In a recent Monday Productivity Pointers, we explored how to auto-populate text, graphics, and other items into your Office documents. This week, I’ll show how you can bring the same level of productivity to your entire operating system using something called text expansion. Also referred to as word expanders or keyboard macros, text expansion utilities can save you extra keystrokes, and having to repetitively type the same things over and over.
We’ll first explore a handy utility app called TextExpander for Mac, in which you can type a key combination anywhere, anytime on your computer and have text appear where your cursor is. You can quickly add an address or other contact information, open URLs, even create a form letter. Text expansion is an incredibly handy way to automate repetitive typing or cut-and-pasting of words and graphics in your day-to-day workflow.
