Paul Trani discusses the important elements of a portfolio web site

Creating a Portfolio Web Site Using Flash CS4 Professional by Paul Trani is a new course in the Library this week. I asked Paul a few questions about this highly anticipated course, starting with why he thought a portfolio web site in Flash is important.

“Creating a website in Flash is a great start for people,” Paul told me, “and the reason I recorded a course on that topic. After Creating a First Web Site in Flash was published, I got a lot of feedback from people who wanted to take it to the next level, by putting their portfolio online. Nobody carries their portfolio around anymore. The ideal situation is to just give someone your url on a business card.”

“This title is unique,” Paul explained, “It’s broken down so that you could watch chapters 1-5 and have a web-based portfolio that is completely static and easy to update. After chapter 5, the course material gets more robust, and by the time you watch the whole thing, you have a really dynamic portfolio. Some Flash experience would be good when starting this course, but I think that the first few chapters are the building blocks that make this course really accessible for everyone.”

Paul, went on to explain that the most common mistake that people make when creating their portfolio web sites is making their portfolio hard to update. A portfolio web site that’s out of date is probably not going to get a person their dream job, so it’s crucial to maintain its content with current material.

Paul has a free eSeminar coming up on February 24th on how to create interactive experiences. He will also be speaking in the upcoming 10 city Adobe Flash Seminar put on by Mogo-Media.
