Monday Productivity Pointers: Making calls with Skype

Skype is the popular and free voice, video, and chat application that lets you keep in touch with family, friends, and customers no matter where you are. You can use Skype on your laptop, desktop computer, tablet, or mobile phone. Skype doesn’t use your telephone provider’s connection. It uses your Internet connection instead, so all you need is a computer with an active connection to the Internet.

This week on Monday Productivity Pointers, I start from the beginning and add a contact, test my equipment, and then initiate an Internet call with my contact.

Skype can do much more than simple headphone and microphone chatting. In the first video, we took a tour of all the ways you can use Skype to help you work and collaborate while you are on an active call. You can send files while voice chatting, and even type instant messages in the same window. Once the voice call is over, the connection history is there with your contact, and you can still chat and send files even if you don’t have an active call in progress.

You can even send a chat while your contact is offline. Once the contact comes online, he or she will see that there’s a message from you.

In the second video, I add a webcam and make a Skype call with video. I also demonstrate how to add more people while on a call, and set your notification preferences for that chat.

I have some perpetual chats going with multiple people in each chat. In some cases, the chats have gone on for years. I pop in when I can and join the conversation, and I have Skype set to notify me when anyone types the word “Jess.” This way I don’t feel like I have to read every line that comes in to the chat, I don’t get distracted by notifications coming in whenever anyone types something new, and I can concentrate fully on the task at hand.
