you work directly on the eBay site
02:11for all of your eBay activities, and that includes reviewing and considering
02:15Second Chance Offers.

Dangers of Off-eBay Trading
00:00eBay was founded on the premise that people are basically good.
00:03We do realize, however, that not all people are good and that some people are
00:07out there to try and separate you from your hard earned dollar in a bad way.
00:11We want to make sure that you're educated, not scared, but empowered with the
00:15knowledge to combat fraud and protect yourself.
00:18There are inherent dangers of doing business off of eBay.
00:21When I say off eBay I mean transactions not completed on the actual eBay web site.
00:26The eBay Buyer Protection Policy was created to ensure that you would have a
00:30safe and wonderful eBay trading experience.
00:33If you buy off eBay because you're trying to circumvent the auction bidding or
00:37to get a better deal by cutting out eBay and dealing directly with the seller
00:41you may benefit in most situations, but that's a ticking time bomb waiting to go off.
00:45Without the protections of eBay and PayPal you may become the victim of a seller
00:49who does not ship the goods after payment or sends you inferior merchandise.
00:53If you're buying or paying for a deal you didn't get on the eBay web site,
00:57be sure you pay with a method of payment that protects you.
00:59Sending wires, instant transfers, or cash in the mail are surefire ways to get ripped off.
01:05Use PayPal or a credit or debit card with Fraud Protection that will allow you
01:09to get your money back if the item is not delivered or not as described.
01:14I'd like to encourage you to complete all your transactions directly on
01:17eBay, but if you do not do that at least protect yourself and know the risks
01:22of off eBay trading.

Conclusion
Goodbye
00:00I am so pleased that you've joined me in this journey to learn the ins and
00:03outs of buying on eBay.
00:05Earlier in this training, I bought a Native American sterling pin on eBay and
00:09I wanted to share my actual buying experience with you and show you the item I've purchased.
00:15I think it's important to mention that this was an actual eBay purchase, and I
00:18wanted to talk about my experience.
00:21The package arrived the very next day because the seller shipped the pin the
00:24same day I bought it.
00:25As you can see, it arrived in a very nicely padded envelope with a professional
00:29mailing label that was printed from eBay's web site.
00:39You can see here that the seller included a copy of the eBay listing page,
00:43I presume to help me match it up to my records, and you can see that this very
00:47nice little bonus silk purse was used to protect the item even further.
00:52Since the eBay listing didn't mention this purse it was a pleasant free surprise.
00:56Wow! Now that's great.
01:04The pin is even more fantastic than I would've imagined.
01:07Now that's really a superior eBay trading experience.
01:11You know, I hope that you'll leap into this fascinating and money-saving eBay
01:14marketplace with enthusiasm and the positive knowledge of knowing that you're
01:18now educated with tips and tricks and armed with best practices.
01:23Please join millions of others online and enjoy this path to savings,
01:28discovery, and endless hours of joyful shopping experiences on this really cool
01:33web site called eBay.
01:34Thank you for joining me and have an excellent day.
