If you run into any problems while following the exercises in this book that aren't
covered here, there are a few other places you can turn for help. Please note that
lynda.com cannot help troubleshoot technical problems with Adobe Acrobat 5.
Adobe staff will be able to help you with such typical problems as these: the trial
version has expired on your computer; the application crashes when you try and launch
it; and so forth.
I can't find the toolbar you're referring to and/or my toolbar is in a different
location than the one in the screenshot.
In Acrobat 5, the location of tools in the toolbar can be customized to suit your
needs. Because toolbars can be dragged around to tailor the appearance of the Acrobat
interface, the toolbars on your screen may not appear in the same locations as shown
in the book. If you can't find a tool, or if you've accidentally closed a toolbar,
choose Window > Toolbars and select the toolbar that you're looking for.
I can't find the Bookmarks/Thumbnails/etc. tab in the Navigation pane.
All of the items usually found in the Navigation pane are listed under the Window
menu. If you can't find a particular pane, you can easily get it back by selecting
it under the Window menu. In most cases, the pane will appear as a floating palette,
that you can simply drag back into the Navigation pane to redock.
Acrobat's not letting me choose whether I want to open Web pages in my Web browser
or in Acrobat. What gives?
The Specify Weblink Behavior dialog box contains an option to not show the dialog
box again once a selection has been made. Do not ask again is selected by default.
If you want to make this dialog box reappear, choose Edit > Preferences >
Web Capture (Mac OS X: Acrobat > Preferences > Web Capture) and click the
Reset Warning Dialogs to Default button.
The New Bookmark button is missing from the Navigation pane.
If you can't find the New Bookmark button, your Navigation pane is most likely too
narrow.
Widen the pane by dragging its border to the right. The button will appear.
I wanted to delete a form field radio button, but they all disappeared when I hit
the Delete key.
Whenever you attempt to delete a form field that shares its name with other fields,
Acrobat will ask whether you want to delete just the field you selected or all of
the fields with the same name. Make sure you click No if you only want to delete
the selected field. Click Yes to remove all fields with that name.
My form fields aren't calculating correctly.
Acrobat performs form field calculations based on the order in which the calculation
fields were created. To check the calculation order, have the Form tool selected
and choose Tools > Forms > Set Field Calculation Order.
The Layout Grid isn't fitting my needs for sizing form fields.
Often the Layout Grid won't match the dimensions of the form fields you're trying
to draw. You can adjust the Layout Grid settings by choosing Edit > Preferences
> General (Mac OS X: Acrobat > Preferences > General). Select the Layout
Grid category from the list on the left, and adjust the settings from there.
I included a movie in my PDF, but when I sent it to my client, the movie wasn't
there.
Movie files are not embedded into PDF documents. When you use the Movie tool to
place a movie file in your PDF, you must include the movie when you send the PDF
file. The movie file must also remain in the same relative relationship with the
PDF;, i.e., don't place the movie into a subfolder after referencing it in the PDF.
I'm viewing a PDF in Full Screen mode, but I disabled the ESC key as the key for
exiting Full Screen mode. How to I get back to the Acrobat interface?
To return to the Acrobat interface from Full Screen mode, press CTRL+L (Windows),
or COMMAND+L (Mac).
I created a Watched Folder in Distiller, but when I drag files into the folder,
nothing happens.
Distiller must be running in order to monitor a Watched Folder. Also, make sure
that you're dragging your PostScript files into the folder called In inside the
Watched Folder.
I'm trying to rotate my document with the Rotate View button, but each time I open
the document, it switches back to its original orientation.
First, make sure that your monitor isn't lying on its side.
To rotate a page or pages of your PDF, you must use choose Document > Rotate
Pages. Clicking the Rotate View button does indeed rotate the view of the entire
document, but it doesn't tell the PDF to open this way every time.
